DREAMS ARE OUR BUSINESS, DISCIPLINE IS OUR TOOL, EXCELLENCE IS OUR PURSUIT.
I am thrilled to share that NOVA’s ELEVATE campaign is set to fulfill the original vision for the NOVA-Regency Aquatics Center—a vision many of you helped bring to life. Some of you may remember standing on the second floor, gazing down into what was then a vast hole in the Macy’s floor. That space was always intended to be the spectator’s view in a world-class facility, one capable of hosting 2,000 people. Now, with your continued support, that vision is becoming a reality.
What does the ELEVATE capital campaign mean for NOVA?
NOVA can host state, regional, and national events right here at home.
NOVA families will spend less on travel, as the competition comes to us.
We will attract over 60,000 event attendees annually, to Henrico County, doubling our current sports tourism impact.
All nine county high schools will have a permanent home for swimming and hosting local, regional, state and zone championships.
The addition of a 2500 square foot Community Room that will be a multipurpose space that can be used by both NOVA and our community partners to educate and support the mental, physical, and emotional health and well being of our community.
NOVA will have a dedicated strength and conditioning space for our athletes.
The addition of a full service catering kitchen for hosting large events.
At its core, this addition ensures that NOVA can continue its mission to develop swimmers and increase access for underserved populations in our community. Learning to swim is not just a skill; it can save lives, build confidence, and inspire dreams. At NOVA, it can even lead to collegiate, national, international success.
The ELEVATE campaign will also benefit our community partnerships that have been established since opening the NOVA-Regency Aquatic Center. The second-floor addition will allow us to further support and expand these programs, ensuring that “the dreams” we’ve nurtured for 37 years can extend beyond our team to every community member who wishes to learn to swim. Please be on the lookout for ways to support the campaign in the upcoming weeks and thank you for being a part of this mission with us.
Warm regards,
Leigh Peterson

Decades of Dominance
To dominate an opponent, what does that mean? The simple meaning of dominance - control, authority; rule, supreme influence. NOVA has been the definition of dominance in VA swimming for more than 2 decades, but how did we get there and how have we stayed there?
Over the summer break, I was doing what a lot of people probably do when they are bored, I was channel surfing. I came across a one hour show on the SEC network called “Decade of Dominance”, which peaked my interest. The show ultimately took a close look at the 10 winning characteristics of the past SEC and National Championships teams in football from Alabama, Georgia, and LSU. It went in depth about what made these programs special and led them to succeed.
As I began to watch, I quickly realized that NOVA displays many of the 10 characteristics the show was going over. At the next staff meeting we met and talked about the show as a staff and how it related to NOVA. Over the course of the next several weeks, NOVA’s coaching staff will be presenting to you each of these characteristics and how NOVA brings these qualities to the pool.
Stay tuned for the list each week!

ISCA Smith Mountian Lake Open Water 5 K
While the conditions were great for racing, that doesn’t make swimming a 5k any easier. NOVA swimmers attacked each race with vigor, despite it being a first time swimming Open Water for many of the crew. Whether it was just to say they did it, or to race for first place, a fun time and a nice day on the lake was had by all.

Practice Performer of the Week
13 and over PPOW
With a new season comes a lot of turnover in groups, and newer or younger swimmers tend to look to a swimmer who has been in the group for leadership. Daniel Van Epp has stepped up in a big way for Senior Development Bronze, not only showing others how the flow of practice goes, and helping others with abbreviations, but also in leading by example. Daniel pushes himself every day in practice to not only move fast, but to do the little things in his strokes in order to be a better swimmer!
12 & under PPOW
Our first 12 & Under PPOW of the season goes to Noah Wolfle from Age Group Gold. Noah came into the season with a determined attitude and quickly emerged as a leader in the group. He has been consistently working hard to improve some of his weaker areas, like technique in his least favorite stroke and his underwaters. He has also been pushing himself hard on tough sets, and thriving in his new spot on the first interval. Great job and keep it up, Noah!
It's MEET WEEKEND...Here's what you need to know
Where to arrive:
- NOVA- Regency
When to arrive:
- All NOVA swimmers must be on deck at their assigned warm up time and must attend their assigned warm up session to be eligible to swim in the meet session. The warm up times, heat sheets, timelines and general meet information can be found HERE. The heat sheets will not be posted until the Thursday night before the meet begins.
What to wear:
- NOVA Team Suit, RED NOVA Cap, goggles, NOVA Apparel
What to bring:
- extra pair of goggles, extra cap, water bottle, healthy snacks, entertainment - cards, games, drawing materials, etc. Electronics are allowed until they become a problem (ex - swimmer misses their event because they were playing on a device).
Please write on your swimmers hand before warm ups:
- There is no Clerk of Course at NOVA meets. Swimmer will report directly behind the blocks after speaking to their coaches
Swimmer’s Event, Heat, Lane should be written on their arm/ hand in Sharpie before the meet! Heat sheets posted online/ Meet Mobile, it should look like the following:
This is an example only:
E = Event - The event number for each event (race). This can be found on the website where you initially entered your swimmer, the heat sheet, or on meet mobile
H = Heat – Which heat number of each event they are assigned to (found in the heat sheet or on meet mobile)
L = Lane – Which lane assignment for each event they will swim in (found in the heat sheet or on meet mobile)
NOVA Expectations for the Meet:
- Swimmers are expected to come talk to their group's coaches before and after each race so each swimmer will get reminders and race strategy tips. This should be about 15 minutes before they swim so they have time to get behind the blocks. Swimmers should talk to coaches immediately after they swim (BEFORE THEY SEE YOU) so the coaches can give feedback for each race.
Swimmers are NOT ALLOWED IN THE WARM UP / WARM DOWN POOLS during the meet sessions without specific coach permission! No, not even to practice their turns before their race!
If you have any questions or concerns please come to the meeting on Friday 10/4/24 at 4:00 pm in the Regency lobby, or reach out to your swimmer's coach.
