Dear Rose City Park Families,

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for Dr. Armstrong’s listening session. I am grateful that we had the opportunity for Dr. Armstrong to hear your stories, understand our perspectives, and hear about the impact that a potential closure of Rose City Park would have on our students, families, and community. Your voices matter, and I appreciate the honesty, courage, and love for our school that you brought into the conversation. Thank you for continuing to share what makes our school so special.

I also want to acknowledge the heartbreaking news of the shooting in Bend. Moments like these remind us how precious life is and how important it is to hold our loved ones close. As parents and educators, nothing matters more than the safety and well-being of our children.

RCP follows Portland Public Schools (PPS) emergency management protocols, including established procedures for responding to a variety of emergency situations. We also regularly practice safety drills to help students and staff become familiar with what to do in an emergency.

As a reminder, please make sure to sign in at the main office every time you enter the school building and sign out when you leave. This is an important safety measure that helps us keep track of who is in our building and ensures the safety of our students and staff. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our school community safe.

For families who would like to learn more, please visit the following resources:

  • PPS Emergency Management

  • RCP Emergency Response Plan

Tonight, hug your kids a little tighter. Tell them you love them. Listen to their stories, celebrate their little moments, and remind them that they are safe, valued, and deeply loved.

Please remember that Wednesday, October 21, is an early release day for students. Our staff will spend the afternoon engaged in professional learning focused on the Science of Reading. This is an important opportunity for our teachers to deepen their understanding of how children learn to read and strengthen the instructional practices we use in our classrooms. We are committed to continuing to learn and grow as educators so we can become even better teachers for our otters.

In the midst of uncertainty and difficult news, I hope we can continue to find strength in one another and in the community we have built together.

Thank you for being part of our RCP family.

For more important school news and information, please read below.

Thank you again for your continued partnership and support of your student’s learning.

In light of recent news regarding the school shooting in Bend, I want to reach out and remind you that our school community is here for you and your children. While we maintain a comforting, predictable routine at school, children sometimes carry quiet worries or questions after hearing about big events in the news.

To help our young learners feel safe and secure, we have implemented the Sammy and Friends curriculum across all K–1 classrooms. This program teaches emergency preparedness in a gentle, developmentally appropriate, and trauma-informed way—focusing on practical safety habits and self-regulation without causing distress. Additionally, the Sammy and Friends website offers fantastic parent resources that are available to all families, regardless of grade level, to support comforting safety conversations at home.

If you notice your child feeling anxious, having trouble sleeping, or asking tough questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Whether you'd like resources to help navigate these conversations at home or would like me to check in with your student during the school day, I am always here to support your family.

Warmly,

Melissa Toren Hrin
