News and Notes
Parent Education Opportunity
Dear Brockport High School parents and community members,
At the beginning of this school year, I sent communication regarding our focus at BHS this year on educating our students and families on the dangers of e-cigarette use, or “vaping.” In that communication I shared that a 2020 U.S. CDC study, 19.6% of high school students reported using a vaping product within the past 30 days. Among those, 22.5% of high school students said they did so daily. In that letter, I also shared that that we would be working with our PTSA and our BHS Prevention Counselor Ms. Nicca Lattuca on opportunities to educate our students and families on the dangers and health risks associated with the use of these products.
On Wednesday, October 26th, from 6:30-7:30 in the Large Group Instruction room, Brockport High School will host Jennifer Faringer, the Director for the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in the Rochester Area for a parent presentation titled When the Smoke Clears… Serious Risks around Vaping and its connection with Marijuana. This presentation will provide an opportunity for parents to explore the serious risks that surround vaping as well as its connection to underage marijuana use. Presented will be what to look for both physically and behaviorally, as well as referral resources and tips for having conversations with your student.
I hope you will join us on the evening of the 26th for what I know will be an informative and supportive presentation.

2022 BCSD Red Ribbon Week Coming Later in October!
From the office of the Delphi Prevention Counselor, Nicca Lattuca, LMHC
Red Ribbon Week is the alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States. Of those who struggle with an addiction, or substance use disorder, 90% of them began using drugs under the age of 18 (preventionalliance.org, 2022). The goal of prevention is to increase and improve protective factors while reducing risk factors.
Please see the flyer linked here for prevention information, resources and tips on how to engage in conversations with your child about substance misuse and peer pressure.
Any questions or concerns please contact me at nicca.lattuca@bcs1.org
