A Note from Our Principal

This year has been full of changes, yet we are happy the children are back in school. The staff appreciates the support parents and families have given us during this difficult time. Our goal is to educate your children and to keep them safe. Students and staff have done a fantastic job of adjusting to wearing masks and other safety protocols. Please continue to support us as we navigate through this school year. October is filled with many events including: Conferences, Title One reading event (Oct 8 at 3:00), Fall fundraiser, school pictures, Fall Festival (this will be replacing our Halloween parties and parades- more information to come on this week of fun).

Reminder that breakfast begins at 8:00. Students not eating breakfast can enter the building at 8:15 and go to their respective playgrounds. At dismissal, Kindergarteners can be picked up at 3:25 from the classroom doors. Second and Third graders also dismiss at 3:25 while first, fourth, and fifth dismiss at 3:30. Please remember to use the parking lot. After 3:20 the front road opens but this is not for people to park and get out of the car. Kindergarten parents should park in the lot and not leave cars unattended in the fire lane.

The FAST reading and math assessments are completed. If your child is at risk, you will receive a letter. Teachers differentiate to support all learners based on this data. Thank you for encouraging your child to read at home and practice math facts.

If you have concerns, please contact us.

Join Our Grassroots Advocacy Committee

The Sioux City Community School District needs your voice on the Grassroots Advocacy Committee. Would you be willing to be a volunteer for our school? There is VERY LITTLE time commitment and you NEVER have to attend a meeting. As a volunteer, you agree to receive email updates about important legislative events that have an impact on public education. Then, we ask that you take the information you receive and contact our local legislators to let your voice be heard in advocacy of good public education. Advice will be provided on how you can email, call, or write a letter to the legislators. Take a look at some of the past advocacy for reference: http://www.uen-ia.org/legislation.htm. You can also look at the Legislative Action Priorities set by our school board: https://www.siouxcityschools.org/legislative-action-priorities/. Please contact our school principal to ask questions or volunteer.

Box Tops for Education

We are collecting Box Tops! Traditional Box Tops clips are being phased out of production, but may continue to be found on many products throughout a store. You can still clip and send them to school.

Every valid Box Tops clip is worth 10¢ for Loess Hills. Make sure each one has a clearly visible product acronym and expiration date.

Box Tops - New Scanning Feature

Eventually the Box Tops program will become digital-only. Participating brands are starting to change their packaging from a traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Top label.

If you see this label, use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth 10¢ each for Loess Hills. The app will find participating products purchased at any store and instantly add cash to our school's earnings online.

Hy-Vee Receipts - Cash For Students Program

We would love to collect your Hy-Vee receipts from the Sioux City or South Sioux City Hy-Vee stores. For every $100 dollars collected the school will receive $1 dollar!

Eligible receipts for groceries, prescriptions, floral, photoshop, and catering are accepted.

(No fuel, gas, postal, money order, Western Union, lottery, Quest, Mid American, bottle refunds or gift card receipts will be accepted.)

Winter Weather Information

With cold weather upon us, it’s important to plan for inclement weather. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Suggested apparel includes a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves. If a student needs access to these cold weather apparel items, please contact the school office.

Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual. However, if a student does not have appropriate winter clothing, a school official may ask a student to remain inside.

When the atmosphere reaches a temperature that feels like 15 degrees or less, then all students are kept inside for recess/activities. The “feel” of the temperature is determined based on the National Weather Service’s report.
Thank you for helping us keep students safe and warm this season.

School Closure Information

The winter in Iowa provides us with some days that make it a challenge to hold classes at the regular time, and sometimes we must close our schools early, late, or for the entire day. As you know, our weather is not only challenging at times, it is constantly changing.

Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to decide to keep their child home on any day that they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a genuine reason why you may have to keep your students at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact your child’s school to let them know.

If a decision is made on the day of school to cancel classes or to have a late start, a call goes out at 6:00 AM to all parents and guardians. Parents can also check the following sites for closure information.

1. GovDelivery https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/IAEDU6039/subscriber/new?qsp=CODE_RED
2. District’s Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SiouxCityCommSchools
3. District’s Twitter @siouxcityschool
4. All media outlets

If the schools are dismissed early or if school is called off entirely, there will be no evening activities. If you have before and after school care, please check with your provider about their procedures.

Communication and Preparedness

Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.

Focus 2022 Strategic Plan

The Sioux City Community School District Board of Directors spent time developing, with the input of multiple stakeholder groups, the “Definition of the Well-Educated Student.” The definition is the foundation for the Focus 2022 Strategic Plan. The definition identifies what students within the educational system will be able to do upon graduating from our district. Learn about the five goal areas of the strategic plan.
