Mentor Minute
September 2026
The Mentor Minute is back for another school year! Each month, we'll highlight timely ideas from the Mentoring Scope and Sequence, practical strategies mentors can use right away, important dates and opportunities, and the great work happening across our schools.
Mentor Coordinators, you're receiving this first edition before we finalize our mentor distribution list. Please share it with your assigned mentors, so they have these resources to support their September conversations. Beginning with future editions, we will also share Mentor Minute directly with mentors.
In this edition:
- Focus: Start with What They Need Most
- Strategies to Try
- What's Happening this Month
- Monthly Mentor Spotlight
🔍This Month's Focus: Start with What They Need Most🔎
September hits fast.
The excitement of opening school meets the day-to-day reality of teaching: students need things, lessons need planning, routines don't always work as they did on paper, emails keep arriving, and tomorrow comes remarkably quickly.
Your mentee may have a dozen things they could work on. That doesn't mean they need to work on all twelve.
This is where a mentor can make a tremendous difference.
As mentors begin meeting regularly with their mentees, one reminder is especially important: the Scope and Sequence is a guide, not a checklist. It can help mentors anticipate what a new educator might need, while conversations and observations help determine what's most helpful right now.
The September Mentoring Scope and Sequence points to several areas where new educators may need support, including:
- establishing and refining routines, procedures, and behavior management;
- navigating planning, pacing, assessment, and instructional expectations;
- communicating with families and learning school processes; and
- managing the emotional demands of the first weeks of teaching.
Your job isn't to cover the list. It's to help your mentee figure out what matters most right now.
Listen for what is taking the most time or energy. Notice what they keep coming back to in conversation. Ask what is feeling easier—and what still feels hard.
Then narrow the focus.
One well-timed conversation, practical resource, connection, or small adjustment may be more helpful than trying to solve everything at once.

🎯Strategies to Try🎯
The September Scope and Sequence can help you anticipate where your mentee may need support. The Four Pillars—Guide, Share, Reflect, and Connect—help you decide how to respond.
1. What’s Taking the Most Energy?
Reflect + Guide
Start by asking, "What's taking the most energy from you right now?"
Listen for what's underneath their answer. Is it a routine that isn't working? Planning that feels overwhelming? A student concern? Family communication? Something else?
Then ask, "What would make that feel a little more manageable?"
Reflect by giving your mentee space to think through what they are experiencing. Guide by helping them identify a practical next step without trying to solve everything at once.
2. Notice → Name → Narrow
Guide + Share + Connect
When several needs surface at once, help your mentee focus on what would make the greatest difference right now.
- NOTICE: What are you hearing or observing?
- NAME: Help your mentee name which need seems most important right now or which need might make the greatest difference now.
- NARROW: What is one manageable next step?
- Guide: Help them think through a practical approach they could try.
- Share: Offer a resource, example, or something you've learned from experience.
- Connect: Help them identify someone or something that can provide additional support.
For example:
“It sounds like transitions are taking a lot of your energy right now. I have a routine that worked well for me. Want to take a look at it together and see what might work for your students?”
That is Share in service of an identified need—not sharing simply because the resource exists.
The Scope and Sequence helps you anticipate what they may need. The Four Pillars help you respond to what they actually need.
