📢The Scoop from the Sup'📢

Decades of Planning for the Future

Previous and current school boards have consistently planned for the students of the school district and continued support of community organizations. Their planning and efforts can be seen across the district. In recent years the school board is reviewing or has moved opportunities forward benefiting both students and communities beyond the walls of our buildings.

  • Support for Bear Butte Creek Historical Society excavation SBHS property
  • Long term lease with 4-H and county fair for use and facility placement at SBHS
  • Sale of property to South Dakota National Guard for future needs east of SBHS
  • Long term lease with Sturgis High School Rodeo Club for new rodeo grounds east of SBHS
  • Discussions with City of Summerset Recreation Committee about future needs and options near Stagebarn Middle School.
  • Continued collaboration and support of youth activities across communities within the district

The Meade School Board has a strong history of partnering and looking towards future needs and is actively working on two key areas to guide the district's future.

2023 Demographic and Facility Study

The board is using the findings from the 2023 Demographic and Facility Study to address our district’s evolving building needs. Current priorities include:

  1. Purchase of Land Adjacent to Sturgis Elementary – To support future growth and development. The Sturgis City Council tabled the sale of 9.5 acres of the old fairgrounds until January to gather community input and review options for the future.
  2. Renovate and/or Expand Sturgis Brown High School - Focused on additional space for Career and Technical Education (CTE), Special Education, expand the Academy, and other critical programs. The Buildings and Grounds Committee is reviewing options of a CTE addition, CTE programming, and how this may improve spaced needs for other programming.
  3. Additional Considerations – Facility updates and recommendations outlined in the study's summary sections. The Buildings and Grounds Committee meets monthly to review short term and five year plans to meet the needs of facilities across the district.

I encourage you to read the full study linked for your review.

Strategic Planning Process

The school board is preparing to launch a strategic planning process after January 1 to shape the district’s direction over the next five years and beyond. This effort will involve gathering input from community members, parents, and staff to help set meaningful goals for our schools.

We look forward to working together to meet the needs of our students and ensuring our district is well prepared for the future. If you have questions please feel free to contact me.

Best regards,

Wayne Wormstadt

FERPA Requirements

Beginning with the 2024-25 school year, the SD DOE requires all districts to obtain parental consent stating the district can or can not share student directory information with SD BOR/SD Tech Colleges and other state agencies required for grades 7–12 in compliance with SDCL 13-28-50.

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to submit the opt-out, and it is the responsibility of the district to properly enter the parent's request in Infinite Campus. If the following questions are not answered it will be assumed "Yes".

Please scan the QR code and answer the three questions so that we can properly update our records.

Are you a parent that is a member of the Armed Forces on active duty? “Armed Forces” means the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. This also includes full-time members of the National Guard Reserve. Students whose parent(s) are in the National Guard and who have been ACTIVATED and DEPLOYED are to be considered a Student of Active Military Parent.

This information is to be collected at the beginning of every school year during the enrollment process, and entered into our student information system, Infinite Campus.

Kindly inform your building secretary if you are an Active Military Parent of a Meade School District student, so we can ensure accurate records within Infinite Campus and our School Liaison Program Manager at Ellsworth AFB.

Sturgis Kiwanis Club

The Sturgis Kiwanis Club is proud to sponsor a series of special breakfast events at various Sturgis schools as part of their ongoing commitment to supporting local youth and fostering a sense of community. The initiative kicked off on October 12 at Sturgis Elementary, followed by a breakfast at Sturgis Williams Middle School on October 18, and will conclude the fall round at Sturgis Brown High School on October 25.

At each event, members of the Kiwanis Club arrive early to greet students as they enjoy breakfast together, sharing conversations and encouragement to help start the day on a positive note. In addition to their participation, the Kiwanis Club generously covers the cost of breakfast for all students, ensuring that every child can participate.

This series is part of the Kiwanis Club's broader mission to invest in the well-being of young people in the community, promoting both healthy living and community engagement. They are already planning a second round of breakfasts at the same three schools in the spring, continuing their tradition of outreach and support for Sturgis students.

The Kiwanis Club’s involvement goes beyond financial sponsorship—it’s about building relationships, fostering a sense of belonging, and demonstrating the importance of community care in the lives of children and adolescents.

Help us maintain our Title I Funding by filling out reduced meal applications!

All Meade School District middle and high school student technology fee's ($25/student or $50/family) will be waived if families complete the Free and Reduced Meal Application, regardless of whether you qualify for the program or not. Unfortunately, the number of applications has dropped since COVID-19 and this puts our Title I funding at risk for our district.

By having more families complete the application, the district can demonstrate a higher level of need to secure and maintain Title I federal funding.

The information provided on the application is confidential, and staff will not have access to the specific details of your application.

Help out your district and fill those applications out now PRIOR to Open House!
