The Cannon Connection
2025-2026 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
August 10-16, 2025
Good morning Cannon families,
What an AMAZING week! Thanks to our FABULOUS PTA, we started the week with an excellent breakfast to nourish us through Professional Development meetings. We ended the week reconnecting and skating with our Cannon families. What a BLAST! We had an AMAZING turnout for our Cannon Meet the Teacher Night and Back to School Bash! What a FUN way to kick off another STEMtastic year at Cannon! We LOVED skating with you, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, August 13, at 7:20 am to welcome you on our first day of school.
We will welcome all Cannon Cubs Back to School on Wednesday, August 13, for our first day of school! The alarm clock will come quickly - prepare for the adjustment! Remember, the start time for GCISD elementary schools is 7:35. Doors will open at 7:20, with breakfast available until 7:35. Cubs are tardy after 7:35.
Any parent or guardian wanting to walk their Cub in on the first day of school must have their Driver's License on hand and sign in to the security kiosks before entering the building. Please plan ahead - checking in on the first day will take time! You are welcome to stop by between 8:00 and 3:00 on Monday, August 11, or Tuesday, August 12, to print your badge for quick entry! Per our amazing safety procedures, we will be checking badges and Driver's licenses, so be ready 😊!
It's always hard to drop off your Cub on the first day of school! Kindergarten through fifth-grade guardians walking their child in on the first day are welcome to join our PTA community in our Cannon Cafe for coffee and donuts. Let's connect and celebrate our Cubs' return to school! During this time, our Cubs will be in their classrooms learning back-to-school routines and procedures.
Please remember to send your Cub in comfortable clothes and sneakers for their busy school days! Water bottles and nut-free snacks are also a must to make each day successful! As a reminder, we need to reestablish our campus expectations; Skyward-approved Lunch visitors will begin on Tuesday, September 2.
Let's celebrate the BEST first day of school ever with ICE CREAM! On Wednesday, August 13, join us at Beth Marie's Old Fashioned Ice Cream in Downtown Grapevine, located at 419 South Main Street, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Be sure to say you're there to celebrate with Cannon!
We look forward to partnering with you to make the 2025-2026 a STEMtastic school year!
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Tina Garrett

Please make sure to read all the information below for a smooth and safe transition back.
Our number one priority is school safety; We expect our Cannon families to follow all procedures below. Please note that we will be dismissing our car line scholars from inside this year rather than bringing them outside to sit in the heat.
School Safety ~ Standard Response Protocols
In GCISD, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priority. We have partnered with the I Love You Guys Foundation to implement Standard Response Protocols, or as we called them, Ss, that are used in emergency situations.
Emergency personnel in Colleyville, Euless and Grapevine work in partnership with GCISD to ensure we keep all students and staff safe. In this video, members of these emergency services and GCISD staff help explain each SRP and its function in keeping students and staff safe. Learn more about GCISD's Security and Emergency Management by clicking here.
Each campus conducts drills throughout the school year. These drills are based on the Standard Response Protocols of Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, and Hold. GCISD developed one additional protocol known as Clear.
Completion of the drills is mandatory for each campus during the first two weeks of school, so that students and staff are prepared. Drills help us learn and know how to respond in the case of a real emergency at school. Our drills also help us to check certain equipment and responses. Our emergency management leaders on each campus will work with students and staff to complete our drills and document the results.
Your child's classroom has a SRP Poster displayed. We will be discussing these and practicing these drills the next two weeks of school. More information about Safety and Security in GCISD can be found at https://www.gcisd.net/page/security-emergency-mgmt
When any visitor comes to campus, he or she will need to bring and present their driver's license to be scanned in our system in order to be admitted onto the campus. Also, our door to the office will be locked, and Mrs. Esparza or Mrs. Cox will be conducting a visual check before unlocking the door.

New State Law Prohibits Student Use of Personal Communication Devices During School Day
House Bill 1481 was passed by state lawmakers during the 89th Legislative session prohibiting students across Texas from using personal communication devices during the school day. At the July 28, 2025, regular meeting, GCISD updated its existing policy to be in compliance with the new law.
All students must now store their devices during the instructional day, which begins at the beginning of the first instructional period of the day and ends at the end of the last instructional period of the day. Electronic devices provided to a student by a school district are permitted.
In GCISD, students will be allowed to wear a personal smartwatch only for the purposes of checking time. If a student is found using a smartwatch to send or receive messages, make calls, or otherwise communicate, the device will be confiscated and treated the same as other personal communication devices. Devices will also be allowed for students who need them as part of their individualized education program, a 504 plan, or a similar program or plan.
Click here to view answers to frequently asked questions.
This marks a change from GCISD’s policy adopted in 2024, which allowed flexibility for middle and high school students to use their devices during specific times of the school day. This is no longer permitted due to the requirements of the new state law.

Volunteers and Visitors
We welcome our parents to engage in our events throughout this school year! Any parent attending or supporting an event during the school day must have a cleared background check. That includes field trips, holiday parties, field day, and volunteering on campus during the school day!
Background checks must be completed each year! Click here to learn more: GCISD Volunteer Page
