Fourth Graders from HSS and MLS singing at Colburn Park this Weekend
It is hard to believe that Monday is the beginning of our second trimester already. The teachers have been hard at work for the past week getting ready for parent teacher conferences. If you have not signed up for a conference, please reach out to your child's teacher and set one up.
The PTO has been handing out dictionaries in 3rd grade, selling wreaths, raising money, and hosting a fun movie night on Friday. We appreciate all you do for our school community.

Winter Assembly
Please join the whole school in the gym on December 21st at 2:00 for a winter celebration. We will have a lot of people in the building, so we will need to do dismissal as usual. You will exit the school after the assembly and then at 3:00 we will dismiss using PikMyKid. We hope to see you all then.
Construction
The project continues to be on schedule with no major changes. Mechanical, plumbing, and electrical work is ongoing in the classroom addition as well as the cafeteria. We are developing a plan for how the new spaces will be used in the fall.
Reminders
Dec. 7th - Early Dismissal at 12:30, December 8th - No School
Please note that this is a different dismissal time than last year.
Report Cards
You should be able to view your child's report card in Alma on December 6th so please make sure that you have access to Alma. Parent/Teacher conferences will be held this week and will provide you with an opportunity to discuss your child's progress with their teacher. If your conference is in the evening, the teacher will give you a door code.
Three Safety Announcements
No Latex in School
Please avoid bringing latex into the building. The two most common items are probably balloons and rubber bands, both of which can be purchased latex free. Mylar or foil balloons are latex free. Thank you.
Emergency Drills
We are required to complete a number of emergency drills during the year. Those drills are to practice exiting the building in an emergency like a fire, clearing the hallways, entering the building from recess in case of an outside threat like a rabid dog, etc. If your children mention that something like this happened during the day, please do not be concerned. If there is an actual event, the whole school community will be notified. I mention this because we will be doing a reverse evacuation drill this week during recess and I don't want to alarm anyone.
Parking and One Way Lane
We have noticed cars turning into the HSS part of the parking lot, not finding a parking spot, and then driving the wrong way on the road to get to the high school part of the lot. When you enter the parking lot, you can turn directly into the high school side to park if you wish (As noted on the map).
News from the Nurse
Vaccines Keep Us All Healthier
Vaccines are the best tool we have against infectious diseases. Since the FDA has approved numerous vaccines over the decades, diseases such as smallpox and polio are nearly non-existent. Although vaccines don’t prevent disease 100% of the time to 100% of the population, they are very effective at decreasing contagion as well as severity of symptoms and overall illness. Please consider getting all your family members vaccinated for the FLU and COVID this season.
Do you know why vaccines keep us healthier? Vaccines help boost our immune systems to fight against certain bacteria and viruses.
Vaccines are safe. They have gone through a rigorous process both through the CDC and FDA. All adverse reactions to vaccines are reported to these agencies as this is required by all medical providers. Therefore, getting vaccinated can greatly help protect you and others from getting various illnesses.
I am including a document from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology to help debunk some common misconceptions around vaccines. I urge you to review it:

Show Us Your Wreaths
Thank you to everyone that purchased a wreath from the PTO. We are grateful to Nichols Tree Farm for the beautiful wreaths that last forever. We want to see your wreaths! Message the PTO with a picture of your wreath and we will share them on our Instagram/Facebook pages.
Next Meeting, Thursday 12/7
Please join us for our next meeting this Thursday at 6:30 in the HSS library. All are welcome. We will do a review of the year and start mapping out events for the rest of the school year.
Thank You
Volunteerism can happen in many different ways. Getting involved with the HSS PTO looks different to every person. From Game Night, Movie Night, Kindergarten Kick Off, handing out dictionaries to 3rd graders, contributing to our Annual Fund Drive or helping to hand out wreaths, we are grateful to this amazing school community. Thank you.
Free and Reduced Lunch Applications: It's More Than A Meal Application!
We strongly urge all families to apply for meal benefits through one of the methods listed below, even if your family has yet to qualify for benefits in the past. Enrollment in the meal benefits program assists our district and students far beyond the positive impacts on student health. Additional funding for student education, technology, scholarships, and more is tied to meal benefit enrollment. For any student to be able to receive free or reduced-price meals, families will need to take one of the following actions:
Enroll in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program can be applied for online at: https://nheasy.nh.gov/#/apply-benefits
Submit a meal benefit application to our school district. A copy of the application was distributed to all students with back-to-school packets and is available for pick up at all school buildings and the SAU. If not, you can apply online at www.lunchapplication.com.
Students not enrolled in free meals through one of the methods above and who choose to participate in the school meals program will be charged per meal and may need funds added to their food service program account. Prices for meals in the 2023-2024 school year are:
Breakfast - Elementary $2.00, Reduced price $0.00
Lunch - Elementary $3.45, Reduced price $0.40
