Second Grade Career Explorers
The second grade classrooms were buzzing like a newsroom on deadline during this year’s Career Week. Instead of just learning about jobs from books, students met real life professionals, practiced active listening, and sharpened their skills in asking thoughtful, open-ended questions. Tiny reporters in training, they leaned in, made eye contact, and asked things like, “What inspired you to choose your career?” and, “What is the most exciting thing about your job?”
The week kicked off with Uncle Brian Graziano, owner of Graz Fitness and a personal trainer. He turned our classroom into a mini training studio. Students tried different exercises and learned that being strong is not just about muscles but about habits. His life lesson was simple and powerful: “Train, eat, sleep, repeat.” The rhythm of those words echoed like a steady drumbeat for success.
Next, Auntie Chante Galton, owner of Hanabaddah Dayz Bakery, brought the sweet science of baking to life. She showed students how math helps measure ingredients, science explains why cakes rise, reading guides recipes, and art inspires beautiful designs. The highlight was decorating their own cakes, where frosting became paint and sprinkles became confetti. Learning has rarely tasted so delicious.
Excitement soared when Uncle Dustin Harris, Senior Helicopter Pilot for the Hawaii Fire Department, landed his helicopter right at our school! The rotor blades hummed with adventure as students toured the aircraft and listened to thrilling rescue stories. Questions flew as high as the helicopter itself, and students learned how teamwork, courage, and preparation guide every mission.
Uncle Jimmy Covell, flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines, helped students explore the world of aviation. He taught them the different parts of a plane and explained the many careers that keep an airline running smoothly. From pilots to mechanics to customer service agents, students discovered that it takes a whole crew to help people travel safely. He even brought special gifts that made the lesson feel first class.
Auntie Marie Ferguson, a marine scientist, dove into ocean learning with the class. She taught students about reef health, producers and consumers in an ecosystem, and how each living thing plays an important role. Students then built their own candy reefs, creating colorful ecosystems made of sweet treats while learning serious science.
To close the week, students reflected on all they had learned by writing heartfelt thank you letters to each guest speaker. They shared what inspired them, what they learned, and how grateful they felt for the time and care each volunteer gave.
Career Week was more than a series of visits. It was a launchpad for curiosity. Our second graders did not just learn about careers. They practiced listening with intention, asking meaningful questions, and imagining their own futures. The classroom became a gym, a bakery, a runway, a helicopter pad, and a coral reef all in one unforgettable week.
Art Meets Math: "Masks and Shapes"
We were thrilled to welcome back the Artist in the School (AITS) program for its 7th year at our school! This year's focus, "Masks and Shapes," invited 1st and 2nd grade students to dive into the world of symmetry and geometry through mask-making and drama. Mahalo to Bonnie Kim and the AITS program!

The North Shore Fitness Festival: Bonding Through Play! 🏃♂️✨
Haleʻiwa Elementary and Waialua Elementary joined forces for an energetic Fitness Festival! Students in grades 3–6 came together to participate in a variety of fun games and team-building challenges designed to promote healthy, active lifestyles.
Beyond the physical activity, the event was a wonderful opportunity for our two school communities to bond, practice sportsmanship, and build lasting friendships. It was inspiring to see our students cheering each other on and staying active together. Way to go, North Shore scholars!

A Reward to Remember: Grades 3–6 Experiences
Our 3rd through 6th graders recently celebrated their hard work with an afternoon filled with unique, hands-on "Experiences!" The campus was buzzing with activity from the creative energy of friendship bracelet making and custom crafting (pens, keychains, stickers, hats, t-shirts) to the delicious smells of Cooking and Cookie/Smoothie making, there was something for everyone. Some students enjoyed learning to do a Manicure in the library, while others hit the field for a high-energy game of Flag Football. It was a wonderful afternoon of learning new skills and celebrating our students' achievements together!
We also want to give a special shout-out to our support staff for their flexibility and hard work behind the scenes. A huge thank you to Mr. Pai for single-handedly managing the office so that the rest of our team could facilitate these wonderful experiences for our students. We truly have an amazing team!
