Celebrating Our Community’s Diversity Celebrating Our Community’s Diversity

The cities of Fairfield and Suisun City are two of the most diverse communities in California. To honor that diversity, each week FSUSD will be sharing information about the cultures that make up our extra special learning community.

Yom Kippur (October 11 - 12) is the holiest day of the Jewish year. Known as the Day of Atonement, the Jewish holiday is spent in prayer and fasting among many people of the Jewish faith. The holiday begins at sundown and lasts until sundown the following day.

Celebrated on the 12th, one of the most important Hindu festivals in October is Dussehra, with its roots deep in Hindu mythology. The festivities around India pay tribute to the Hindu God Rama, and his victory over the Demon King Ravana. Apart from the usual food and fun, there are also several traditions! These include burning a tall dummy of the demon king, lighting baked clay lamps and releasing crackers everywhere.
