Message from the Principal, Jamie McCarthy

The data from the beginning of the year assessments are in and now we have hit the ground running! Our classrooms are focused, data driven, and fun! We have taken the time at the beginning of the year to build relationships and now we have taken a dive into the standards and making progress.

I can't stress enough the importance of attendance. Making a solid effort to be on time and start a child's routine each and everyday (provided they are healthy) makes an immense difference. In the event your child is absent, please make sure you send in a handwritten note to your child's teacher. We have a focus on attendance this year and will be working diligently with you to ensure that students are in school and learning.

Thank you for being a partner in your child's education. Together we can provide a rewarding experience for every student.

Lambs Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Each week students are learning about traditions of Hispanic Heritage by holding discussions, making, and displaying their work. Our 4th graders will also perform some poems to engage us in learning more about the Hispanic Heritage! We will post pictures on social media!

Papel Picado:

Papel picado ("perforated paper," "pecked paper") is a traditional Mexican decorative craft made by cutting elaborate designs into sheets of tissue paper.

Paper Bag Luminaries:

Luminaries are a traditional decor used in the Hispanic culture. They are typically paper bags (but can be made from other materials as well) that have designs or holes poked through the side, and are lit by putting a candle inside. These are placed in pathways and entrances or are used for decorations at holidays throughout the year.

Sugar Skulls:

Having sugar skulls full of vibrant colors and brightness, makes remembering ancestors a much more pleasant and sweet experience. On the Day of the Dead, according to folklore, it's possible to catch glimpses of our loved ones on earth again – and these skulls act as a representation of that phenomenon.

October Special Areas at Lambs

Library with Ms. Smith

Welcome to the Lambs Library! We have been having such a fun time checking out books since the first day of school this year. I know the books missed you! We are really focusing this year on urging each student to read at least 20 minutes a day and log all their reading in Beanstack to reach the CCSD goal of the 20,000,000 minute reading challenge for the 2023-2024 school year! Ask your student if they have been logging their reading! Also, we are very excited to announce the Fall Book Fair will be taking place from Monday, October 9th through Friday, October 13th which will include PTA night on Thursday, October 12th for parents to shop with their students. Please see our Book Fair Website for lots more information!

Art with Ms. Bowers

Thank you so much to all of the staff and students who participated in Dot Day on September

15th! It was such a blast and I enjoyed seeing all of your dots! For the month of September our Lambs Artists have been working hard on some seasonal artworks in order to prepare for the upcoming art show on October 12th. Fourth and fifth grade artists are working hard on stylized self-portraits in the form of some beloved Halloween movies, and our first, second, and third grade artists have just completed their castles inspired by the Disney artist Mary Blair. Our first grade artists are currently working on some spider web color wheels and our kindergarten artists have been learning about famous artist Yayoi Kusama. To see some of this awesome artwork make sure to keep an eye out while walking in the special area hallway! I hope to see everyone at the art show on October 12th!

PE with Coach Wilber

CD/K--we will be continuing with our movement patterns and practicing self control and understanding personal space while moving, towards the end of the month we will be starting to work on throwing & catching skills, as well doing a Fitness Stations week where we will focus on different fitness components to help our fitness levels.

1st/2nd grades--we started our throwing and catching skills, and will be continuing activities and games to focus on the underhand toss, overhand throw all while using a partner and small groups. At the end of the month we will be doing a Fitness Stations week where we will focus on different fitness components to help our fitness levels.

3-5th--we will be using small warm-up partner workouts (5 minutes or so), and then starting FItnessGram Testing for the upper grades. This is a requirement of the SCDE and CCSD for 5th graders, so I feel it is a great way to expose the 3rd and 4th graders to what they can expect. Upon completion we will be starting throwing and catching games and activities.

Have a great month and thank you for such a positive start to the school year!!

Music with Ms. Martin

October is going to be an exciting month! Fourth graders are preparing to perform at the October 12th PTA meeting. Recorders will be arriving soon for our third graders. We will be performing with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in March with other students from around the county. CD and Kindergarten will begin lessons in instrument pedagogy, solo, and group performance. First and second graders will focus on rhythmic patterns, improvisation, solo, and group performance. Fifth graders will be starting lessons on the ukulele this month.

Join the School Improvement Council

The SIC is comprised of teachers, community members, and parents with the goal of creating a partnership to achieve results that better the education and educational environment provided by their school. At Lambs Elementary we are looking for parents to join our team and someone who is willing to be our chair member. If you are interested, please email Mrs. McCarthy at jamie_mccarthy@charleston.k12.sc.us. We meet approximately 5 times a year.

Attendance Corner

We have an attendance challenge going on every week at Lambs! Each week ribbons get added to the class doors who have top attendance for the week! Ms. Bearden's 4th grade class is the overall winner for September! Congratulations!

Parents, we also need to be mindful of tardies! We know that routines support excellence! Our doors open at 7am and students need to be present by 7:25am!
