December 1st 2025
A Message from Your Principal Team
Dear Washington Families,
We are excited to welcome everyone back and jump into learning once again! We hope you and your family enjoyed a restful and well-deserved break. While students were away, our staff had the opportunity to join colleagues from across the Woodburn School District for the Learning Together, Better Together Conference 2025— two inspiring days filled with sessions focused on strengthening teaching and learning for all students.
As we look ahead to December, our school calendar is full of wonderful events and opportunities for students and families. The best way to stay up-to-date is by checking the WSD Events Calendar, which includes details and start times. We’ll also share individual flyers through our social media pages as they become available.
A quick but important reminder: as temperatures continue to drop, please send students dressed for outdoor play. Fresh air and daily movement are essential for healthy brains and bodies. If your family needs support with warm clothing, please reach out to our office—we’re here to help.
Stay warm, stay safe, and as always… Go Eagles!🦅
Warmly,
Alfredo Belanger, Principal
Antonio Ramos, Asst. Principal
What is happening at Washington?
Too sick for school?
Remember being a kid and not wanting to go to school? Whether because a throat is sore or feelings are hurt, when kids regularly miss school, we should all take note: Here’s why: Besides signaling that there’s an issue, those absences – whether excused or not – add up. Students can fall behind -- quickly. If something is keeping a child you know from getting to school, there’s help. Speak with your child’s school, or visit every-day-matters.org.
State Academic Testing around the corner
Woodburn School District is committed to preparing every learner with academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. Oregon’s statewide assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics are fully aligned to Oregon’s State Standards and provide students in grades 3-8 and 11, along with their families, one measure of academic achievement and growth. Assessment results identify your child’s strengths and areas for improvement in English Language Arts and Math. Each subject will be broken into categories and will show how well your child performed in each area. The assessments measure student learning on a scale that allows for comparisons across time.
While no single assessment can give a complete picture of your child’s progress, having your child take the statewide assessments provides educators and administrators with one source of information about what educational approaches are working and where additional resources may be needed. The data from state assessments helps inform district systems, supports and professional development for educators. Your child’s participation is important to ensure our schools receive the targeted resources they need to help all students succeed. Your child’s school will share your child’s scores with you at the end of the current school year or the beginning of the next to help support your child’s success as they move from grade to grade.

YouthTruth Survey is complete!
Thank you for taking the time to complete the YouthTruth survey. Your feedback is incredibly valuable. We use this information to better understand your experiences and to guide our next steps as a school. The survey results help us strengthen communication, improve school climate, and ensure we are providing the best possible support for all students.
In the coming weeks, we will review the data with our staff and family groups and share the key themes along with the actions we plan to take. Your voice matters, and we appreciate your partnership as we continue working together to make Washington Elementary an even better place to learn and grow.
At the end of the survey window, we heard from 97% of our 3rd-5th grade students, 80% of our staff and only 12% of our amazing families.
If you have any questions about the survey, or our plans for how we will use your feedback, please contact me at abelanger@woodburnsd.org, or call the school at (971)-983-3050.
We are in need of some donations.
Washington families, we are in need clothing for boys and girls ages 5-7. We are specifically looking for things like pants, shorts, sweatpants, etc. Any type of bottom piece of clothing will help us provide much-needed clothing to our students when accidents happen. Please connect with Amy if you would like to donate or need more details. Your generosity helps ensure every student has what they need to feel comfortable and continue to learn. Thank you for your support!
