PRINCIPAL CORNER
EIGHTH WEEK OF SCHOOL
Dear OSES Families,
We hope your family has recovered from the effects of hurricane Ian. We have not received an update regarding a plan to makeup the missed days.
The first quarter ended Thursday, October 7th for students. I believe staff, students, and families have settled into the school’s structure. We had a good first quarter and expect a great second quarter. Please continue to support your student and our staff, even when conflict arises. We are a team.
There a lot of events planned for the second quarter. We hope you can join us for at least a few.
Gratefully,
Mr. Singleton

SKYWARD HEALTH FORM ACCESS
IMPORTANT!!
PARENTAL CONSENT FOR HEALTH CARE SERVICES 2022-2023
A new Florida State Statute (Section 1014.06, Florida Statutes: Parental Consent for Health Care Services) has been released requiring parental consent for Health Services given to your child attending any Orange County Public School. Health Services include a range of items including but not limited to Basic First Aid (band-aids and ice), Hearing/Vison Screenings, and certain therapies. As a Charter School within OCPS, we fall within this requirement.
Please access your Skyward Parent Access and complete the 2023 PCF form for each child attending Orlando Science Charter as soon as possible. At this time any unsubmitted form defaults all answers to NO and Orlando Science is not able to provide students any of the listed Health Services.
Step-by-Step Instructions with pictures:
If you are using a mobile device: After logging in to Parent Access, you will see an icon with three lines at the top right of your page. Upon clicking, use the “Go To Desktop View” link. Once in Desktop View, you will see a plus sign on the left side of your screen. Click that plus sign then click Online Forms. Proceed as instructed above.
If you are unable to access Skyward Parent Access, or are only able to see some of your children’s accounts, please complete the following link so that we may get you access as soon as possible: Skyward Parent Access Issues. Thank you for your patience as we correct any Skyward errors.
SPIRIT SHIRTS
TESTING CORNER
THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
This week Mrs. Rouis’ class observed fish in science. Students created mini aquariums that they were able to use to help with their observations. In reading we were busy breaking apart syllables and blending sounds to spell CVC words using our wooden letter tiles. We also had a new creature join our classroom. Our class named him Blueberry. He came all the way from Australia to keep an eye on our class to make sure we continue to make smart choices and follow all the class/school rules. In math we are continuing practicing numbers 6-10.
Please make sure we are sending water bottles labeled with our students name especially on days we have PE as it is very hot outside. Make sure all lunch boxes and school jackets are also labeled with your students name.
FIRST
We have been learning about counting from 1 to 120. We used the counters and cubes to make 120. They were grouped into 3 groups through a cooperative learning style and shared ideas on how to make 120 in the fastest way. I let them report and present to the class their techniques and ways to be able to count easily.
SECOND
This week we furthered our investigation of physical and chemical changes of matter. In this exploration, we turned a liquid into a solid by churning our own butter! It took a lot of teamwork but we’re able to see the cream change from heavy cream, to whipped cream, into butter and buttermilk.
We also got to see the exciting SpaceX launch on Wednesday! We counted down as a group and watched as the rocket soared through the atmosphere into outer space.
THIRD
We have been learning about the different ways we can measure matter. We used a balance scale to compare the different masses of objects. We used a graduated cylinder to find the volume of solids and liquids. We also took a gallery walk around the classroom to explore temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius.
FOURTH
Mr. Mateer’s fourth grade class is diving into decimals! To make sure we have a strong foundation, there’s just nothing better than manipulatives. Mr. Mateer’s class used thousands cubes, hundreds flats, tens rods, and ones cubes to model a whole and decimals to the thousandths place. In addition, they had a chance to share their Changes of State science project with each other by doing a gallery walk!
FIFTH
Mrs. Young’s students have been learning about narrative writing and different types of genres. The class got the opportunity to begin writing their own story and they have been all in!
In science, Mrs. Saucedo's class reviewed content related to properties of matter. Students used different tools to find the mass, temperature, and volume of different materials. We learned how mixtures of solids can be separated, we investigated what materials dissolve in water and what conditions will speed up or slow down the dissolving process.
SIXTH
PE: Are you an ice hockey player? You might win to lead the Orlando Solar Bears on to the ice! Good luck!
