HT Athletics: Husky Highlights from Last Week
HT Golfer Merritt Daniel Wins Sub-State; Advances to State
Hewitt-Trussville’s Merritt Daniel shot a 73 on Monday at the AHSAA North Sub-State Tournament to capture medalist honors. The event was held at Hampton Cove in Huntsville. Daniel won by three shots over the second-place golfer. Her round included an impressive 15 pars, one birdie, and two bogies.
Daniel has now advanced to the AHSAA State Tournament which will be held May 11-12 in Mobile.
Outdoor Track: Boys 2nd; Girls 3rd at State Meet
Hewitt-Trussville’s Outdoor Track and Field team delivered on the biggest stage, as the Huskies brought home a red map with a runner-up finish in Class 7A on the boys side while the girls team earned a third-place finish at the AHSAA 7A Outdoor State Championships in Gulf Shores, AL this weekend.
From start to finish, the Huskies showed just how deep this team is. The boys consistently piled up points with podium finishes, top-eight placements, and strong relay performances to stay in the title hunt all weekend. When the final scores were posted, Hewitt-Trussville stood as the 7A state runner-up, capping off one of the most complete team efforts of the season and finishing with 103.5 points.
The girls were just as impressive, turning in scoring performances across multiple events to secure a third-place finish in Class 7A with 62 points. Their consistency across the board played a major role in keeping them near the top of the standings.
Individually, it was a weekend full of standout performances.
In the para ambulatory events, George Merchant earned points in the boys 100m and dominated in the field, taking first in both the discus and shot put, while also claiming first in the javelin. Sarah Thomas finished 2nd in both the 100m and 200m para ambulatory races and Caylin Kennemur finished 3rd, but also broke the state records in shot put and discus.
On the track, the Huskies saw big-time finishes across the board. Devin Kouanvih captured a state title in the boys 200m, while Demetri Hall Jr. took first in the 300m hurdles. Max Ryan placed third in the 800m, and Noah Jordan had a strong distance showing with a second-place finish in the 1600m and third in the 3200m, with John Paul Amari adding a sixth-place finish in the 3200m.
For the girls, Mary Durham finished second in the 800m and added a fifth-place finish in the 1600m, while Emmie Goodell placed fourth in the 800m. Olivia Reese earned a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles.
In the hurdles, Raphael Boakye-Yiadom placed fourth in the 110m hurdles and later added a third-place finish in the triple jump, while Daryl Thomas Jr. finished fifth in the 110m hurdles and sixth in the 300m hurdles. Matthew McGuire added a fifth-place finish in the 400m.
In the field events, Jaliyah Edwards placed second in the discus and third in the shot put, while Savannah Bullock added a sixth-place finish in the discus. Ben Reeves cleared his way to a second-place finish in the pole vault, with Charlie Peacock finishing sixth. Brooklyn Vandegrift also placed sixth in the girls pole vault.
In the jumps, Will Phillips finished seventh in the long jump, while Lia Carter placed eighth on the girls side. The boys triple jump group added major points with Boakye-Yiadom (3rd), Zion Westry (4th), and Ethan Ridley (6th).
Relay teams also played a key role in the team standings. The boys 4x100 relay team finished second, while the girls 4x100 placed seventh. The boys 4x800 team earned a third-place finish, and the girls 4x800 relay team captured a state championship with a first-place finish.
By the end of the weekend, the results spoke for themselves— a red map for the boys, a third-place finish for the girls, and a long list of podium finishes, personal bests, and championship performances that showed exactly what this program is capable of.
Boys Soccer Advances to Final Four
Hewitt-Trussville is headed to the Final Four, but it didn’t come easy.
In a playoff matchup against top-ranked Florence, the Huskies battled through one of the toughest games of the season, needing double overtime and penalty kicks to get it done.
Florence came in as one of the best teams in the state, and the match played out exactly like you’d expect. Both teams traded chances and controlled stretches of play, with neither side giving an inch. By the end of regulation, it was still tied 1-1.
Overtime didn’t settle anything either. Through two extra periods, both defenses held strong and every possession felt like it could decide the game, but no one could find the breakthrough.
That set up penalty kicks.
With the pressure at its highest, Hewitt-Trussville stayed composed. The Huskies stepped up and delivered, knocking in their chances while coming up with key stops on the other end. When the final kick was blocked, the celebration was on, because Hewitt had taken down the No. 1 team in the state.
Now the Huskies move on to the Final Four, where they’ll face Bob Jones on Thursday at 3pm in Huntsville.
Softball Wins Area Tournament Title
Hewitt-Trussville Softball was down 5-0 to Vestavia on Tuesday night but rallied for 14 consecutive runs to beat the Rebels 14-5 to win the 7A Area 6 tournament title. The Huskies are now 41-9-1 on the season.
After Vestavia took a 5-0 lead, the Huskies scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings and two runs in the 5th inning to cut the lead to 5-4. HT then exploded for 10 runs in the 6th inning. Corey Goguts homered to give the Huskies the lead. Livie Bullington, Emily Renda, and Erin Coleman all drove in runs during the rally. Macie Goins pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.
The Huskies now advance to the North Regional in Florence. HT will face Sparkman in the opening game Monday at 10:45am.
Varsity Baseball sweeps James Clemens
Hewitt-Trussville Varsity Baseball earned a big road sweep over James Clemens on tonight, taking Game 1 in dominant fashion, 12-1, before closing out the night with a 3-2 win in Game 2.
In the opener, the Huskies exploded for 12 runs on 11 hits, led by Wes Hardy’s four RBIs. Sawyer Jackson added three hits, and Hudson Mitchell was strong on the mound, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out eight.
Game 2 was much tighter, with Hewitt rallying late. Jace Riggan delivered an RBI single, and Hudson Mitchell drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead. Cale McIntosh pitched 6.1 solid innings, and Riggan closed it out for the save.
From a dominant offensive showcase in Game 1 to a clutch, late-inning finish in Game 2, Hewitt-Trussville showed its complete team strength in the sweep and continues to build momentum as the Huskies move on traveling to face Tuscaloosa County this weekend in round 2 of the AHSAA State Playoffs.
