Hello Families!

With 16 days of school under our belts, it feels like we're hitting our stride! Kindergarten students are confidently walking in and finding their classrooms, 1st grade students are getting to know their new crews, and 2nd graders are finding their footing as leaders of our school. My hope is that your family is also settling into this new rhythm.

One of the many great things about City Schools of Decatur is that all of our schools have a School Leadership Team (SLT). Oakhurst's (SLT) is an important crew that is created and guided by CSD's charter. SLT members - including administrative, staff, parent and community representatives - operate as a governing body with the purpose of maximizing school-level decisions. Parent representatives are an elected position and serve two-year terms. There will be two open parent seats this Fall; we will hold an election at Curriculum Night on Thursday, August 28th to fill those positions. We will send a voting link if you're unable to attend.

The most important requirement of an SLT member is to have an honest desire to contribute to the educational experience and learning of all children at Oakhurst Elementary. We hope you will consider being a part of this very important work! Those interested should complete this form along with a short bio to add to our voting form. Thank you for your support!

This year's SLT Dates are: 10/21, 11/18, 1/20, 2/24, and 3/24 with a December training for all of our teams across the district.

If you and your children bike to/from school, please walk your bikes on campus (which begins at the driveways). Also, if you're on a bike, please don't go through the car rider line. Walk your bike to the building to drop off or pick up your child.

Also, PLEASE do not let your children (even younger siblings) run ahead of you at dismissal. Every day, we have a number of unaccompanied children running toward the driveway while we are directing cars into the line. Please use this opportunity to teach your children and their friends about pedestrian safety.

School staff is doing everything possible to keep our community safe, but we need your help!

All of the Universal screening Assessments (STAR Math, Early Literacy, and Reading) have been completed. These computerized adaptive tests help teachers, parents, and administrators improve learning for all students and make informed decisions to promote a child's academic growth.

You will receive a letter, along with the STAR family reports, in your child’s Thursday Communication folder today, August 21, 2025. As a part of the Georgia Early Literacy legislation, we are sharing the Universal Screening results. You will receive a letter communicating whether an academic risk has been identified or not. This allows us to identify needs and plan for the appropriate interventions early. You may find the STAR Family Information helpful as well.

Oakhurst Gifted Program Recommendations

Each fall semester the Gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it in to the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 1. No additional information is needed.

The Gifted & Talented Specialists for Oakhurst are Amanda Lockwood and Courtney Hartnett. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact the Gifted & Talented Specialist for your school at alockwood@csdecatur.net or visit the following website: https://www.csdecatur.net/our-district-5f/departments/teaching-and-learning/gifted-and-talented-services

1st Grade CogAT Testing Starts September 3

From September 3-5, all 1st-grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Unlike traditional achievement tests, which measure how well a student has learned the curriculum, the CogAT assesses a child’s ability to reason abstractly and recognize patterns and relationships in the world around them. Teachers can use CogAT scores to better understand a child’s pattern of cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Our school district also uses CogAT scores to screen for cognitively gifted students.

Room Parent Communication Opt Out

This form will be open through today, Thursday, August 21st.

Oakhurst families, please complete and submit this food insecurity request form if your student is experiencing food insecurity within the home and is in need of some supplemental weekend snacks.

The Decatur Education Foundation supplies Oakhurst with snack bags for any student in need. This request form will go directly to our school counselor, Ms. King, and she will send home a snack bag with your student every Friday. Please go through each week's snack bag to remove any snack you may not want your child to have due to allergy concerns, etc.
