CULTURE DAY!!
Worthingway celebrated Culture Day today. This event was the idea of student Maram Ahmad. She created a student leadership team including Victoria Ossa, Sharon Rose Adeyemi, and Madeline El-Shammaa. And that team partnered with two teachers: Mrs. Newcomb and Ms. Segarra. This student and teacher team garnered the support and involvement of many other students and staff members to design and facilitate this day.
As the building principal, I was excited but also nervous for this day. Our students and staff rose to the occasion and today was an absolutely positive experience for everyone. I could not be more proud of our staff and students.
Check out some of our videos from the day:
Principal's Message
Our district embarked on a valuable and collaborative task in 2023-24: creating a Portrait of a Learner. The community, staff, and students participated in several stakeholder meetings over the course of a year to design the Portrait. The result is a set of portraits tailored to specific grade levels: an elementary-specific Portrait, a middle-school specific Portrait, and an overall K-12 Portrait. These Portraits encompass character traits that we strive for all of our students to practice and develop during their time as a Worthington student.
The Middle School Portrait of a Learner highlights four areas:
Solution Seeker
Global Thinker
Resilient Learner
Kind, Empathetic Friend
Having these documents is important as they guide our path. However, the key to implementation is strategically and intentionally developing opportunities for our students to practice and build them. Moving those skills from paper to practice is the most powerful way we will truly help to prepare and empower our students to be those “who will change the world.” It is often done through small moments in the classroom setting. Our staff is mindful about weaving skill building opportunities into their lessons. Additionally, we strive to create and cultivate a sense of belonging for all of our students.
Today was a day in which we saw all of those skills in action with our students. Our students initiated the idea of Culture Day and worked collaboratively with our staff to plan and facilitate the entire school day. During that planning process, I observed our student leaders engaging in problem-solving strategies to build curiosity, connections, and alternative solutions to problems that they encountered. Throughout the day I observed our students learning about a variety of perspectives, investigating the world, and communicating their ideas. I observed our students choosing words and actions that reflect empathy, kindness, and hope. I observed our students adapting to develop confidence and character through the activities they participated in.
I am really, really proud of our staff and students. I am also deeply grateful for our parent volunteers who helped out today. And a special thank you to our central office staff and Board of Education members that were able to either visit our building today or sent their words of encouragement and support.
THANK YOU
- We would like to give a huge shoutout to all the people who worked so hard to give our students an amazing experiential day of learning about Global Cultures! Thank you to all who volunteered to serve food samples, everyone who spent extra time organizing and working on details, and all the families who supported their student's presentations. A special thanks to Maram Ahmad, Sharon-Rose Adeyemi, Maddie El-Shammaa, and Victoria Ossa for their leadership. Thank you also to Masa Mexican Grill for the delicious samples of salsa and chips, and the PTA for the funding support for cookies and prizes and guest experts honorariums. We. Are. Worthingway. :-)
Important UPDATES
Honors Nights
- We are excited to host our Honors Nights this year. For those new to the school, Honor Nights do not include all students. If your student is to be included, you will receive an invitation in the mail. Those invitations have already been sent out and should have already been received at home. We will also be sending an email next week to the families of the students who are invited.
- If you have any questions or are unsure if your student has met the criteria to be recognized, you may call our front office.
- 6th and 7th grade Honor Night will both be on Wednesday, May 7. The 6th grade Honors Night will start 6pm in the gym. The 7th grade Honors Night will start at 7pm in the gym. Parking will be difficult. We are asking 6th grade families to be mindful of others and not delay in leaving at the conclusion of the sixth grade ceremony. We are asking that 7th grade families wait until at least 6:30 to arrive.

DACC Summer Camps
This year's DACC Summer Camp will run June 3-5 on our main campus, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. It will be open to rising 7th-9th graders from the following districts: Big Walnut, Buckeye Valley, Delaware city, Olentangy, Worthington and Westerville. It will cost $40 per camper. We are excited to offer 11 camps this year, spanning all areas of our building. You can view our full list of camps here. We're excited about this list of camps because we believe it offers something for everyone — learners with all kinds of interests and passions!
These camps are fantastic opportunities for local middle school students to learn new skills, make new friends and begin to experience the magic of career-technical education in their own community. For many students, it is also an impactful week of early career exploration, as they will get to learn from and alongside industry professionals and current DACC students.
Registration for this year's Summer Camp will open Tuesday, March 4th, at 6 a.m. Each camp will have its own registration link, located next to the camp title found on this Summer Camp landing page. We will advise interested families to bookmark that link and mark that date and time on their calendar, as these camps have filled up quickly in years past.
