DRACULA.....Whimsical Monsters of the Orchid World

Have you ever seen a picture of a flower, online or in-person, that looked like a monkey's face and wondered "what on earth is that?" Well that is none other than one of the most popular orchids within the orchid family. For this month's presentation, we will get to meet an unusual, mystical character of the orchid family: the genus Dracula! Their characteristics, care and origin will be explored by Tom Etheridge as this lecture will be presented from a prerecorded webinar provided by the American Orchid Society.

With over 40 years of orchid-growing experience, Tom Etheridge serves as a judge in the Pacific Northwest Judging Center and brings a specialized, infectious passion for the Dracula genus. This webinar stems from his 25 years of cultivating and studying these often-misunderstood orchids.

Throughout the presentation, Tom covers the essential plant and flower structures of the genus, alongside their unique flowering habits and the history of their discovery and taxonomy. He further explores the natural distribution of these species, highlights the most common ones in cultivation, and discusses the various hybrids currently available in the trade. Tom provides a guide to available literature and shares his best practices for successfully growing these fascinating plants.

Due to not having a guest speaker this month, there will not be a scheduled speaker dinner.

President's Letter President's Letter

Hello everyone,

I hope you’ve been enjoying the beautiful weather lately. I’m writing this at the tail end of the recent heat wave, so hopefully it’s still just as pleasant when you’re reading this.

Last month’s speakers were very well received, followed by a lively and engaging Q&A session. I know I came away with several useful takeaways—one of my favorites being the simple tip of using pencil on plant labels so they won’t fade over time.

I’d also like to extend heartfelt congratulations to Barry and Marcia Hart on being awarded lifetime memberships in recognition of their extraordinary service to the club over the years. Our organization thrives because of dedicated volunteers like them. I encourage everyone to get involved whenever possible—whether by lending a hand at events or sharing your ideas. We truly value your input on future activities, speakers, and topics. Please feel free to reach out to any board member with suggestions. And remember, there’s no limit to the number of board members—we welcome anyone interested! We meet via Zoom on the third Thursday of each month, making it easy to participate from home.

We’re also excited to share that we’ve been invited to visit Mary Nesbit’s greenhouse in Bodega Bay for a picnic on May 16, 2026—be sure to mark your calendars! Mary has been growing orchids since 1987, operating large greenhouses in Bolinas where she offered orchid boarding and hosted popular biannual sales that drew enthusiasts from far and wide. Although she has scaled back in recent years, she continues to maintain a beautiful personal collection in her cool and intermediate greenhouses, which are open by appointment.

DVOS will be hosted in her lovely covered outdoor growing area. Please bring a sun hat and a potluck dish to share as we enjoy this special outing together.

Our next meeting will feature an AOS webinar on Dracula orchids—be sure to check elsewhere in this newsletter for full details.

We hope you’ll join us at our upcoming in-person meeting. Don’t forget to bring your blooming plants (they must have flowered while in your care!) and take the opportunity to see what others are growing. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Warm regards,
Mary Christopherson
President, DVOS
