Fire Drill

BMS held a Fire Drill at 10:30 a.m. today (November 3rd) as a safety measure to ensure that all staff members and students could successfully practice responding to such a critical incident should a fire ever occur in our school. We are required to hold at least four fire drills in a school year per state law. This was our third fire drill of the year. Staff and students exited the building in a timely and organized fashion. Firefighter Randy gave us 2 thumbs up!

We conduct these fire drills to ensure that our staff and students know what to do in the event of a fire so that everyone is educated and prepared.

The Rehoboth Fire Department monitored the building to assess how well we performed this drill as a school and were once again pleased with our response.

Please note that we went over the school's safety protocols with the students during the first week of school.

We thank you for supporting our efforts to keep students and staff safe. If you have any questions regarding fire drills or our safety procedures, please do not hesitate to contact us at 508-252-5080.

Chromebook Reminder

We could use your help in reminding students to charge their chromebooks each night and bring them to school each day. While we do have loaners, students who forget their chromebooks are asked to call home to either see if someone can bring theirs in OR help them remember the next day. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this matter.

Call for artwork

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will be moving in January and they would like to display student artwork at the entrance of their new office. The theme for this contest is “The Joy of Learning.” The winning entry should make you feel connected to the joy of learning, including pictures of classroom spaces, group work, displays of unity, etc. whatever it is about learning that makes you feel joyful. This can be newly created art or something you’ve already completed, either a poster type creation or 3-D sculpture. Please remind your student to submit their entry to Mrs. Abrams no later than November 13. If their artwork is selected by DESE you can win a prize. This contest is open to students in all grades.

Buses

Unfortunately, there has been an increase in bus write ups this year. In addition, drivers are looking for administration to come onto buses to speak to students about their bus riding behavior. Please remind your students about appropriate behavior on the bus. In addition to other safety needs, students are to remain in their seats and use an inside voice volume when riding the bus.

NEWS FROM THE NURSE

Scoliosis (postural) screenings will begin soon at Beckwith and will take place in gym class. If your child has seen their pediatrician this year and was already checked for curvature of their spine please send that documentation in as soon as possible. Students who have been checked by their MD will not be screened. If a parent decides to opt out of screening please email Mrs. Mondor, RN at cmondor@drregional.org stating their position of opting out.

Students are first screened by their gym teacher with the utmost privacy. Boys remove their shirt and girls will need to wear a sports bra, camisole or 2 piece bathing suit top for visual screening. The process takes about 30 seconds. Any students appearing with any suspected abnormality are then screened by Mrs. Mondor. If parents have any questions please call the school nurse Mrs. Mondor, RN at 508-252-5080 x4007

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

With the school year underway and the winter months fastly approaching, stress can be at an all time high for our students. Seasonal affective disorder is a condition in which an individual experiences a form of depression typically in the fall/winter months. This weekend, we will be turning back the clocks and our days will begin to appear shorter and darker. Check out these links to learn more about Seasonal affective disorder, the warning signs and ways to manage or treat our kids. Even if your child or you don’t experience this condition, some of the tips and tricks to help treat this disorder could be beneficial to maintain a positive attitude throughout these cold and dark months.

MYSCHOOL BUCKS INFORMATION

Please CLICK HERE for more information on MySchoolBucks.

Account payments can be made through MySchoolBucks.com using a debit/credit card or electronic check. We will also be accepting cash and check payments (CHECK ONLY at Beckwith Middle) at all cafeteria registers. Please make checks payable to “Dighton Rehoboth Regional School District” and include your student’s full name in the memo line.

School meals are once again free (see above); however, all students must use the point of sale system to obtain a free lunch. Please encourage your child to remember their lunch pin number because it helps to move along the lunch lines. If a student forgets their pin, then the cafeteria workers need to look it up and this stalls the lunch line.

Students will need to pay for snacks not included with the free meal and this is the reason why a parent would want to put money on their child's account.

ABSENCE PROCEDURE AND ABSENCE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM FOR FAMILIES AND EMAIL ADDRESS

School attendance and punctuality are closely correlated with success at school. Time in class cannot be replicated by simply giving the absent student the work that was missed. Frequent absences can leave gaps in a student’s education that can affect them for years to come. For more information on Attendances and Absences, please review the Student Handbook.

Please call into the 24/7 Absence Line by the start of the school day (8:15 a.m.) to report your student's absence. Leave a message that states the name of your child and why they will be absent. To reach the absence line call 508-252-5080 and press 1. Alternatively, you may also email the Main Office at bmsattendance@drregional.org by 8:15 a.m. This email address can be used to report your student's absence as well as to report a tardy or dismissal.

Families of students who are marked as having an unexcused absence and who do not call the Absence Line or email the aforementioned email address by 8:15 a.m. will receive a phone call, text message, and email notification from the District to inform them of the student absence. The message will prompt families to call the Main Office to confirm the absence as soon as possible. The timing of the notification will be 9:15 a.m.

All absences are considered unexcused with the exception of the following: student medical appointment/illness/quarantine (with a doctor’s note), bereavement, family emergencies, observance of major religious holidays, weather so inclement as to endanger the health of the child, court appearance, out of school suspension, disability-related absences, and unique circumstances approved at the Principal’s discretion. In instances of chronic or irregular absence reportedly due to illness, the school administration may request a physician's statement certifying such absences to be justifiable.

Please arrange for doctor's notes to be sent to the Main Office via Fax Number at 508-252-5082 or via email at svincelette@drregional.org
