QACPS Board Report
May 2025 Edition
Writing Awards
The State of Maryland Literacy Association (SoMLA) hosts an annual Young Authors’ Contest. QACPS has two state-level winners of the 2025 SoMLA Young Authors’ Contest.
Matapeake Middle School student Nora Tate (not pictured) took first place in the Grade 6 Short Story Category. Her short story, “The Solace of Night,” shares a poignant tale of learning to live alongside grief and loss.
Audrey Whitehair, a student at Queen Anne’s County High School, captivated judges with her reflective free-verse poem, “Misinterpreted Luck.” The piece’s beautifully composed imagery and thought-provoking sentiments earned her first place in the Grade 11 Poetry category.
Queen Anne’s County High School proudly celebrates William Wyatt Arnold, a 2025 National Scholastic Art and Writing Award Winner. Wyatt received a prestigious National Silver Medal in Flash Fiction for “Shouting Into a Deaf Ear,” a post-apocalyptic tale of one man’s quest to fulfill his lifelong dream of running a radio station. Regionally, Wyatt also earned five Silver Keys and one Gold Key for his outstanding work in flash fiction and short story writing — with his Gold Key submission advancing for national award consideration.
Congratulations Nora, Audrey, and Wyatt!
