Hello Shorewood Families and Friends,

Many thank yous to the PTO for organizing such lovely food for our staff last night and today for conferences! It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. We also were able to have quite a few dots added to our new world map of "Shorewood family hometowns" near the library. I have shared many times that our diversity is so special but to see all of the little dots spread over every corner of the world is really inspiring. If you didn't get a chance to check it out during conferences, we will have dots available at International Week Global Village and Food Fair, as well!

Science Night was a huge success! There was an incredible amount of work that went into making it a great event and much of that work was led by Yaewon Kang. We could not be more thankful for the countless hours she put into the event. Thank you Yaewon! We also appreciate all of the attendees, who came and checked out the hard work everyone put into their projects and to learn more about science.

We were so excited to welcome Dr. Thevamaran to Shorewood last month. Dr. Thevamaran's research at the UW Department of Engineering focuses on advancing our fundamental knowledge of process-structure-property-function relations in structured materials, specifically through nanotechnology. He presented to our Future Problem Solving team who were conducting investigations into:

What advances for society could new nanotechnology products enable?

How might nanotechnology benefit all sectors of society?

As nanotechnology becomes more commonplace, how can we prepare for potential risks associated with its use?

We are grateful to Dr. Thevamaran for sharing his expertise with our students!

Peace Project Peace Project

Mr. Wong's class recently completed a very special Peace Project which is now on display in the case by the library and near Mr. Wong's 5th grade classroom. The work the students created is truly amazing! Please stop by to take a look.

The project is a continuation of a message of peace which was started by a former Shorewood student 30 years ago, Lissie, aunt to two current Shorewood students.

The project introduction reads:

Peace is the biggest issue of our time. At our school we learn about peace. This project is a bit different in that we are trying to take a look at the issue as a whole-that is, with some of the layers from the personal to the gobal level. We want to define goals of action toward peace-small and big. We want to think about what we want to learn more about and what changes are needed for the world we are growing up into. Some of what were are trying to consider is how people can work together more, as that is certainly what is necessary. There is so much to be done, if we make peace a priority.

We are so grateful to Lissie and her vision for peace that started many years ago here at Shorewood, her family, and Mr. Wong and his students.

Preparing For and Responding to Measles Preparing For and Responding to Measles

zoom_out_map

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services shared some reminders and guidance regarding the management of measles since we are seeing increased cases across the country.

Measles can spread quickly in a school setting and can cause serious illness. Students and staff that have not been vaccinated are at high risk for severe disease, especially students 5 years of age and younger, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems.

For prevention of measles, two doses of MMR vaccine are recommended routinely for children, with the first dose at age 12 through 15 months and the second dose at ages 4 through 6 years (school entry). In general, adults should have one dose of MMR. Two doses of MMR vaccine are recommended for adults at high risk for measles, including international travelers, students at post-high school education institutions, and healthcare personnel.

How to be prepared

  • Students must be vaccinated with the MMR vaccine or have an exemption on file. The Wisconsin student immunization requirements can be waived for medical/health reasons, religious, or personal conviction.
  • Be aware that unvaccinated children and unvaccinated staff may need to stay home for up to 21 days each time they are near someone who has measles.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of measles.
  • Measles or suspecting someone of having measles should be reported immediately to your local health department.

Why local health departments need this information

  • Measles spreads easily and rapidly, and can result in severe disease, it is a serious health threat and is an immediately reportable disease in Wisconsin.
  • Local public health staff investigate all suspected cases of measles, including identifying any contacts of a measles case that are at risk of developing measles and determining necessary control measures.
  • Schools and childcare settings are required to report under the communicable disease reporting rules found in Chapter DHS 144.07.
  • The law requires reporting of both cases and suspected cases, and anyone who had contact with a person who had measles would be a suspect case and need to be followed by the local health department.
  • It is important that public health gets information as soon as possible in order to notify families of the exposure, let families know what they should do if they were not vaccinated at the time of exposure, and let families know how they can contact their local public health department and seek care if they develop symptoms.
