Dear Seth Low I.S. 96 School Families,

Although last week was a short one, it was filled with excitement, joy, and meaningful engagement for our students!

On Monday, May 25, 2026, our Seth Low Drumline proudly marched in the Bay Ridge Memorial Day Parade under the direction of Mr. Ethan Hartshorn. This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our Seth Low PRIDE and represent our incredible school community. Thank you to our teacher volunteers, Mr. Bravestein and Mr. Herron, for carrying the Seth Low banner and supporting our amazing students throughout the event.

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, our 7th graders enjoyed an incredible Field Day. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to bond with one another while participating in a variety of sports and physical activities. A special shout-out to our 7th grade team and Assistant Principal Fanas for creating such a fun, well-organized, and memorable experience for our students.

On Thursday, May 28, our 6th graders had a fantastic time on their trip to Dave & Buster’s. It was a well-deserved opportunity for students to celebrate their hard work while building friendships and creating lasting memories together. Thank you to our 6th grade team and Assistant Principal Ramos for organizing such an enjoyable and engaging trip for our students.

On Friday, May 29, we had the pleasure of welcoming bestselling author Lance Rubin to our school. This was an inspiring experience for our students, who not only learned about the writing process but also had the opportunity to participate in improvisation activities and engage in a thoughtful Q&A session. Many students were even able to receive signed copies of his book! Thank you to our outstanding librarian, Ms. Angela Hargrove, for planning this enriching and exciting event for our school community.

Seth Low IS 96 Student Receives Prestigious Martin Safran Award

Congratulations to 7th-grader Qiao Hui Chen, who has been named a recipient of the prestigious Martin Safran Award by the Association of Assistant Principals! Qiao Hui was recognized for her exceptional leadership, empathy, and dedication to her community. To support younger peers, Qiao made the selfless sacrifice of giving up her gym class and preferred elective to serve as a trained Peer Group Connection (PGC) mentor. As a deeply committed Student Council member, she consistently arrives an hour early to advocate for her classmates and collaborate with school leadership. Beyond the classroom, Qiao draws from her own pandemic-era learning challenges to tutor her younger brother and local third-graders. We are incredibly proud of Qiao for turning her personal philosophy of kindness into meaningful, lasting change both inside and outside our school walls!

Visual Art

The Seth Low Visual Art program is focused on developing fundamental art skills while letting students explore their creativity. We work with a variety of mediums including acrylic paint, clay, and watercolor. We also partner with and integrate the arts in various subjects to enhance engagement and motivation.

Musical Theater

In Musical Theater, you’ll learn the fundamentals of performing while building confidence, teamwork, and stage presence.

Each year, students take the stage in our Spring Concert and have the chance to audition for the Spring Musical.

Over three years, you’ll develop your performance skills and get ready to audition for specialized performing arts high schools by the start of eighth grade.

Whether you’re new to the stage or born for the spotlight, this class lets you explore it all—singing, dancing, and acting your heart out!, and acting your heart out!

Chorus

Chorus is a year-long elective where students develop vocal skills and learn the fundamentals of singing in an ensemble setting. Throughout the course, students explore proper vocal technique, breathing, harmony, and sight-reading while gaining a foundation in music theory to support their ability to read and understand written music.

Chorus students perform in the Spring Concert each year and are encouraged to participate in the Spring Musical. As a new addition to our performing arts program, the Chorus class provides students with opportunities to grow as musicians and performers while contributing to the school’s vibrant musical community.

Theater

Our Theater program is off to an incredible start!

In our general classes, we have just wrapped our first unit on ensemble—learning to work together and build a community of trust in order to create bold stories.

Theater Elective students just completed their very first on-camera “screen tests” and are now diving into rehearsals for our upcoming student film, Finding Alice, a filmed adaptation of Alice in Wonderland created by 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Theater Elective students.

We're so proud of the creativity and confidence our students are already showing, and we can’t wait to share their work with you!

Dance

This year the Seth Low dance program is focused on building students' technical dance skills and diving into the dance style of breakdancing!

In addition to learning dance steps and how to find rhythm, our dance program aims to help students build personal development skills. Our Seth Low students are building their confidence and dance moves!

We are excited for our community to see the incredible hard work we are putting in at our upcoming shows!

Band

Our Concert Band and Drumline programs are flourishing at Seth Low! Our Drumline is marching in local parades and community events and this year our Concert Band program is partnering with Jazz House Kids to do some beautiful deep-dives into the world of Jazz music.

Both groups have been visiting local elementary schools to perform and build connections in our district. We are looking forward to some trips with the orchestra students in the winter and to our spring performances coming up later in the year.
