SBIRT Partnership with MGH and Harvard Medical School
Mass General Hospital and Harvard Medical School chose Salem Public Schools to be part of an exciting research opportunity. This 5 year study is looking at better ways to implement SBIRT screenings in schools. Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a screening tool used by mental health professionals to identify, reduce and prevent problematic use of substances. Mass state law dictates that this survey be administered to students in grades 7 and 10. Salem Public Schools was randomized to be part of the "treatment group" arm of the study. This means that Wellness Coaches will be performing the survey and interventions. Please click HERE for more information about the investigator and the study.

Physical Activities
Here are some ideas to keep the family busy and active over the February Break:
Salem Woods: The Salem Woods is a beautiful nature reserve located just outside of the city, and in the winter, it's a great place to go for a hike. The trails are less crowded than in the summer, and the snow-covered trees and frozen streams create a serene and peaceful atmosphere. You can also go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on the trails. More info HERE
Peabody Essex Museum: Free for residents of Salem and great idea for Feb break to learn and play. More info HERE
Ice Skating: Many DCR rinks offer public skating on weekends and Learn To Skate Programs. Nearby rinks are located in Peabody and Lynn. More info HERE
Hiking: There are several state parks in the local area that offer self guided hikes. More info HERE
