KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear KMS Families,
KMS will conduct regularly scheduled drills during this school year. Conducting drills is an important part of our preparation for emergency situations and help staff, students and families understand what to expect during an emergency.
As a school district we understand that some emergency drills, like lockdown drills, can elicit concern and stress because of the nature of the drill. To help lower the levels of stress around lockdown drills, which will increase the ability for students to create the muscle memory around what they need to do, we are communicating early to you and your students about the upcoming lockdown drill at Kodiak Middle School which will be held the week of 9/23-9/27.
Teachers will notify students the day before or the morning of the drill. Please see the attached flyer on the Standard Response Protocol for more information on Lockdowns.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE
Also, it has come to the attention of the administrators that there has been a recent uptick in vandalism in the school's bathrooms. Over the past few days, students have been vandalizing the 6th & 7th grade bathrooms, including graffiti with hurtful language.
If the bathroom continues to be vandalized, we may have to close the bathroom down when there is no direct supervision available.
While the school is taking steps to address this issue, we believe that it is important for parents to be involved in helping to solve the problem as well. We ask that you please remind your child of the importance of treating school property with respect and encourage them to report any instances of vandalism they may witness. We hope that with the help of parents and the school's efforts, we can put an end to this unacceptable behavior and ensure that our school remains a safe and welcoming place for all students.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

COOKIE DOUGH FUNDRAISER 9/27 - 10/7
Our Cookie Dough Fundraiser starts Friday, September 27! All students will receive a sales packet with the order form, directions, cookie dough information, and a checklist.
We are hoping to break last year's record and bring in tons of funds for our students and teachers this year! So all help is appreciated - who doesn't love Cougar Mountain Cookie Dough? Our flavors this year are: Original Chocolate Chip, Classic Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Raisin Cinnamon, Spiced Molasses-Ginger, Double Chocolate Hazelnut, All-Butter Rolled Sugar, and Pumpkin!
We will turn in the sales packets to Advisory teachers on Friday, October 7th - so that's only 2 weeks.
The top 15 student sellers will earn a prize, be able to choose from: a mini fridge (we have 2!), Beats headphones, Beats earbuds, rip stick, Viper-style sunglasses, VIP Lunch Pass, Friendship Bracelet Making Kit, Nail Art Kit, LED Projector, Glow Wubble Ball, Tie Dye Kit, LED Bean Bag Toss and Over-the-Door Basketball Hoop. The student with the top sales will pick a prize first, and then second place, then third, and on down the line.
Every student who sells at least TWO tubs of cookie dough will be entered into a separate raffle, as well. GOOD LUCK TO ALL STUDENTS!
Students in the Industrial Arts program are getting familiar with tools and wood types as we begin the year! These students are using steady hands to stack nails – each class trying to stack more than the other classes. So far, the record is 47 nails stacked on just ONE nail head.
This week all students will take the safety test and will be constructing a 2’ ruler to get familiar with measurements.
