KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
This was another wonderful week at NES! All grade levels are in the swing of things with routines becoming familiar. We loved getting to see Centennial Knights from the football, cheer, volleyball, and softball teams welcoming our Explorers during arrival this morning! They brought good vibes and high fives to start the day!
A few carpool reminders for those who participate in carpool in the morning, afternoon, or both. We have had many cars zoom onto campus at speeds that make me nervous. Please do not race through the parking lot or driveway to the drop-off area; both are slow zones. Earlier this week, we had a close call with a staff member who was walking out to carpool duty, and we’ve had to wave down cars that have been coming into the flagpole area too fast. I want to ensure the safety of both staff and students and need your help moving through campus slowly. For afternoon carpool, please have the carpool tag on the rearview mirror visible to our staff who collect the numbers.
I also wanted to let everyone know that over the summer and already this school year, we have had the Roswell Fire and Police Departments, as well as rescue and ambulance teams, onsite to assist injured people on the bike trails behind campus. Sometimes they come on campus with lights and sirens; sometimes they use a quiet approach. Depending on where the injured person is, they use their access to the trail through the park path we share with the City of Roswell (the Big Playground). I mention this because I know it can be concerning to see them on campus. If this happens while our students are on the playground, all staff have a process to keep the children away from the emergency response. I will communicate via a school messenger when emergency vehicles on campus are related to Northwood specifically or when their response to the trails may impact our dismissal practices or timing.
There may also be times when an ambulance and/or a fire truck is on campus for a singular medical need, and in those instances, and in the interest of privacy, a full campus email will not be sent unless we foresee an impact to dismissal processes or timing.
Today is the last official attendance ‘count’ day for Fulton County's SEAT process. Our current enrollment aligns with our forecast projections. I predict that our number of homeroom sections will stay the same, but official and final decisions will be sent from FCS in the coming days.
Stay cool this weekend!
With gratitude,
Heather Q. Rucker, principal
KINDERGARTEN EXPLORERS
Our kindergarten students have been learning and practicing our PBIS expectations in different areas throughout the school. They have been working hard to earn points that can be used at the PBIS Store at the end of the month. Last week, students enjoyed a special "window shopping" opportunity to explore the store and see the items they might like to purchase. The excitement is building as they look forward to their upcoming shopping day!
FIRST GRADE EXPLORERS
Our first graders had a fabulous first week! One of the perks of first grade is that students can check out two books at a time this year. Last year, they could only check out one. Students may go to the media center every morning (except Wednesdays) so please make sure your student brings books back each week and returns for new ones.
GET INVOLVED: NORTHWOOD CLUB APPLICATIONS
Northwood is excited to offer Explorers several morning and afternoon clubs for their enrichment and enjoyment.
Participants are expected to adhere to Northwood PBIS behavior expectations both during the school day and during club activities. We want your child's participation in school clubs to be a great experience of learning and interaction with other students. Our three Northwood expectations “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Engaged” will continue to be taught during all club activities. Club advisors will use Northwood’s Reflect and Refocus forms to teach positive behavior and “stop and think” strategies. Club participation is dependent on students following these PBIS procedures.
Below is the Northwood Club Schedule and applications with more details about deadlines and start dates.
AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK
Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.
As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Next week's AVID goal is: to greet someone when they say hello or talk with me.
NORTHWOOD STUDENT & FAMILY HANDBOOK
The Northwood Student & Family Handbook is filled with important information about school policies and procedures to help our school run smoothly and safely. We suggest that parents and students review the handbook together. If you have questions after reading, please call the school office.
We believe that a collaborative partnership between parents, community members, and business partners is a must for student success. Educating your child is a partnership—together we SHINE!

DISMISSAL CHANGES? MAKE THEM IN PICKUP PATROL
Northwood has partnered with PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol provides families with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans and helps ensure that students are accurately and safely dismissed each day.
If you need to change how your child should be dismissed, you should submit that information via PickUp Patrol before 1:30 pm on the day of the change, and our staff will be notified. We no longer accept dismissal requests via email or paper notes. Please do not email teachers directly.
All dismissal information and changes must be entered into PickUp Patrol.
If you have any questions, please first check the PickUp Patrol Parent Guide. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Robertson at Northwood’s front desk, robertsonl1@fultonschools.org.

CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND
Did you know? Our school community has a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account will be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Mrs. Rosa Gutierrez, our cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Mrs. Gutierrez, gutierrezabr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.
