MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BANKS MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BANKS

Dear Eagles and Families,

The second quarter has officially begun. In the event that your grade did not meet your expectations, let’s consider some of the following suggestions:

  • Staying positive: Don't let a bad grade define you or your self-worth. Instead, try to use it as motivation to work harder.

  • Setting realistic goals: Make sure your goals are attainable and achievable.

  • Taking care of yourself: Get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise to help you feel better.

  • Talking to someone: A teacher can help you brainstorm ideas to improve your grades. You can also talk to peers or family for support and encouragement.

  • Taking advantage of resources: Use tutoring services, writing centers, or counselors to get help.

  • Improving your study skills: Make sure you're using effective study techniques, like setting aside time to study and using study guides.

  • Keeping things in perspective: Grades are important, but they're not the only measure of your intelligence or worth.

  • Putting less pressure on yourself: Studies show that less academic stress can lead to better performance.

We want our students to be reflective in the grades that they earn and recognize that improvement is within their power.

Sincerely,

Lindblom Administration

Drop Off/Pick Up

Students can be dropped off or picked up on Wolcott and Winchester. Double Parking is prohibited! Please be considerate of the handicap ramps on Winchester and DO NOT park in front of the ramp. There is Safe Passage surrounding the perimeter of Lindblom and we'd like to enforce a "Kiss and Go" to avoid traffic back-ups; therefore, consider use of alternate blocks (like Damen, 61st Street, etc) for ease of traffic.

Students may enter the building through Door 3 (on Wolcott) or Door 9 (on Winchester). Please be mindful that these are the only doors that students should exit during/after dismissal.

Starting second semester, students with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 after 7 semesters can qualify for college-ready coursework without having to take a placement exam or have the requisite SAT score. Please consider if you have students who can take advantage of this increased opportunity to participate in early college coursework and if this new qualifier would make additional spring dual credit coursework more feasible.

HVC at the Univ of Chicago Medicine

Heart and Vascular Center Mentorship (HVC) program is designed to provide High School Juniors and Seniors a leg up in pursuing career and education goals in science and medicine, through 1 on 1 mentorship.

Students will have the chance to shadow and learn from doctors, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other scientists and health care professionals at the University of Chicago throughout the duration of the program. Students in the program also receive a laptop ( which they get to keep) and have the opportunity to be part of paid internship over the summer.

In addition to the practical experience students will receive in the program, we also offer tutoring led by UChicago undergraduates and medical students as well as help with college and scholarship applications. We also develop and participate in community service projects in the hospital and the Southside.

Attached is a flyer containing information and here is the registration link for our Virtual Kick Off event Friday, November 1st 2024 5:00 PM-6:00 PM. During this event students will have a chance to learn more about the program from current members and how it has helped them. All students who register will automatically be entered into a drawing for a $200 gift card, and the winner will be announced at the end of the event .

SAFETY UPDATE

It’s the time of year when the days are getting shorter and darkness comes early. For the safety of our students, we’re reminding you that our building closes at 5:30 pm. We often find students hanging around to mingle with friends and then they walk to the bus stop alone. We don’t recommend this behavior and we are concerned about it.

Fight Like a Girl

We offer a free girls boxing program called Fight Like a Girl that uses the powerful sport of boxing to build discipline, confidence, and mind-body connection. Our program is staffed with trained boxing coaches and licensed therapists to make sure we are meeting the needs of all girls and helping them actualize their full potential in the gym, school, and life. Girls in the program will have the opportunity to sign up for free one-on-one therapy sessions.

Learn more about the program here: https://boxunited.org/pages/our-program

We have launched a new program in South Shore, and several Lindblom students have already enrolled. Because of the distance, we are providing transportation assistance to these students to get them to program every Tuesday. We still have space in our program and transportation support available for a few more Lindblom students. I would love to get the word out to any interested students. I have attached an informational flyer with a sign up link that can be distributed directly with students and families.

Attendance

Our week nine attendance ended with 92.97%. This week begins our updated tardy policy. Students that are late to first and/or fifth period will count towards their 5 tardies in a week. The attendance policy is included here. We will also celebrate our students that maintain 95% or better attendance, and currently 59% of our student body meets this metric. AS you can see from the chart, our 7th graders are on top! Following behind them are the 9th graders. Feel free to email Mr. Hayes, our attendance coordinator, if there are questions about your attendance, bdhayes2@cps.edu.
