Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful and joyful holiday season filled with cherished moments. As we step into 2025, we’re excited to continue building a strong and supportive school community together.

January marks a fresh start, and we have many exciting opportunities ahead. Here are a few important updates to keep in mind:

  • Upcoming Events: Bitty Basketball, 5th/6th Spelling Bee, & our 3rd Quarter School & Family Connection Event: Block Fest.
  • Focus on Learning: With new goals for the year, we encourage students to embrace challenges, stay curious, and give their best effort in all they do.
  • Winter Weather Reminder: Please ensure your child dresses appropriately for the season, especially for outdoor activities like recess. Please review Mr. Lindy's November Superintendent's Message for information regarding extreme weather, snow days, etc.
  • Family Engagement: We value our partnership with families and encourage you to stay connected. Look out for opportunities to get involved in school activities or provide feedback.

As always, your partnership is invaluable. Whether through volunteering, supporting your child’s learning at home, or sharing feedback, your involvement strengthens our school community.

Let’s make 2025 a year of growth, connection, and achievement! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or suggestions.

Warm Regards,

Jenah Burkitt, Principal

Arbor Management has recently been acquired by Whitson's Culinary Group. Part of the transition to Whitsons Culinary Group is the change of the current myschoolmenus digital menu platform that we have been using to the new FD Meal Planner digital menu platform. This program has all the same features that myschoolmenus has with the additional option to use a mobile app.

You can click on the button below, and you will be taken to the new online platform where you can choose the school location you would like to see the menu for.

Physical Education & Health Physical Education & Health

We've been on a roll in the gym at the AFC Elementary School! Throughout the month of December, there were many holiday games being played where scooters were a highlight for all ages! Not only are scooters a student favorite but also a great full body workout!

As we come back from break, we take rolling to the next level as we strap on our roller skates and turn the gym into our very own roller rink. The kids get a chance to practice their roller skating skills with their friends and learn some good ole fashion fun! The older students also have an opportunity to help their little friends by being a buddy and lending them a hand to get their skates and safety gear on and supporting them in getting the idea of learning how to skate! Probably the most long awaited week by the students!

We will continue to focus on our basic basketball skills as the older students are experiencing their basketball season and the younger grades are gearing up for bitty ball! Such an exciting time in the gym!

AFC Attendance Policy AFC Attendance Policy

As a friendly reminder, per our AFC Student Handbook:

Excessive tardies or absences may be referred to the Lee/Ogle/Whiteside Regional Office of Education’s Attendance Support Program for assistance. A student may be referred to the Attendance Support Program after four (6) unexcused and nine (9) excused absences during the previous 180 days of school attendance. If a student misses three (3) consecutive days, they must bring in a physician’s note for the absences to be considered excused. Also, after nine (9) absences per school year, to excuse each absence thereafter, a physician’s note will be required within 24 hours of the student’s return to school. While seeking a medical excuse, the student’s parent or guardian must still comply with absence notification procedures. Students are permitted to return to school while a physician’s note is being obtained, assuming the student has been fever, vomit, and diarrhea free for 24 hours (fever must be below 100.4 without fever-reducing medications).

Exclusions Due to Illness Exclusions Due to Illness

zoom_out_map

We encourage attendance everyday as there is a strong link between attendance and academic achievement. Students must be present to learn. We trust parents and guardians will use their best judgement in deciding if their child(ren) are well enough to be present in school.

As a friendly reminder, per our AFC Student Handbook:

Ashton-Franklin Center CUSD #275 will exclude students based on typically qualifying symptoms such as: fever of 100.4 or higher (fever must be below 100.4 without fever-reducing medications), vomiting, and diarrhea. Students may return when they are fever-free/symptom-free for 24 hours without medication.

Please refer to our Student Handbook (linked at the bottom of this memo) for additional information regarding school attendance.
