Capturing Kids Hearts Capturing Kids Hearts

Dear Families,

We are excited to partner with you this school year as we implement Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH). This is an initiative focused on building positive relationships, emotional safety, and self-managing classrooms.

Our core philosophy is simple: "If you have a child’s heart, you have a child’s mind." When students feel safe, valued, and connected, they are better equipped to learn, grow, and treat others with respect.

What You May Hear Your Child Talking About at Home:

  • "Good Things": We start our class periods by sharing positive moments. This builds community, empathy, and a strong sense of family among students.

  • The Social Contract: Rather than a traditional list of teacher-imposed rules, our students work together to create a Social Contract. They agree on how they want to treat each other, how they want to be treated by the teacher, and how to handle conflict when it arises.

  • The 4 Questions: When a student struggles with behavior or makes a poor choice, teachers use four guiding questions to help them reflect and take ownership of their actions:

    1. What are you doing?

    2. What are you supposed to be doing?

    3. Are you doing it?

    4. What are you going to do about it?

  • Affirmations & Encouragement: Students and staff regularly share compliments and "put-ups" to uplift one another and reinforce a positive environment.

How You Can Support Us at Home:

  • Ask your child: "What was a 'Good Thing' shared in your class today?"

  • Discuss the Social Contract concept—talk about how you can practice respect, listening, and responsibility in your own household.

  • Reach out anytime if you have questions about how we are supporting your child's social-emotional and academic journey.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support!

Warmly,

MR. Watson

There’s no requirement to attend every meeting or volunteer for everything. Any amount of time or help you can give makes a difference!

General Information about Lice General Information about Lice

Dear Families,

We are sending this letter to all parents to raise awareness about head lice so you can take steps at home to help prevent your child from becoming infested. Any time children come together, particularly at the start of the school year or after social groupings like Girl/Cub Scouts, Brownies, Little League, dance groups, or sleepovers, Halloween costume sharing, head lice cases are commonly detected.

Recent studies show that head lice are seldom spread in the school setting. Direct, physical, head-to-head contact is the usual method of transmission. Lice do not jump or fly. They survive only briefly away from the human head and have difficulty crawling or clinging to smooth surfaces.

Check your child’s head weekly for lice and/or nits (eggs). Mature lice, which are no bigger than a sesame seed, avoid light and are hard to see. Lice eggs or “nits” are usually found close to the scalp, usually within one-quarter inch. They appear as tiny whitish ovals that are “glued” to the hair shaft. They cannot easily be flicked away, as dandruff can.

Head lice do not transmit disease and are not a serious medical condition. They cannot survive on your pets. If you find head lice on your child, please notify the school and treat them with lice shampoo following the package instructions. A second treatment may be required in seven to ten days. Continue to examine the child and all family members for three weeks and treat only if live lice or if nits are found one quarter inch or less from the scalp.

Check Regularly – Treat Quickly

Help Keep Head Lice Off Your Child

  • Check your child’s head weekly for signs of head lice.

  • Teach your child not to share or trade personal items such as hats, combs, brushes, headbands, and barrettes.

  • Contain long hair in braids or ponytails, especially in younger children.

  • Teach children to avoid head-to-head contact.

For more information regarding head lice or its treatment, please feel free to contact your local health department. Also, please click on the links below for information regarding lice:

  • WWCS Communicable Disease Response & Management.pdf (Page 4 for information about lice)

  • MI_HL_Manual_Final_2013.pdf(Page 4 in the manual presents lice myths and facts.)

Mr. Watson

IMPORTANT: We are a Nut Restrictive and Fish/Shellfish Restrictive School IMPORTANT: We are a Nut Restrictive and Fish/Shellfish Restrictive School

Nut Restrictive

  • We are a “NUT RESTRICTIVE” school. You are not permitted to bring any nut products to school or buses. We will always support the safety of our Roadrunners. As a result of a Roadrunner having a serious nut allergy condition, we are now officially a NUT RESTRICTIVE school. Any exposure to peanuts or nuts through contact or ingestion can cause a severe life threatening reaction. If your child has eaten peanuts, peanut butter, or nuts prior to coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands have been thoroughly washed prior to entering the school. It is important that no nuts or food items that contain nuts are brought into our school or buses. Thank you for your assistance in providing our students with a safe learning environment. • Breakfast and lunch is free for all students: Menu-https://www.wwcsd.net/schools/elementary-schools/roosevelt/lunch-menus/

Fish and Shellfish Restrictive

  • We are a fish and shellfish restrictive school. No fish or shellfish products are permitted at school or on buses. We will always support the safety of our Roadrunners. As a result of a couple Roadrunners having serious fish and shellfish allergies, we are officially a fish and shellfish restrictive school. Do not bring fish and shellfish products to school such as tuna fish and sushi.

Thank you for your support.

Birthday and Holiday Snacks Birthday and Holiday Snacks

Birthdays and holidays are very important. We understand and respect that parents want to send things to classrooms to celebrate birthdays. We encourage families to send fun pencils, books, fun markers, stickers...etc. In the spirit of safety, do not send food items such as cupcakes and cookies to celebrate birthdays. We have students/staff with life threatening nut allergies. We are a NUT RESTRICTIVE school. Thank you for supporting safety.

Safety Drills Safety Drills

We are committed to keeping our families informed about essential emergency preparedness procedures to ensure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. This includes guidance on what actions to take (and what to avoid), the timeline to expect during a lockdown, and an overview of the safety drills conducted across our schools each year.

The District Crisis Team has developed these important documents and they are posted on our district website. We encourage all families to review this information to be fully prepared and informed.

Please take a few moments to go over these materials, so we can work together to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Important-Talk With Your Child About Threats Important-Talk With Your Child About Threats

This link Prosecutor Worthy School Threat Letter 2025 (English).pdf is an important letter from Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy reminding families that any student who makes a threat of violence toward their school or district - whether intended as a prank or not - may face serious legal consequences. Under Michigan law, it is a crime to make a threat against a school or district, even if the person had no intent or capability to carry it out.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools takes all threats seriously and will work closely with law enforcement to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

We encourage you to talk with your children about their online presence, digital responsibility, and the seriousness of making any threat.

No early student pick-up between 2:45-3:20pm-Thank you No early student pick-up between 2:45-3:20pm-Thank you

Please do not pick-up children between 2:45 and 3:20pm. We respect that some appointments or obligations will require you to pick-up your child(ren) early from school. If you have an appointment and you must pick up your child early, please expect delays and please come before 2:45 pm. In the spirit of safety, our dismissal process involves all staff and it is very difficult to get available staff to get a student early from their classroom and bring them to the office between 2:45 and 3:20 pm. Please do not pick-up children between 2:45 and 3:20pm. This greatly affects our safe and efficient dismissal process. Thank you for your continued support.

Student Medication at School Student Medication at School

Does your student need medication administered during the day?

Parents must complete this medication form for any student needing medication at school: https://wwcsd-cdn.fxbrt.com/downloads/district/medication_administration_form.pdf

We cannot administer any medication to students unless we have this form completed and on file at school. This includes prescriptions and over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Rolaids, Benadryl...etc. Please call the main office (734-419-2720) if you have any questions.

Please Do Not Bring Your Pet to School Please Do Not Bring Your Pet to School

We know that pets are a huge part of many families. However, please do not bring your pets to school when walking your child(ren) to and from school. Student arrival time and dismissal time can be a very anxious time. Bringing your dog or cat when you are walking on campus to drop-off or pick-up your student can be very sensitive for some kids and adults. We do not want anyone accidently bitten or scratched. Safety first.

Thank you for supporting our kids and families by keeping your dogs and pets at home.

Stranger Danger Tips Stranger Danger Tips

The purpose of this information is to act as a reminder to revisit safety discussions and review safety tips with your child(ren) at home. Student safety is our highest priority and we appreciate every one helping to keep each other safe. The intent of this communication is not to alarm children and families. The goal of this information is to provide tools for families and kids to feel safe and to be safe. Fortunately, we live in a society where most people are good-intentioned. However, there are some people in our society who take advantage of others and do bad things. For that reason, we need to be vigilant and cautious. If there were ever any reported stranger danger safety concerns in our Roosevelt-McGrath area, please know that the school would immediately send out a stranger danger email and voice message informing you of any safety concerns.

Here are some safety tip suggestions to help guide discussions with your children at home:

  • Think SAFETY first. Report any incident to your parents and/or school personnel, and most importantly, the police by calling 911.

  • Always walk with one or more fellow students when going to and from the bus stop or anywhere else.

  • Do not walk alone.

  • If a stranger approaches and attempts to have a conversation with you, do not respond to him or her. Don’t talk with them. By responding, you could encourage their actions.

  • Do not accept anything from a stranger.

  • Do not get in the vehicle of a stranger, regardless of what they tell you.

  • In the event a stranger pursues you, go to the nearest door and knock loudly, and yell, if necessary. While we would not typically knock on the door of someone we do not know, when a stranger is pursuing, we must take every action to ensure safety. Keep in mind, when you approach someone’s door, the stranger has no idea whether you know the people living in that residence. Such action alone may deter the stranger and prompt them to leave the scene immediately.

  • Additionally, please know that any teacher, school staff member, school bus driver, Wayne Westland or city service vehicle may also be a safety resource during these events.
