MORE Club Program Evaluation
The Men, Organized, Respectful and Educated (MORE) after-school program began at Aiken High School in 2009, offering support and programming to promote academic success, and to encourage positive character development. The program, which focuses on African American male students, includes adult mentorship through club advisors. The evidence-based curriculum provided to club members covers a wide range of topics, including: leadership development, financial literacy, decision making, good citizenship, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, goal setting, college and career readiness, and health and wellness. The program expanded to 44 schools in 2020-21, and served 469 students in grades 3 through 12 that year.
The program evaluation report identified a number of positive outcomes for students participating during the 2020-21 school year, including 100% of seniors graduating. The report notes disruptions caused by the pandemic made it difficult to implement all of the planned program activities. Here are some other key findings:
85.9% of students had no behavioral referrals
40.7% of students had an attendance rate of 90% or greater
24.5% of high school students were enrolled in AA/AP courses
45.4% of high school students had at least 2.5 GPA
MORE clubs continue to contribute to the development of CPS students through exposure to evidence-based curriculum and adult mentorship. More detail on the after-school program, including the results from student and parent surveys, are available in the program evaluation report.
