Last Week's Photos
English Language Arts
Last week, we got to know each other through various activities. Students presented their All About Me flipbooks! We established expectations and procedures in ELA class. I shared that we will be using our morning class periods for Reading and our afternoon class periods for Writing.
This week, students will complete several Reading and Writing pre-tests. The pre-tests will allow me to get to know your child as a student, as well as expose them to 6th grade ELA content and skills. The pre-tests will cover basic reading comprehension skills, reading terms, writing skills, and grammar. They will be administered throughout the week, so students do not get bored or burnout. Students do not need to study for the pre-tests!! Also, students will set up their ELA binders, participate in a StarBOOKS tasting (shhhhhh!), and a classroom library scavenger hunt.
PLEASE NOTE - During the StarBOOKS tasting, students will be able to choose a snack: Gluten Free Oreos or Pirate’s Booty. If one of these options does not work for your child, please let me know. Lemonade and water will also be served.
Upcoming Assessments
1. Various Reading & Writing Pre-Tests - Week of September 9th
Homework
1. Find an independent reading book - due Monday, September 16th
Religion
Last week, we spent time setting an intention for the year. All students have chosen a focus word for the year. They are hanging up outside our classroom, so please check them out when you visit! Students received their Religion books, which will stay in Room 11. The book will typically only come home before a test or quiz.
This week, students will write about a time or place that makes them feel close to God. This is their first homework assignment of the year. It is on Google Classroom, and it is due on Friday, September 13th. We will review the Liturgical Calendar of the Church this week, with a specific focus on Ordinary Time. Then, students will learn the steps to becoming a saint through a digital activity.
Homework
1. “Closest to God” Slide - due Friday, September 13th
Math
Last week, both classes completed a summer Math assessment. I reviewed the answers to their Simple Solutions, and they recorded answers on an answer sheet. That work and their IXL activities from the summer will be used for their first math grade.
This week, the students will receive their books and new Simple Solutions. They will be joining new Google Classrooms. The codes have been provided above.
Social Studies
Last week, we went over the expectations of the classroom. We also did a few get to know you activities.
Looking ahead, we will be starting our first chapter. This chapter reviews general geography, landforms, and waterways.
I am looking forward to teaching your children this year!
Science
I have really enjoyed getting to know your children this week! They came to science class with great enthusiasm and curiosity. The main focus of our short week was to get to know each other, set expectations for the year, and learn about science lab safety. Many have already gotten their syllabus signed, so thank you for doing that! Everyone will also need to get the safety contract signed. The students are aware that if they do not follow the lab safety rules they will be asked to sit out of science lab the following week.
Please ask your child if they have joined my Google Classroom, and if they have any papers you need to sign.
A successful school year takes a partnership between parents and teachers, so thank you for your support at home!
Please feel free to email me with any questions or if there is anything I need to know about your child. I am very excited for a great year with them!
