CITIZENSHIP
This September, our school-wide character trait is Citizenship. Being a good citizen means much more than just understanding how our government works; it is about being a responsible, respectful, and active participant in our shared communities.
We believe that character education is a powerful partnership between school and home. Here is a look at how citizenship translates to different areas of your child's life, along with specific behaviors you can encourage, look for, and celebrate this month:
🏫 Citizenship at School
A good school citizen contributes to a positive, safe, and welcoming learning environment. Look for your child to be:
Following the rules: Respecting playground boundaries, using walking feet in the halls, and following classroom agreements.
Lending a hand: Helping a classmate pick up dropped items or offering to include a new student in a game.
Respecting property: Cleaning up their lunch area, treating library books with care, and taking the initiative to pick up stray trash.
Showing respect: Using manners with teachers, cafeteria staff, bus drivers, and peers.
🏡 Citizenship at Home
Home is a child's very first community. Good citizenship here translates directly to how they treat the outside world. Look for your child to be:
Pitching in: Completing daily chores and helping with household tasks as part of the family team.
Practicing conflict resolution: Respecting siblings by listening to their side of a disagreement and working to resolve conflicts calmly.
Conserving resources: Turning off lights when leaving a room, turning off the tap while brushing teeth, and not wasting food.
Taking ownership: Admitting when they have made a mistake, apologizing, and working to make it right.
🌳 Citizenship in the Community
A strong community citizen understands that their actions impact the people, animals, and environment around them. Look for your child to be:
Respecting shared spaces: Leaving parks, sidewalks, and public areas cleaner than they found them.
Following safety rules: Using crosswalks, obeying traffic signals on their bike, and respecting community signs.
Practicing neighborly kindness: Smiling at neighbors, holding doors open for others, or noticing when someone in the community might need help.
Showing awareness: Asking questions about local events, community helpers, or ways to help those in need (like donating old toys or clothes).
How You Can Help: The most powerful way to teach citizenship is to model it. When you hold a door, pick up litter, or speak kindly to a cashier, your child is watching. Praise your child explicitly when you catch them being a good citizen by naming the trait: "I really appreciate how you helped clean up the living room, that is showing great citizenship at home."
Thank you for partnering with us to raise thoughtful, engaged, and responsible kids!
We encourage our students to live the ACE way which is be Safe, Respectful, and Responsible at school, at home, and in the community.
ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS
Did you know...? Why Daily Attendance Matters:
Missed Lessons = Falling Behind: Even one day can mean missing critical instructions and activities, making it harder for your child to catch up.
Impact on Future Success: Consistent attendance is a strong predictor of academic achievement and future opportunities.
Building Resilience: Regular attendance teaches your child the value of perseverance and responsibility—essential skills for success in life.
Stronger Friendships: Daily presence helps your child develop and sustain friendships, which are crucial for emotional and social development.
Healthy Routine: Attending school every day establishes a stable routine, promoting better mental and physical health.
