One STEP @ A Time: Preparing Middle School Students For Evidence Based Writing
If you are looking for good evidence based writing strategies look at using the STEP strategy.
CONSISTENCY
Learn & Turn
This set of Learn & Turns are created based on the need for students to practice SCR questions. Please locate the documents in the Schoology group. The document will help walk you through the process of creating an SCR in Writable. Please go over these as a PLC.
Spiraling
WHAT: Spiraling occurs when teachers continue to revisit key ideas throughout the instructional sequence with increasing complexity to reinforce previous learning and make connections to new learning.
WHY: By revisiting TEKS frequently, students gain a deeper understanding of key concepts and can better apply their knowledge to current units and real-world scenarios. Spiraling also improves student retention and understanding, supporting struggling learners by allowing multiple ways to view content and make connections.
HOW: Identify standards to be spiraled using your Progress Check and Benchmark data. Identify when to spiral using the Unit Pacing Calendar, Unit Maps, upcoming Benchmark Blueprints, and the Year-at-a-Glance. Spiraling does not stop or take time from Tier 1 instruction. Rather, it should be intentionally embedded to connect to current unit lessons through warm-ups and whole- and small-group mini lessons.
NOW WHAT? Fortunately because History is linear many of our standards fall into cause/effect and therefore are easy to bring in for spiraling. After collecting formative and summative data, it's important to identify where spiraling for those standards will--or will not--occur. If spiraling of specific or challenging skills does not occur later in upcoming units (or occurs too far in the future), teachers can begin to intentionally embed warm-ups and whole- or small-group instruction that puts previously taught concepts back in the focus of students.

What's Happening This Month:
Post Election 2024
With the 2024 Election just days away you may be thinking about the organic discussions that will of course be taking place all over campuses. The Cornell Center for Teaching Innovation has a few helpful pointers for teachers in navigating those scenarios.
American Indian Heritage Month
American Indian Heritage Month is here and while incorporating content around the diverse histories, traditions and current realities of American Indians is important all throughout the year, this month is time to explicitly ensure these perspectives are at the forefront of our teaching. As educators we can focus on providing students with resources that highlight the cultural diversity of American Indian communities, as well as the resilience and leadership that continue to shape American Indian identities today.

November 11: Veterans Day
November 11th is Veterans Day and it is vital to take time to honor the work and sacrifices of those who serve and have served in the Armed Forces. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has developed a teacher guide that addresses common misconceptions and provides data on America’s Wars and provides insights to the real experiences of Veterans.
November 28: Thanksgiving
Somehow Thanksgiving is already on the horizon and it's a great time to dive into discussions about the holiday’s history, traditions, and cultural significance. Whether you're exploring the origins of Thanksgiving or examining its impact on indigenous populations, there are many valuable resources to enrich your lessons. Check out a few options below.
