Parent Teacher Conferences
We will be holding Parent–Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, October 13 from 12:30-4:30PM at Lynn Lucas Middle School.
During this time, teachers may begin reaching out to families to schedule a conference to discuss your child’s academic progress, strengths, and areas for growth. If you would like to schedule a conference during this window, please reach out to your child’s teachers as soon as possible to request a time.
Conference meetings will be scheduled in 15-minute increments. If you feel you may need more time than that, please let your child’s teacher or team know so they can adjust accordingly or schedule a separate meeting time.
We value strong partnerships between home and school, and these conversations are an important opportunity to work together in support of your child’s success.
Thank you for your continued support of Lynn Lucas Middle School. We look forward to connecting with you.
Attendance Updates
Important Attendance Information
Attendance letters are being sent to families of students who have accumulated more than three or five absences. If you receive a letter and have questions or concerns, please contact:
- Ms. Dilosa, Attendance Clerk: ndilosa@willisisd.org
- Ms. Walton, Attendance Assistant Principal: twalton@willisisd.org
Please remember that we may accept only three parent notes per student during the school year. After the third parent note, absences without documentation from a healthcare provider will be recorded as unexcused. Please send all excuse notes to Ms. Dilosa at ndilosa@willisisd.org
Under state attendance guidelines, absences may be excused when appropriate documentation is provided for:
- Religious holy days
- Required court appearances
- Activities related to obtaining United States citizenship
- Documented healthcare appointments
- Court-ordered activities for students in the conservatorship of the state
- Other court-ordered activities that require student participation and cannot be scheduled outside school hours
- Qualifying military-family visits with a parent, stepparent, or legal guardian who is departing for, on leave from, or returning from deployment—up to five days
Thank you for helping us protect your child’s instructional time and maintain strong attendance.

After School Tutoring
We are excited to offer after-school tutoring at Lynn Lucas Middle School for students who need additional academic support!
Tutoring Days
Tuesdays: RLA & Social Studies
Thursdays: Math & Science
If you would like your student to attend tutoring, please complete the form below:
Important: Tutoring Sign-Up & Communication
Parents/Guardians: Completing this form does NOT notify your child’s teacher that your student will be staying for tutoring.
This sign-up form is used by campus administration to track which students are staying after school. Teachers are not responsible for checking this list to determine which students will attend tutoring.
If you sign your child up for tutoring, you must also:
Email your child’s teacher to let them know your student will be staying for tutoring, OR
Make sure your child communicates directly with the teacher at least 24 hours before the day of tutoring for them to prepare assignments for them to complete and knows where to report for tutoring.
24-Hour Sign-Up Requirement
Students must be signed up for tutoring at least 24 hours in advance.
We will not accept same-day tutoring sign-ups. This allows us to plan appropriately for staffing, student supervision, and transportation.
Thank you for helping us keep after-school tutoring organized and safe for all of our Lynx!

Students may ride a tutoring bus to one of our designated satellite bus stops. Parents/guardians are responsible for meeting their student at the satellite stop or making arrangements for their student to get home safely from that location.
Please note: The bus will drop students off at the satellite stop and leave. The bus will NOT wait for a parent/guardian to arrive.

Minga Info for Parents
Understanding Your Student’s Minga Summary
Your student’s Minga Summary may show a negative number for points earned during the week. This can happen when they spend points on Minga Recess or an item from the Minga Store.
For example, if your student earns 35 points during the week and spends 50 points they had saved, the summary may show –15 points earned. That does not mean points were taken away as a consequence. It reflects the points they spent.
If you see a negative number, ask your student what they purchased! If you believe there is an error, please email your student’s grade-level administrator:
- 6th grade and 7th grade A–L: Mr. Elkins, telkins@willisisd.org
8th grade and 7th grade M–Z: Ms. Walton, twalton@willisisd.org

RU OK? Presentations
September is Suicide Prevention Month. During the month of September, counselors will be conducting lessons teaching our students how to check on each other in times of stress. Building meaningful connections is so important to helping our students when it is most needed. The lessons will utilize resources from https://www.ruok.org.au/. We will focus on reviewing the steps in an RU OK? Conversation, and when it is important to seek help from a trusted adult. The steps are Ask Are you OK?, Listen, Encourage Action, and Check in. If you have any questions, please reach out to the counselors.
Backpack Food Opportunity
If you are interested in your child receiving the weekly backpack food bags, please fill out the permission slip and return to a counselor.

Permission Slips are due by Oct. 9th. Please email or call Mrs. Daily with any questions!

Birthdays for Your Student
- To ensure student safety and accommodate food allergies, all items must be commercially prepared, store-bought, and submitted for campus approval at least one week prior to the celebration.
- Homemade food items will not be permitted.
- You must bring enough for all students in your child's class at the time of the celebration.
- The principal reserves the right to approve the date, time, and location of all celebrations.
Please complete this form with at least one week's notice to bring treats to your student for their birthday: Birthday TREAT Celebration Form
Lunch with Your Student
For the safety and supervision of all students, only your child may join you during a lunch visit. Friends or other students are not permitted to join parent lunches or bring lunches for students.
Parents and their child must sit at the designated parent tables and may not sit with other students in the cafeteria. Additionally, parents may only bring food for their own child and may not provide food to other students.
This expectation has been shared with students and is also included in our Student Expectations presentation, which is attached at the bottom of our newsletter each week for your reference.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our campus safe, structured, and focused on learning for all Lynx! 💜🖤
Family Engagement Plan and Compacts
As a Title 1 campus, we will send a yearly Family Engagement Plan and Student Compact. The purpose of the Student Compact is to offer ways that we can work together to help our students succeed. This compact provides strategies to help connect learning at school and at home.

Dismissal Reminders
🚶 Walker Dismissal Procedures
Students designated as walkers will report to the back hallway at dismissal. Staff members will use Minga to check students out as walkers before they leave campus. Below is map of the walker dismissal route. Please note walkers are to NOT be picked up behind the school.
🚗 Car Riders and Walkers Safety Reminder
For the safety of all students, parents may not park behind the school or in nearby parking lots, streets, or businesses to pick up students.
All car riders must be picked up through the designated front car rider line. If your student is a walker, do not attempt to pick them up in our back lots or side streets. Our officers have stated they will issue citations if students are being picked up on the road and causing any form of traffic blocks.
Our carline runs starting from about 4:05. Most days, our carline is done by 4:30, and any remaining students go inside the building at this time. After 4:40, parents must come inside to sign out their child and provide a reason for the late pick up. Please sign up and register for a bus if pick up is later than 4:30.
Cell Phone Policy
- 💼 In compliance with Texas House Bill 1481 and to support a focused and respectful learning environment, personal communication devices (such as cell phones, smartwatches, and earbuds) are not allowed to be used during the school day in Willis ISD. This includes during class time, breakfast, lunch, and while moving between classes.
- 📵 Students must keep their devices turned OFF and stored AWAY in their backpacks throughout the day. If a student uses a device without permission during school hours, it will be confiscated and addressed as detailed in the Student Handbook.
- 📱 Exceptions are provided for students covered under a Section 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that includes cell phone access as an accommodation. Access will be permitted as outlined in their individual plans.
Parents Welcome to Come Visit Your Child's Classroom
We are excited to invite you to observe in our classrooms. We prefer to limit the observation to one classroom.
To ensure a positive and productive learning environment for all students, please follow these guidelines:
Observation Only – Your role today is to watch and learn about your child’s classroom experience.
No Interaction with Other Students – For privacy and safety, please do not engage with other children.
Avoid Teacher Distractions – This is not the time for a conference or individual questions. If you’d like to discuss your child’s progress, please schedule a separate conference time with the teacher.
Please keep the Parent Observer card visible and your badge on your shirt so it is clearly seen.
Thank you for helping us keep the focus on student learning and maintaining a respectful, distraction-free environment.
MINGA
We will be using Minga this year to help track positive praise and guidance/behaviors for your student. In addition, it also tracks tardies, dress code, and telecommunication violations. More information will be coming on how parents can connect with Minga to view their student's data from all staff.
Students have access to Minga on Clever at school, but they can also download the app on their cell phones. They use their school google login to connect with their account. Any questions about Minga can be directed to Mrs. Soose at asoose@willisisd.org.
The Willis ISD webpage has been updated. Therefore the handbook link did not work. The new link is here: https://bit.ly/wisdstudenthandbook
