Message from Nicole Pease, Principal
Happy Friday all, I hope you have had a wonderful week!
We had such fun at the play, Finding Nemo Junior at ConVal today! Our students were so well behaved!
Please remember that we are outside at arrival for a few more weeks, and we do go out for recess each day unless there is inclement weather. It is so important to have students dressed for this, please help us and them by ensuring your student has proper outdoor gear each day, thank you!
This week students wrote to local Veterans in honor of Veterans Day. It is so sweet to see how thoughtful and careful the students are in writing these letters. Thank you to all our family members that have served, we appreciate you!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Nicole
Kind Kindergarten and First Grade
Kindergarteners and first graders learned what a veteran is and why we celebrate Veterans Day. Each child made a special card thanking a Dublin veteran for their service to our country. It's always exciting for the kids to see if their veteran writes back!
First graders have been learning about equivalent expressions in math- for example,
1+8 = 5+4. They're practicing using the words "is the same as" when they see an equal sign as well as using the vocabulary words expression (no equals sign- 3+2) and equation (has an equals sign - 3+2=5). Math facts are becoming more and more fluent all the time!
Sweet Second Grade
The students have been working hard to write letters to show our appreciation for local veterans. Each student has also been interviewing a veteran in their own family. We have posted our interview sheets and pictures on our hallway bulletin board. We sure are thankful and proud of those we know who have served our country. Stop by and take a look!
TerrificThird Grade
The terrific Third Graders had fun last week celebrating Halloween with the parade, a fun art activity with their Reading Buddies, and sewing their own monsters.
With the Zones of Regulation Curriculum, we thought about how someone can fluctuate between different Zones in one day and how to handle these feelings. The children are also reviewing/learning about ways to handle and regulate themselves in the different Zones if needed, thinking about triggers that make them feel worried, upset, or frustrated
For Language Arts, during UFLI, phonics/spelling/reading practice, the focus has been on vowel families. The class started “Book Talks” this week. When a child finishes a book, they sign up to share this book with the class. This activity builds excitement in the class for different books for others to possibly read and develops presentation skills for the sharer. The children enjoyed writing a letter of appreciation to a local veteran.
For Math, The class focused on Area, thinking about the area of a rectangle and how it relates to multiplication. The children are learning to become active and engaged learners in their math community through asking questions, appropriately responding, and listening to their peers.
For Social Studies, the children enjoyed creating their maps of DCS, thinking about the direction and placement of the different areas of the school. Questions were created and then asked to Mrs. Pease about DCS. With these questions and answers, the children wrote informative paragraphs for their Dublin books.
The class started their Science Unit on Heredity, Survival, and Selection with a Mystery Science lesson with the essential question - “How do you make the biggest fruit in the world?”
Fun Fourth and Fifth Grade
In Science with the support of the Harris Center, we used maps and play dough to exploring contor maps. We used models and natural resources on the playground to explore erosion. This activity allowed the students to see how various natural materials are effected by moving water.
In math we are combining our knowledge of money and percentages to use coins to determine the percentage of a dollar spend and the change from a dollar. We also continue to work on multiplication and division of large numbers and with decimals.
We wrote and decorated letters to express our thanks to Veterans.
In Social Studies, we are creating journals to record our knowledge of the Abenacki tribes.
Information from the School Board
ConVal Community,
There are multiple ways to run a project the size and importance of Consolidation/Reconfiguration.
The typical way is to lay out all activities, assign responsibilities and target dates up-front. Another way is more iterative (assigning target dates and responsibilities as the project moves along). For many reasons, we (Prismatic and Conval) decided in the beginning of this project to use the iterative approach. These two approaches have the same goals and objectives and will accomplish the same end.
It is now time to lay-out the activities done, in-progress and to be done with the assigned delivery dates. The best venue for this is the bi-weekly school board meeting. It is open to the public, supports on-line viewing and there is no practical limit to the number of on-line attendees. Of course you can also attend in person if you so choose.
During this meeting we will be presenting the activities that have already taken place, the ones in progress and the upcoming ones with dates. At a higher level we will be presenting the goals of the project, its phases and schedule.
Please take the time to attend either in person at the SAU Board room or on-line. The logistics are as follows: Date November 7, time 7:00 PM on line access address
https://www.youtube.com/@ConValEvents , select "2023 November School board meeting" and you will be on-line. If you plan on attending in-person just show up and grab a seat.
To note: this is a recorded meeting so if you can;'t attend at the scheduled time or date you can click on the above on-line access address at any time subsequent to the live meeting that is convenient for you.
Remember this is an official school board meeting so there is no discussion between the board and public either in-house or on-line.
We are, as always, open and transparent and sincerely want community involvement. Be involved.

DCS collects aluminum can tabs for "Tabs for Taylor"
Taylor is 15 years old and has been a patient at Shriners Hospital since birth. She has benefitted greatly by receiving prosthetics and her family gives back by collecting can tabs. The can tabs go to purchasing items for patient care. Taylor is the niece of Sarah Precourt (Mrs. Hopkin's daughter).
DCS has been collecting tabs for years and countless students and their families have contributed to this effort. Please send in any tabs from aliminum cans and we will add them to the collection. Thank you!
