Dear Highlander Families,

Today was Senior Fest and another tradition that brings our seniors one step closer to graduation. Time is flying by as we count down (161 days?) towards graduation. Enjoy these moments as much as you can.

Makeup picture day will be on September 10 from 9 to 3:30 pm in the AHT lobby. Students can walk in when they have time--brunch, lunch, open periods to get a photo retake or an original photo, if you missed walk-through registration. Please make an effort to do this so yearbook staff can ensure that all students have a high quality photo.

Lastly, we continue to invite our families to come enjoy our student-athletes in the many competitions that are taking place now. They love the support and are so gracious. Our first home football game versus Berean Christian is next Friday. It is a western theme is you are looking for an excuse to put on your boots and cowboy hat.

Warmly,

Dr. Yoshihara

Please join Piedmont High School in reflection and recognition of the lives lost on September 11, 2001. On September 11, we also remember PHS alumnus John Christopher Stevens who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and was killed while serving in office in 2012. As a way to honor him and his life's work, the Piedmont High School library was named the Ambassador Christopher Stevens Memorial Library in 2013. In his life and career, Ambassador Stevens believed in promoting global peace through friendships that enhanced cultural understanding among people.

We invite our community to learn more about Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens here.

We wanted to thank all our families for supporting our teachers on BTSN yesterday. We had great attendance and so many great questions.

I also wanted to do a shout out to our counseling team, Chris Hartford, Amanda Carlson, and Michelle Huang; for their willingness to share important information with our new families at the start of the night.

For families who were not able to make it and would like to review the presentations, you may do so at the link below. Thanks again for a great school-wide event!

Ariel is reaching out to gather as many student speakers as possible to advocate virtually to restore AC transit bus route 33 in Piedmont at the AC Transit Board meeting next Wed., Sept. 10 at 5pm. The closure of a part of route 33 in Piedmont is an issue that has affected some PUSD students and families.

This is a time sensitive opportunity to advocate locally and earn the PUSD State Seal of Civic Engagement on a student's transcript and diploma for college admissions purposes.

For more information, please see the link here.

Ariel will hold an informational meeting next Tuesday, Sept. 9 in Mercedes' room.

The AC Transit Board meeting is next Wednesday, Sept. 10th at 5pm. Ariel will provide students dinner and is planning to meet in Room 30A.

Calling all teens and their parents! Get your volunteer hours in at PEF’s Harvest Festival Carnival on 9/21 by signing up for a 2-hour slot below.

The 27th Annual Harvest Festival is around the corner and the Piedmont Education Foundation (PEF) is looking for lots of hands to help run the carnival at the Harvest Festival on 9/21 in Piedmont Park. The Carnival is not only a fun, community building way to spend a Sunday – it’s also one of the critical ways the Piedmont Education Foundation (PEF) raises funds for the elementary schools. Last year’s carnival and scarecrow silent auction raised $28K to help fund theater, music, and counseling programs at Beach, Wildwood, and Havens. Be a part of the magic of giving back to our amazing elementary schools!

Phones Will Be Confiscated Starting Next Week Phones Will Be Confiscated Starting Next Week

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

As we wrap up our third week of school, we continue to pivot on supporting our school to be cell phone free except for lunch. Overall, students are doing an impressive job with not being on their devices. We do want to help.

  • Open Periods: If students have a free period and they are on campus, they shall not be on their phone. This reinforces the fact that we are a phone-free campus, does not send mixed messages to passing students, and allows us all to focus on learning.
  • Passing periods: We know all our teachers use the cell phone hotel. Picking up your phone from that hotel and holding it in your hand for 10 minutes can be very tempting. If the temptation is too great, we encourage students to power their phone down until lunch. This reduces the temptation to see all the messages that may be popping up.
  • Brunch: Students may not be able to resist the temptation to take a quick peek to type something or read a quick message. Again, we recommend powering phones down to reduce the temptation.

Starting next week, Mr. Bell, Mr. Marik, and Mr. Yoshihara will begin collecting phones and possibly devices during passing, brunch, and during open periods. Each instance of our collection will result in an entry into our student information, and the phone being kept in the office for the remainder of the day. Repeated instances of this may require the parent to pick up the phone.

We know this may be hardest for our seniors, but by being great role models, it will make it easier for our underclassmen to see how to Achieve the Honorable.

Now that we are a few weeks into school and fall sports are starting, you may be interested in general PHS Spirit Wear. This is available in the School Store, and we are starting to process orders. They are done in batches so depending on volume, it may take a few weeks to get them to you. These are great to wear on Fridays (or any day) or to any of our home games to support our student athletes.

Wellness Center Fundraiser Wellness Center Fundraiser

Dear Friends of the Wellness Center,

In order to continue providing essential care to Piedmont students, the Wellness Center must raise at least $50,000 for the 2025–2026 school year. Adolescent mental health needs are expanding and the Wellness Center is continuing to rise to support students as they navigate school, relationships and their development.

In the 2024-25 school year, one in three PHS and MHS students and one in four PMS students visited the Wellness Center. Your donation directly ensures that every Piedmont student has access to expert mental health care and support services.

Donate here: PiedmontWellness.org

Your generosity supports the Wellness Center’s mission to help students navigate emotional and social challenges, including anxiety, stress, depression, grief, relationship issues, and substance use. Contributions of any amount are deeply appreciated and make a meaningful difference.

As a token of our appreciation:

  • All donors over $250 will be recognized on the Wellness Center website

  • Donors of $500 or more will receive an invitation to a Wellness Center Sponsor reception on October 9th at a private home in Piedmont, featuring a moderated panel of teen mental health experts.

  • Major donors over $1,000 will have their name added to the gratitude wall in the Wellness Center, celebrating community support.

“Having the wellness center is like having a safety blanket at school, knowing that if you can't handle something or become too stressed out, you have a place you can go to just breathe or talk through things. Piedmont High is extremely lucky to have the Wellness Center.” - PHS student testimony

During the 2024–2025 school year, the Wellness Center was able to provide:

  • Approximately 2,000 therapy sessions for PUSD middle and high school students

  • Ongoing support for over 150 students

  • Nearly 3,500 snacks provided to students

  • Practitioner training sessions conducted by industry experts

Thank you for helping us prioritize the mental health and well-being of Piedmont students.

With gratitude,
The Wellness Center Support Committee: Cortney Allen, Bridget Brennan, Kat Di Piazza, Martin Diller, Naomi Edelson, Rita Fabi, Ellie Griffinger - Guidi, Neha Gupta, Lauren Hartman, Martha Joerger, Amelie Kappes, Genevieve Klyce, Dana Lung, Jodie Marko, Sarah Meyjes, Gina Midili, Samantha Nobles Block, Sarah Pearson, Bridget Schreiber, Katie Sharafi, Ashley Stevanovic, Brooke Zimmerman, Rachel Zimmerman
