WICOR is a collection of teaching and learning strategies to guide students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at increasingly complex levels. Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading. WICOR strategies support student learning in any classroom at Nichols.

WICOR is an instructional approach involving both teachers and students that places students at the center and empowers them to take ownership and agency in their thinking and learning. When educators create instructional experiences integrated in the rich layers of WICOR, students are actively engaged with content through productive struggle, cognitive wrestling, and critical thinking to access rigorous content from a multitude of perspectives and use it to create new innovations, challenge old ideas, and positively impact the world around them.

Nichols' focus is to incorporate WICOR strategies in all classrooms at all grade levels.

6th Grade

In Ms. Lopez's 6th grade AVID classes, students participated in a practice tutorial session, where they reviewed each of the 10 steps in the tutorial process. They completed their first Tutorial Request Form (TRF) and engaged in a group discussion to address points of confusion.

Students have practiced the Tutorial Process 3 times so far! It's that important to master. The goals of this process are:

πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸŽ“ To use the Socratic Method

πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸŽ“ To use an inquiry process to push each other's thinking

πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸŽ“ To facilitate the learning process by not giving the answers, but by finding "the way" to the answer

πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸŽ“ To ask more questions and to learn the processes of the answer.

Ms. Stone has been working with our 8th grade AVID scholars intentionally focused on organization with routine binder checks where students are practicing self-assessing a standards based rubric. Additionally they are exceptionally good at peer reviews for binder checks!

Scholars are also focused on learning the value of keeping their personal spaces organized by cleaning out their lockers in order to start maintaining organization overall.

In order to support the tutorial process, Ms. Stone has invited 8th grade teachers to come to her AVID classes on Tuesday's and Thursday's - days in which the TRF process takes place. We have been super excited about the number of teachers coming - Ms. Verzo (Math), Ms. Consiglio (ELA), Ms. Sopcic (ELA), Mr. Kim (Math), Ms. Puro (ELA), Ms. Stiff (Math) and Ms. Howe (Math). These teachers provide direct support for content in order to support the overall tutorial process. The majority of the questions or as we call it in AVID - point of confusion - are Math and ELA related. Really grateful to the direct content support our teachers are providing!

Would you Rather...go to school 50 years in the future or 50 years in the past? Future because there's more technology, but (thinking more about it) in the past, we would learn better because it was harder. There was no technology and no one would get screen addicted.

Time Management and Organization

How does effective organization of time and materials lead to academic success? What can we do at home to support our student with organization?

Time management is one of the first organizational skills a student will want to master. Developing time management skills requires students to analyze how they spend their time, decide upon priorities, and start to plan ahead. The ability to implement a time management system is crucial to student success.

Time management is -

  • Focusing on school work while in class
  • Staying on task
  • Asking for clarification when needed
  • Completing class work and homework on time
  • Knowing what to do when work is completed
  • Scheduling both Study Buddy time and independent study time
  • Allowing preparation for projects
  • Beginning homework after school every day
  • Acquiring supplies for projects ahead of time
  • Providing quality study time
  • Managing project timeliness effectively

Please see below for daily and weekly time management templates. Feel free to ask your school counselor for copies and help with implementation.

A Note from the Counselors A Note from the Counselors

Key Characteristics of College & Career Readiness

AVID seeks to support students in developing the knowledge, skills, and characteristics that they need to plan for and achieve college and career success. AVID provides teachers with lessons and activities to reinforce these skills and enhance understanding.

The four key characteristics of college and career ready students are:

πŸ’₯ Self-Awareness: Self-awareness is the knowledge of one’s own character, including strengths, weaknesses, feelings, and motivations. Teachers guide self-awareness development in students by focusing on a growth mindset, self-knowledge, and identifying learning preferences.

πŸ’₯ Self-Care: Self-care is the proactive and intentional maintenance of one’s health and well-being. Teachers focus on habits of health, wellness, social-emotional learning, and positive support

systems.

πŸ’₯ Self-Monitoring: Self-monitoring is the ability to be in control of one’s behavior to adapt successfully to a variety of academic and social situations. Teachers guide the development of self-monitoring by focusing on intrinsic and extrinsic motivators and highlighting perseverance and grit in action.

πŸ’₯ Self-Advocacy: Self-advocacy entails all 3! Self-awareness, self-care, and self-monitoring. Teachers guide self-advocacy development by focusing on communication, mental flexibility, and leadership opportunities.
