Kim Samuelsen

Kim Samuelsen knew from a young age that she wanted to be a teacher, and her decision to enter special education was shaped by a personal experience visiting her uncle with Down syndrome in Norway. Seeing the care and support he received inspired her to pursue the field.

She most enjoys building strong relationships with students and families and celebrating student progress over time. She values getting to know each student’s interests and supporting their individual growth.

Kim appreciates CAS for its inclusive culture and open-door philosophy, where students are welcomed into many classroom environments. She also addresses misconceptions about ABA, explaining that modern ABA is evidence-based, individualized, and aligned with instructional practices already used in general education. Her students are included throughout the day in activities such as lunch, recess, assemblies, specials, clubs, and school-wide events.

Maria Logothetis

Maria Logothetis was drawn to special education by a desire for meaningful work and a passion for supporting children with diverse learning needs. She finds fulfillment in helping students grow in confidence and skill.

Her favorite part of teaching is celebrating student milestones, especially in reading development, which she describes as one of the most meaningful academic achievements. She also enjoys arts, crafts, and games that promote joy and peer interaction.

Maria values CAS for its strong collaboration among ABA staff and its deeply inclusive culture. She emphasizes that ABA instruction can be engaging, multisensory, and interactive, especially in small-group settings. Her students participate in general education classrooms for activities such as Fun Friday, academics, and special events, with strong support from welcoming staff and peers.

At CAS, something meaningful has taken shape, and it's led by our students At CAS, something meaningful has taken shape, and it's led by our students

“Inclusion = Incredible” began with a group of CAS Class of 2025 students who, in 4th grade, shared a vision to strengthen and celebrate the school’s culture of inclusion. What started as a student idea has grown into a lasting initiative that continues to shape the way students connect, even as those original leaders have moved on to the junior school. Their impact remains at the heart of this work.

Today, our 5th grade leaders have carried that vision forward and expanded it in creative and thoughtful ways. They lead weekly announcements promoting the Buddy Bench, organize ideas such as a courtyard Spring Picnic, and created a Recess Question Box to help peers connect and feel included. They also ensure that all students are considered in schoolwide experiences such as recess activities and the Talent Show. Their message is simple but powerful: everyone belongs here.

In recognition of Autism Acceptance Month, these student leaders are also guiding a schoolwide “Affirmation Chalk the Walk,” where 5th graders will share messages of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion across the blacktop. This work is fully student-driven, with staff serving in a supportive role behind the scenes. Looking ahead, these leaders are also preparing to mentor next year’s 4th graders to continue this culture of inclusion.

At Central Avenue School, inclusion is not a program—it is something students actively create and live every day.

Students from Inclusion = Incredible: Students from Inclusion = Incredible:

Everly Sachs

Everly joined the Inclusion Group after seeing the fun games and positive energy happening at the buddy bench each Friday. She believes inclusion is about creating a safe space where everyone can be themselves. Everly encourages students to include others at recess, compliment someone, or partner with someone new in class. She wants others to understand that the Inclusion Group is open to everyone and student-led, allowing members to participate and contribute in their own way.

Kelsey Heitzmann

Kelsey wanted to join the Inclusion Group because she realized she could make a difference by helping others feel included. She values the group’s message of kindness and believes it helps make it easier for students to say, “Come join me.” Kelsey encourages students to greet others, get to know someone new, and remember that it is never too late to be kind and inclusive.

Alexandra O’Brien

Alexandra joined the Inclusion Group because she enjoys helping others feel included and thought the activities looked fun. She believes it is important for everyone to feel seen, heard, and like they belong. Alexandra says inclusion means no one feels left out and everyone has a role. She wants others to know that everyone is a leader in the group, all ideas are valued, and anyone can join.

Izzy Zak

Izzy joined the Inclusion Group because she thought it was a wonderful way to help others feel special and included. She believes it is important to make sure everyone feels valued. Izzy encourages students to say hello, play with someone new at recess, and include everyone. She also wants others to know that the group is welcoming and flexible, not strict.

Charlotte Huthwaite

Charlotte joined the Inclusion Group because she believes being inclusive is very important and saw it as a great way to help others. She was also drawn to the fun games at the buddy bench. Charlotte says inclusion makes people feel special and valued, which is how everyone should feel. She encourages students to say hello, invite someone to play, or offer a compliment. Charlotte wants others to know that inclusion is for everyone and is a fun, safe place where no one is judged.

Hazel Manning

Hazel Manning joined the Inclusion Group after noticing a classmate alone on the playground and wanting to make a difference. Her caring nature and willingness to reach out show the true meaning of inclusion, making sure no one feels left out. Hazel understands that even small acts of kindness, like inviting someone to play or simply saying hello, can have a big impact. Through her thoughtful actions, Hazel reminds us all that inclusion starts with noticing others and choosing to make everyone feel welcome.
