Cedar Hill Baseball Set To Open 2025 Season on Thursday

Winning 400 high school baseball games isn’t an feat.

Cedar Hill head baseball coach Travis Collins accomplished that milestone in the 2024 regular season finale with a victory over playoff-bound, Mansfield Lake Ridge.

If the International Travis Hall of Fame ever opens on the shores of Lake Travis, Texas, he’ll take his rightful place among the likes of Fryman Kelce, Scott and Tritt.

But now, he’s focused on the task at hand – leading the CHHS Baseball Team to its first playoff appearance since 2019 – when the Longhorns won the district championship.

“This team is more talented,” said Collins, who was an assistant coach for the 2019 team. “That team competed so well, and nothing ever fazed them. We have a chance to have a really good season. These kids have been on the team for anywhere from 2 to 4 years.”

The 2025 Longhorns, who open the season on Thursday in the Everman Tournament, return 11 seniors, including six college signees – the most in program history. They also bring back seven of the nine batters in the starting lineup.

The pitching rotation is made up of Monte Dismuke (McLennan College signee), Julian Gonzalez (Grayson College) and Reggie Samuel (Prairie View A&M).

Fellow seniors Myles Hawkins (Miles College), Denver Gillin (Eastern Oklahoma) and Henderson Brenner (Regent University) have also committed to colleges.

The key for the Longhorns will be consistency. Last season, they defeated playoff-bound district opponents Lake Ridge, Mansfield Legacy and Waxahachie. But they split with DeSoto and Dallas Skyline and were swept by Duncanville.

“We know we can play with anybody -- will we have our focus?” Collins said. “We have to play every team like they’re the best team.”

The three Mansfield schools are no longer in District 6A-11, with Lancaster, Mesquite and Mesquite Horn filling those spots.

The Longhorns will play each of their district opponents in a home & home series once per week for seven weeks, starting with Dallas Skyline March 11 (in Dallas) and March 14 (in Cedar Hill).

“The best teams usually end up in the playoffs that way,” said Collins, a former Tarleton State baseball player who’s in his 32nd season of coaching.
