Celebrating GiftedApril 2026

Welcome to April, GT Families!

Spring is officially in full swing, and April brings a wealth of opportunities to celebrate the unique talents and dedication of our gifted learners. This month is particularly special as we observe G/T Awareness Week across Texas, highlighting the importance of specialized education and support for our students.

From our upcoming District GT Showcase to informative parent webinars and community events like ChalkFest, there are many ways to engage with the GT community this month. We are also in the final stages of the GT Learning Plan process, where students reflect on their growth and set their sights on future goals.

We are so proud of the remarkable achievements our students continue to make, and we thank you for your ongoing partnership in their educational journey.

Warm regards,

The FBISD GT Department

G/T Awareness Week takes place the first full week of April every year and highlights the importance of gifted education across Texas. The week encourages educators and advocates to celebrate gifted learners, strengthen understanding of advanced learning needs, and elevate the impact of strong gifted programs. The statewide recognition was established through the passage of HCR 64 (Curry and Parker), a resolution championed by TAGT that designated the first full week of April as G/T Awareness Week in Texas for 10 years.

GT students are working to complete their GT Learning Plan goals. April is the final phase of the GT Learning Plan goal achievement process. During this final phase, students are completing their goals and evaluating their efforts to determine what changes, if any, should be made when setting goals for next school year and beyond. Final conferences to review the GT Learning Plan will take place in late April and early May.

GT Academy Happenings 🟠 GT Academy Happenings 🟠

The month of March was an exciting time in the Gifted and Talented Academy at Quail Valley Middle School. On March 9th, GTA7 students hosted over 300 fifth graders from Anne Sullivan Elementary, Austin Parkway Elementary, Lantern Lane Elementary, Lexington Creek Elementary, and Palmer Elementary at the annual Be the Change Expo. After reading and annotating a book based on a real-world problem or issue of social injustice and researching that issue using scholarly databases, GTA7 students taught their younger counterpartsβ€”via interactive and engaging exhibitsβ€”how they can β€œbe the change” in face of these problems. It was an inspiring day for allβ€”both the GTA7 student experts/presenters and their curious elementary school participants.

Later that same week, GTA7 students hit the road for their annual overnight trip aptly titled β€œTexas Journeys.” Staying overnight in San Antonio, students visited and toured the San Jose Mission, practiced Spanish and shopped at the Historic Market Square (El Mercado), road the GoRio! Riverboats, and explored the Alamo. On their way back to Houston, they also spent time at the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment, riding glass bottom boats, identifying various living creatures in water samples from Crystal Lake, studying how pollution impacts a live environment, and much more. Additionally, the trip included 3 incredible β€œrefueling” stops at Bucee’s!

On March 24th, GTA6 students presented their finalized Imagine the Change TPSP advanced products in a day long on-campus field experience, sharing what they learned from this year-long endeavor. Students performed fantastically well as they examined and talked about what they learned from the struggles and successes on this project. All attendees left inspired by the spirit of hope and possibility demonstrated in over 185 projects focused on imagining and, in many cases, taking action to realize how they might change the world for the better.

All the while this was going on, the GTA was simultaneously validating over 300 applications for students aspiring to attend the GTA next year as incoming 6th graders. Currently, the application process is live and ongoing with well over 100 students already committed to coming to the GTA next school year and the remaining candidates eagerly awaiting the opportunity to commit to attending the GTA.
