Raising Responsible Students: The Power of Letting Them Take Ownership

Dear Franklin Academy Families,

As parents and educators, we all want our children to succeed. We want them to earn good grades, make good decisions, develop meaningful friendships, and become confident, responsible young adults. Naturally, when we see them struggling, our first instinct is often to step in and help. However, one of the most valuable lessons we can teach our children is that success is not just about what others do for them, but about what they learn to do for themselves.

At Franklin Academy, we believe that education goes far beyond academics. Every day, our students have opportunities to develop independence, responsibility, problem-solving skills, and resilience. Whether it is remembering to complete an assignment, preparing for an assessment, managing their time, or resolving a disagreement, these everyday experiences help shape the individuals they will become.

As parents, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the opportunity to take ownership of their actions and decisions. This does not mean stepping away or allowing them to struggle without support. It means guiding them while gradually allowing them to become more responsible for their own success. Instead of immediately contacting a teacher about a missing assignment, for example, consider encouraging your child to speak with the teacher first. If they receive a disappointing grade, help them reflect on what they could do differently rather than focusing only on the result.

Accountability is not about punishment. It is about helping children understand that their choices matter and that they have the ability to influence their own outcomes. When students learn to acknowledge mistakes, ask for help, follow through on commitments, and take responsibility for their learning, they develop confidence that cannot be taught through textbooks alone.

Of course, this process looks different depending on a child's age. A kindergarten student may begin by learning to organize their belongings, while a high school student should increasingly take responsibility for communicating with teachers, monitoring grades, and meeting deadlines. What matters is that we continue encouraging growth and independence at every stage.

As we move through Quarter 2, I invite our Franklin families to consider one simple question: Am I preparing my child to solve problems, or am I solving every problem for them?

Our theme this year is BELIEVE, and believing in our children also means trusting them to learn, grow, make mistakes, and become more independent. With patience, guidance, and consistent expectations at home and at school, we can help them develop the confidence and character they need to succeed.

Thank you for your continued partnership in raising not only successful students, but responsible, resilient, and capable young people.

Together, we BELIEVE in their potential. 💙💛

🌎 Hispanic Heritage Night: A Beautiful Celebration of Our Diversity!🎉 🌎 Hispanic Heritage Night: A Beautiful Celebration of Our Diversity!🎉

What an incredible evening celebrating our cultures, traditions, and the diversity that makes our Franklin Academy family so special! Our Hispanic Heritage Night was a wonderful success, bringing together students, families, staff, and our PTO for a night filled with delicious food, music, dancing, poetry, and unforgettable moments.

Beyond the wonderful performances and celebrations, what made this event truly special was seeing our entire school community come together to share and appreciate the rich traditions that make us who we are. It was a beautiful reminder that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and that the connections we build as a school family extend far beyond the classroom.

A very special thank you to our outstanding ESOL Coordinators, Ms. Marcos and Ms. Rios, for their dedication and hard work in organizing this wonderful celebration. We are also incredibly grateful to our PTO and High School Student Government Association (SGA) for their enthusiasm, contributions, and support in making the evening such a success. Thank you as well to every student, parent, and staff member who participated and helped bring this event to life!

This is what makes Franklin special: different cultures, one community, and a shared sense of belonging. 💙💛

Our Art Club has officially kicked off Quarter 2 with a fun and creative Tape Art project!

Students explored the concepts of positive and negative space by placing paper tape onto their artwork and painting over it with vibrant watercolors. Once the paint dried, they carefully removed the tape to reveal unique designs and striking contrasts!

This hands-on activity encouraged creativity, artistic expression, and an understanding of important elements of art. We can't wait to see what our talented young artists create next! 🎨✨

Uniform Policy Reminder

Dear Franklin Academy Families,

As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, I want to take a moment to remind everyone of the importance of following our school uniform policy. This year, we will be fully enforcing the uniform expectations across all grade levels, and we kindly ask for your partnership in reinforcing these standards at home.

Please take time to speak with your child about the dress code requirements, which are designed to promote a sense of unity, professionalism, and school pride. A student who comes to school properly dressed is better prepared to learn, minimizes distractions, and reflects the values we strive to uphold as a school community.

Below are a few key reminders from our uniform policy:

  • All uniform tops and bottoms must be purchased from our approved uniform vendor, iUniforms, and must include the official school logo.

  • Shirts must be tucked in at all times, with midriffs completely covered—even when arms are raised.

  • Belts (plain black, brown, or navy) are required for students in grades 2–12.

  • Outerwear worn inside the building must have the school logo.

  • Shoes must be closed-toe, safe, and school-appropriate (sneakers, loafers, or Mary Jane style).

  • PE uniforms must also include the school logo and are required on PE days.

  • Hair styles and accessories must not be distracting and are subject to administrative approval.

  • Middle and high school students must wear their school-issued ID badges and lanyards daily.

The full policy is available in our website and by clicking THIS LINK, and we encourage you to review it carefully with your child.

Our goal is not only to ensure that students are dressed for success, but also to cultivate a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment for all. We appreciate your cooperation and support as we work together to uphold these standards.

If you have any questions or need support with uniforms, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our school office.

Let’s make it a great year—

Warm regards,

Sergio Delgado

🚗 Student Pick-Up Reminder: Uber and Rideshare Services 🚗 Student Pick-Up Reminder: Uber and Rideshare Services

The safety of our students is always our highest priority. As a reminder, students under the age of 18 will not be released from school to an Uber, Lyft, or any other rideshare service unless an authorized emergency contact is physically present in the vehicle to receive the student.

This procedure is in place to help ensure that every student is released safely and only to individuals authorized by the parent or guardian. While Uber offers a limited Uber for Teens program in some locations, standard Uber policies do not allow unaccompanied riders under the age of 18, and drivers may refuse or cancel rides if they determine the rider is a minor.

If your child needs an alternate method of transportation, please make arrangements with an approved emergency contact listed in your child's records. That individual must be present to receive the student from school.

We appreciate your understanding and partnership as we work together to maintain a safe and secure dismissal process for every student. Thank you for helping us put student safety first.

To ensure responsible use and proper access to our network, families are required to complete the BYOD agreement. Students must keep a copy of the completed document with them until our IT team sets up their device. Please find the link to the document below and submit it at your earliest convenience.

Student Parking Application 2026-2027

As a reminder, student drivers MUST complete the 2026-2027 Student Parking Application in order to be able to drive on campus.

The parking application requires the signatures of the student, parent or guardian, and vehicle owner. If the parent or guardian is also the vehicle owner, they must sign in both places. We will also need copies of the registration and insurance.

We do not consider an application complete without all the required items. Please submit all required documents to the Director of School Operations, Mr. Carnaggie.

Seniors ONLY you may decorate your parking CURB for FREE! Please see the last page of the 2026-2027 Parking Lot Application for specific information. Please submit your sketch for approval by August 23rd, 2026, our Senior Parking Lot painting will occur on August 30th from 8:00AM-12:00PM.

Reminder: Early Dismissal Policy Reminder: Early Dismissal Policy

Until 1:55 PM

Dear Franklin,

This is a friendly reminder that early dismissal for students is permitted every school day only until 1:55 PM. After this time, we cannot accommodate early sign-outs, as our staff and students are transitioning into dismissal procedures for the day.

We ask that you plan accordingly if your child has an appointment or needs to leave school early. Dismissing students after 1:55 PM creates disruptions to the end-of-day routines and compromises the safety and efficiency of our dismissal process.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and orderly school environment.

No Re-Entry No Re-Entry

Franklin Families,

We want to keep everyone informed, as safety remains our top priority. Recently, we’ve noticed several high school students exiting through the single-point entry or bus loop during dismissal and then attempting to re-enter campus for activities such as practice, committee meetings, tutoring, or Sibling Link.

Please note that once a student exits through the gate, re-entry is not permitted for safety reasons. Any student who opens the gate for others or attempts to re-enter will face disciplinary consequences.

We strongly encourage our high school students to plan ahead each day and be mindful of their schedules to ensure they remain on campus if they have after-school commitments.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and secure campus for everyone.
