Battle of the Books
It is time for the Battle of the Books. If you're new to the Chap community, the district high school teacher-librarians drive this event, and the entire competition takes place on one day: Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Douglas County High School. We are looking for gift card donations of $10-20 for prizes!
If you're not familiar with the high school version, teams of (up to) 4 answer trivia questions covering 9 books — books nominated and voted on by the students early last fall. The event begins with a round-robin during which every team participates in at least three battles. Then we move on to the Sweet Sixteen, the Elite Eight, the Final Four, and, yes, eventually, the Championship! Chaparral is bringing 13 teams totaling 49 readers to the event — by far the most teams and the most competitors in DCSD!
DCSD High School Battle of the Books is run by the high school librarians, and there is no budget for the event. The DCSD teacher-librarians want every participant to leave with a prize, and given Chaparral's large representation, we try to bring the most prizes.

Watching these book-loving kids enthusiastically and joyfully and kindly battle other teams is one of the most beautiful experiences in DCSD. We thank you for your support of this cause and your support of these kids!

After Prom Update
Please join us for an After Prom planning meeting on January 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the Chaparral Library. All parents are welcome to attend, regardless of your student’s grade level.
After Prom provides a fun, safe way for students to spend time together following the dance. This special event is planned entirely by Chap families, and for it to continue in future years, we need parents who are willing to step up and take a leadership role. Your involvement makes a difference—we hope to see you there!

With the start of the new semester, we would like to remind you about NHS tutors. These amazing kids are willing to help others outside of class at the requesting student's preferred time and place. Students can request one-time help, like studying for a test, or general help, like homework help once a week.
We also have NHS tutors available in the library before and after school every day and during advisements and homerooms. Students can always get help from these tutors who are always on standby.
Good News from the District
We have so much good news to share!
The Colorado Department of Education released graduation rates from the 2024-2025 school year. DCSD’s graduation rate increased to 93.6% (from 92.2% in 2023-2024). This puts us at the highest graduation rate of school districts in the Denver/metro area! I’m so proud of all of the hard work of our students and staff!
While the Chaparral Class of 2024 (our most current statistic) had a graduation rate of 94%!
