The Home-School Connection
June 15, 2026
The NY Knicks are the Champions!!!
Congratulations to all the Knicks fans and supporters in our community. It has been such a fun run for our students, our families, and all of New York. For those like me who have been mired in decades of unfulfilled seasons, this is an amazing moment of celebration and joy!
Like many of you, I am continually impressed by the team's star point guard, Jalen Brunson. As celebrations raged all around him after the big win, Brunson was asked how he was able to summon a 45-point performance while the defense hounded him for 48 minutes. In a statement that reflected both his humility and his confidence in his preparation, he said:
"My confidence comes from my work ethic. Every time I had the ball, all I could think about is all the hours in the summer... making this a reality. So, whenever I had the ball, I'm just thinking about just me alone in the gym."
May this incredible message inspire our students as they begin their exams this week. We hope they arrive at school each day comforted by the hard work they have put in all year, and all of those quiet—and sometimes solitary—moments of studying and preparation.
There is a wonderful quote by Jacob Riis that perfectly captures this sentiment:
“When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.”
With just two weeks to go in the school year, let's encourage our kids to keep hammering away!
Entering the Final Stretch
As we step into the week of June 15th, the incredible momentum and energy from last week’s milestone celebrations are still carrying us forward. We have officially entered the final stretch of the school year, and it is a time to truly appreciate how far our students and our entire community have come.
The days ahead are all about reflection, gratitude, and finishing strong. While the calendar begins to shift toward closing out the year, our focus remains on maintaining a warm, supportive, and positive environment for your children. Every high-five in the hallway, every final review session, and every shared smile makes a world of difference as they wrap up this chapter.
This week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the enduring connections we’ve built, the growth we’ve witnessed, and the community spirit that keeps us anchored. Let’s work together to make these final days both meaningful and memorable for our students.
Thank you for your remarkable partnership, support, and dedication throughout this busy school year. You are a vital part of our school's heartbeat, and we couldn't ask for a better community to close out the year with.
Let's keep the energy high, the focus sharp, and have a beautiful week ahead!
All the best,
Mr. Keegan

LCAC Junior Volunteer of the Year Award
Please join me in congratulating Alivia Munro for being named a runner-up for the Levittown Community Council's Jr. Volunteer of the Year Award! Alivia was nominated by Holly Harouche, who wrote a beautiful letter highlighting the incredible, positive impact Alivia has made on both our school and the wider community.
This prestigious honor recognizes one exceptional student in grades 6–8 across Salk, Wisdom Lane, and ITMMS who has gone above and beyond in service to others. To be eligible for this award, a student’s volunteer work must be entirely unpaid, completely separate from school coursework, and truly extraordinary in nature. It honors those who show deep compassion, a genuine desire to help, and a commitment to responding to real needs within our community.
We are incredibly proud of Alivia for representing our school community with such heart and dedication. Please join us in celebrating her wonderful achievement.

Art & Technology Expo
Please join me in celebrating the incredible success of last evening’s Art and Technology Expo! We had an absolutely spectacular turnout of families in attendance, which served as a wonderful illustration of our school's strong home-school connection. It was a true joy to see our community come together to appreciate the amazing, creative, and innovative projects our students have been working on all year.
An event of this magnitude requires tremendous dedication, and we want to extend a huge "thank you" and special commendation to Mrs. McNally for her tireless hard work in coordinating this amazing experience for our school and community. This evening could not have been the success that it was without Mrs. McNally's leadership and creative vision.
We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to our incredible teachers and staff members who contributed their time, energy, and talents to make the event a success: Mr. Seigneuray, Mr. Norton, Mrs. Bunster, Mr. Ingenito, Ms. Vasco, Mrs. Greci, Ms. Matalevich, Ms. Goldstein, and Ms. Lospitalier.
It really was an amazing night, and it would not have been possible without your enthusiastic support.
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate our students' achievements! If you couldn't make it, or if you simply want to relive the evening, we have posted many photos to our X account here: https://x.com/IslandtreesMMS.

8th Grade Trip to Washington DC
Reflecting on the past ten days, we are still smiling from our incredibly rewarding 8th-grade trip to Washington, D.C., which took place from May 6th through May 8th. The trip was a resounding success, and our students had an unforgettable time exploring our nation's capital, building lasting memories, and bringing their history lessons to life.
An undertaking of this size is only possible through the dedication of our wonderful chaperones and organizers. We want to extend a very special thank you to our trip coordinators, Ms. Aponte and Mrs. Azar, whose meticulous planning and tireless effort ensured our students had a safe, educational, and seamless experience from start to finish. Their leadership and deep commitment to our students truly made all the difference.

5th Grade to the Nassau County Police Training Center
At Island Trees Memorial Middle School, we hold a deep respect and appreciation for the law enforcement and peace officers who work tirelessly each day to serve, protect, and defend our communities. These dedicated professionals put their lives on the line to ensure our neighborhoods remain safe, welcoming places for our families to thrive, and we are incredibly grateful for their unwavering service.
As part of our commitment to fostering community connections and civic awareness, all of our 5th-grade classes had the unique opportunity this year to visit the Nassau County Police Training Center. During these visits, our students got a firsthand look at the rigorous preparation, skill, and dedication required of our officers. It was an invaluable educational experience that allowed our students to better understand the vital work the Nassau County Police Department does to protect and serve us all every single day.
We are proud to stand in support of our local law enforcement, and we thank our 5th-grade teachers, families, and the Nassau County Police Department for partnering with us to bring this meaningful experience to our students.
Thank you for your continued support of our school community.
5th Grade to the Jones Beach Nature Center
Over the past month, our 5th graders have had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center, an experience that perfectly aligns with our mission to provide transformational learning outside of the classroom. These field trips brought science to life through hands-on activities and outdoor exploration designed to enhance STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) learning. Fully aligned with the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards, the programs allowed our students to explore the coastal environment, examine local ecosystems, and learn about energy systems in a dynamic, real-world setting.
We would like to extend a special thank you to our families for your continued support of these programs and events. Your partnership allows us to provide these enriching, memorable experiences that expand our students' horizons well beyond the school walls!
National Principals Day
Island Trees community, thank you for your amazing support of this principal and our outstanding middle school! What a joy it is to work alongside each of you to support our students.

International Night '26
A huge note of thanks to the students, families, and staff who attended International Night on Tuesday, April 21st. It was truly a spectacular evening that showcased the vibrant heart of our school and community, and the energy in the room was a testament to the incredible bond we share.
We want to extend a special shout-out to all those who led sessions and helped share their cultures with our attendees. From the stunning displays and traditional performances to the beautiful stories shared, your contributions transformed the night into a rich tapestry of global heritage. It was an inspiring reminder of the wealth of perspectives we are lucky to have in our backyard.
Thank you for making this event so meaningful and for bringing such warmth and spirit to our halls. What a beautiful night for our school and community to come together and celebrate the world as one.
A Message Regarding Social Media Use
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we begin the final quarter of the school year this Monday, I would like to share some important notes on our students' digital well-being.
Recent national reports continue to highlight the significant risks social media poses to adolescent mental health. To support our students, we are maintaining an ongoing dialogue in school regarding the themes from our STOP, Then Send assembly. We also continue to reflect on the powerful testimony from Mr. Halligan's Ryan Story presentation regarding the real-world harms of social media, as well as the legal guidance provided by the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. Additionally, our school maintains a close relationship with the Nassau County Police Department's 8th Precinct. They have shared that if a parent feel as though a child is being victimized or wants to make a report, they should contact the 8th Precinct to make this report.
Key Takeaways for Students
We have reminded our students that being a member of the Island Trees community requires acting with safety, respect, and responsibility—both in person and online. We continue to discuss the serious consequences of digital misconduct, which include:
Legal Risks: Potential law enforcement involvement regarding harassment, bullying, or privacy violations.
School Consequences: Formal investigations and the potential loss of privileges, including participation in sports, clubs, honor societies, and school trips.
How Families Can Help
The start of Quarter 4 is an ideal time to reset expectations. I encourage you to continue these conversations at home using the following strategies:
Create a "Family Media Plan": Establish clear boundaries regarding content, privacy settings, and daily time limits.
Prioritize Connection: Designate mealtimes and family gatherings as "device-free zones" to foster genuine social interaction.
Encourage Reflection: Remind your child to pause and consider if a single post or message is worth the long-term academic or legal risks.
Thank you for your partnership in helping our students navigate the digital world with maturity and integrity.
Best regards,
Mr. Keegan

Ryan's Story for Grades 7 & 8
Dear 7th & 8th Grade Families,
Island Trees Memorial Middle School is committed to taking proactive steps to curb a problem found in schools everywhere: bullying and cyberbullying. In support of this, we invited Mr. John Halligan, an international speaker and author, to conduct a presentation for our students. This presentation was held during the school day on Wednesday, March 25th.
He relayed his own tragic experience as a parent whose 13-year-old son, Ryan, took his own life in 2003 after experiencing bullying from his peers since the 5th grade, both in school and online. Mr. Halligan further shared that Ryan wrestled with underlying mental health issues and depression, and these factors contributed to Ryan’s vulnerability and ultimate suicide. His story was riveting and compelling, serving as a powerful reminder to students that there is a face, a person, and a heart on the other end of the screen.
Presentation Details
The presentation on March 25th will included:
- A Memorial Tribute: A short video collection of home movie clips and still pictures of Ryan.
- The Journey: Mr. Halligan told the story of Ryan’s life and the factors that led up to his son’s suicide.
- Inside Perspective: Students gained a unique perspective from inside the family of a child who is a victim of bullying.
- Life Lessons: The session wrapped up with lessons on forgiveness, suicide prevention, the role of bystanders, and a personal challenge for students to apologize to someone they may have hurt.
We encourage you to visit the website named for his son, www.RyansStory.org, for more information and resources.
NYS Spring Assessments
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Just a friendly reminder that April brings us the start of NYS testing. Like last year, the Island Trees School District will be participating in Computer Based Testing in grades 3-8 in ELA and math. Like the last two years, the NYS Science Assessment is administered in Grades 5 and 8. Here is some important information you need to know:
The ELA Test will be administered over two days at ITMMS:
April 14th and April 15th for all grades
The Science Test will be administered on one day at ITMMS:
- April 29th for Grades 5 & 8
The Math Test will be administered over two days at ITMMS:
May 4th and May 5th for all grades
As a reminder, our students have already participated in multiple experiences similar to the testing format, and we are excited about their progress. If you have made the personal decision to have your child refuse participation in any part of the NYS Assessments, please send a note to me as soon as you have made that decision. You can e-mail me at: dkeegan@islandtrees.org or send me a written note prior to our testing dates. Parent Square messages will not be accepted.
Important Notes:
- Please be reminded that there will be a normal bus schedule during testing days.
Tests will be administered at the beginning of 1st period (8:17 AM) on each of our testing days.
As always, on-time school attendance is most supportive of our students and our staff.
- Students who have opted out of testing but arrive at our normal time are expected to bring a book to read. Students who are not testing will report to a separate location from the testing rooms.
Students who have opted out of testing but choose to stay home until the end of testing, are asked to arrive to school between 10:10 AM-10:25 AM.
If you have any questions about other ways that you can assist your child at home or additional questions about state testing, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or reach out to me directly. If you might be interested in test samplers that NYS provides, please take a look here: https://ny.nextera.questarai.com/tds/#practice.
Thank you for your continued support.

Vinny's Army
Dear Families,
We would like to come together as a school community to support a wonderful local organization, Vinny’s Army.
Vinny was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 10. During his treatment, his family created what they called “clinic bags” or “go bags.” These bags were filled with activities and comfort items to help keep him distracted, occupied, and supported through difficult days.
Inspired by Vinny’s journey, he and his family turned this idea into an organization dedicated to helping other children undergoing cancer treatment. Through the distribution of “Soldier Sacks,” the organization aims to bring comfort, encouragement, and a sense of strength to young patients and their families during an incredibly challenging time.
As a school community, we will be collecting items to help create Soldier Sacks. Examples of items that can be donated include: crayons, colored pencils, markers, coloring books, stickers, card games, activity books, handheld games, stress balls, LEGO sets, charging wires, journals, crossword puzzles, and similar small activities. Please note: please, no stuffed animals.
If you and your family would like to donate, please send items to school with your child to give to their teacher. We will be collecting from March 10, 2026 until March 19, 2026.
Thank you for your support!

Caught Being Kind in January
Throughout the month of January, a quiet but powerful wave of kindness swept through the halls of Island Trees Memorial Middle School. While our students are often recognized for their academic, artistic, and athletic achievements, each month we turn our focus toward the heart of our community: those moments of genuine character that happen when students think no one is watching.
Our faculty and staff spent the last several weeks keeping a keen eye out for our "Caught Being Kind" moments. These did not need to be grand gestures or rehearsed performances. Instead, they were the small, authentic choices that define who our Bulldogs are becoming.
We witnessed students:
Stopping to help a peer pick up dropped books in a crowded hallway.
Offering a seat or a friendly word to someone sitting alone at lunch.
Quietly tidying up a classroom without being asked.
Holding the door for others with a genuine smile.
These "extra efforts" are the threads that weave our school into a supportive and welcoming home. By choosing kindness in the quiet moments, our students are proving that character isn't just about what you do in the spotlight—it’s about how you treat others when you think nobody is looking.
To our families, thank you for reinforcing these values at home. We are incredibly proud of our students for starting the new calendar year with such compassion and spirit. Let’s keep this momentum going throughout the school year.
Big Game Day at ITMMS
Manfred Korman's Visit to ITMMS
On January 28th, students at Island Trees Memorial Middle School had the profound honor of hosting Holocaust survivor Manfred (Manny) Korman. His visit offered a rare and deeply moving firsthand account of history, providing our students with a living connection to the past.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1931, Manny was only six years old when his life was upended. He shared the harrowing details of his family’s deportation to Poland alongside thousands of other Jewish families. Students listened intently as he described the meager conditions of their displacement, including being forced to live in horse stables, and the eventual, agonizing separation from his parents.
Manny’s story is a testament to the challenging and desperate nature of the era. While his father sought passage on the ill-fated St. Louis, his mother returned to Germany in a perilous attempt to secure visas for the United States. Meanwhile, Manny and his brother, Gerd, were accepted into the Kindertransport program, which provided them safe passage to England and likely saved their lives.
After years of uncertainty and living through the war in England, Manny and Gerd were finally able to travel to the United States, where they were miraculously reunited with their family.
This unforgettable educational experience would not have been possible without the dedication of our faculty. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our English Department, led by Mrs. Friedman, for coordinating this visit. By bringing history to life through Manny’s incredible journey from no man's land to reunion, you have provided our students with a lesson in empathy and resilience that they will carry with them forever.
The Outsiders on Broadway
The 8th grade class swapped the classroom for the bright lights of Manhattan this past Thursday for a special performance of The Outsiders on Broadway. This immersive cultural excursion provided students with a front-row seat to one of the most celebrated new productions in American theater.
Bringing Literature to Life
The production offered a breathtaking reimagining of S.E. Hinton’s classic novel. Set against the backdrop of 1960s Tulsa, the story follows Ponyboy Curtis and his Greaser brothers as they navigate a bitter rivalry with the wealthy Socs. Through visceral choreography and a haunting folk-rock score, the musical brought the story’s core themes of brotherhood, sacrifice, and the search for belonging to life in a way that resonated deeply with the students.
From the Page to the Stage
This trip served as a direct extension of the English Language Arts curriculum. By witnessing the adaptation firsthand, students were able to engage in high-level literary analysis, observing how internal monologues from the text are translated into stage directions and song.
Leadership in the Arts
This significant cultural experience was made possible through the dedicated leadership of Mrs. Friedman and Ms. Losi. Their meticulous planning and commitment to experiential learning ensured that the logistics of the trip were seamless, allowing students to focus entirely on the artistic and educational value of the performance.
Our school extends a sincere thank you to the 8th grade families for their continued support in making these vital enrichment opportunities a reality for our students. It was truly a day to stay gold.

CBT Simulations & Technology Readiness - 5th & 6th Grade - January 27th
Dear Parents/Guardians of 5th & 6th Grade Students,
As New York State continues to move towards computer-based testing, part of the transition includes ensuring that districts around the state have the technology and network capacity to accommodate this shift. Island Trees is ready; in fact, we successfully administered computer-based tests in 3-8 ELA, Math, and Science assessments last spring. Additionally, our Island Trees High School students took the PSAT digitally for the third time this fall, and they will be taking the digital SAT for the third time this spring. In fact, the majority of the AP exams we offer here at Island Trees High School will either be fully digital or hybrid digital.
This spring, we will once again move forward with computer-based testing for all 3-8 assessments in ELA, Math, and Science (grades 5 & 8). Our students, teachers, and staff are becoming increasingly familiar with the digital test format, question types, and the online assessment tools they will experience during testing using the New York State Testing Program Question Sampler, which can be accessed here.
In addition, on January 27th, we will once again participate in computer-based testing simulations to evaluate our readiness for the actual testing this spring, as required by New York State. Our 5th grade (Science) and 6th grade (Math) students will review a sampling of standards-based questions utilizing the digital platform. Results are not stored and are not graded or evaluated.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me.
Thank you,
Daniel Keegan, Principal

Erin's Law Lessons in 5th Grade
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to inform you that our 5th-grade students in their SEL classes will be learning about Erin's Law, which focuses on personal safety and abuse prevention. These important lessons aim to empower students with knowledge about their bodies, boundaries, and the importance of speaking up if they ever feel unsafe.
The lessons, which are scheduled to begin on January 26th, will be age-appropriate and designed to create a safe and supportive environment. We encourage you to talk with your child about what they learn and to reinforce the messages of safety and trust.
Please see below for New York State Education department guidance on Erin's Law.

Thank you for your support!

What is Success?
How Do We Define Success?
How Do We Define Success?
Is a 98 average the clearest indicator of a student's success?
Is it success when a student earns an 84 Q2 average after finishing with a 77 in Q1?
Is it success when a students takes a chance and tries out for the school’s Talent Show?
Is it success when a student gets charged up about science due to his work in the lab even though he still might struggle on exams?
Is it success when an 8th grader develops stronger time management and organizational skills to meet the challenges of an advanced program?
Is it success when a child gets a 94% in English 7A even though she decided not to try out for basketball due to concerns about the academic workload?
Is it success when a family finds 30 minutes at night to sit together at the table to review homework, study, and talk through the family schedule?
I pose these questions as an exercise to help us all remember the many factors that go into our understanding and discussions around the word success. These questions also provide a reminder that success for each of us is defined differently.
Our adolescent learners are provided with so many different experiences during their middle school years. Whether it is studying a second language, participating in a school musical, playing lacrosse for the first time, participating in a community service initiative, joining our Robotics Club, or deeply diving into family and community-based activities outside of ITMMS, our children are presented with such a great variety of experiences and opportunities during this stage of their lives. It is my hope that our children will use these many experiences to grow, to discover what makes them tick, and to see pathways by which they can positively impact the world.
May we move into the second quarter of our school year committed to helping our students find great success—however it may be defined. May we work together to help our students reach for stars, while knowing that the process is often slow and incremental. And may we keep the lines of communication open so that our children know that we are all on the same team with only one goal—to help our kids become the best versions of themselves.
All the best!
Mr. Keegan

Online Attendance Reporting
First Shared on August 29th
We are excited to share with you our new attendance procedures for the 2025-2026 school year. This year, we ask that all absences, latenesses, and early departures are shared with the school using the Parent Portal.
Please follow the steps in the attachment to inform us of your child’s attendance status, reason for absence or lateness, and any other information our attendance office may require. Please note that this process will replace calling the attendance office. We ask that you ensure that your Parent Portal username and password are working before the start of school on September 3rd. Parent Portal passwords and instructions were sent home in the August mailing. If you have any issues, please contact our Technology Office.
It is our hope that this new online platform will make the lines of communication between home and school even stronger--especially on days that can be challenging due to illness or injury.
We look forward to a great year!

Such a Great Way to Start a Day
Library Media Center
It is the mission of the School Library Media Center to ensure that students develop the skills necessary to become independent, capable, competent information users and lifelong learners. These skills include the ability to locate, access, evaluate, organize, integrate, use and communicate information and ideas from a wide variety of sources and formats. Instruction, therefore, integrates information skills into curriculum units rather than teaching them in isolation. Student-centered research projects are developed and coordinated through a cooperative effort with classroom teachers.

You (Our Kids) Deserve It
Powered Down & Put Away
While social media streams and incessant texting and digital communications play an increasingly large role in the lives of our students (and many of us), I ask for your support as we speak with one voice regarding phones, smart watches, and other personal electronic devices in our school.
From the moment our students enter our school building until the moment they exit our school, we will expect that all phones, smart watches, and personal electronic devices are "Powered Down and Put Away." This year, we will require that our students store their cellphones, smart phones and other internet-enabled devices in their lockers from the start of our school day-dismissal at 2:34 PM.
Please join us as we make this expectation clear to your children from Day 1. As with other policies, it is important when working with adolescents to explain the "why" behind the policy. Please join me in clearly articulating our belief that our kids deserve it; that 6 1/2 hours of a day without a text tone, vibration, or push notification is healthy and will help to promote focus and their full presence.
Please note that our office phones will always welcome students needing to contact home, and if there is anything essential that must be communicated to our students, we will be sure to relay messages from home to our students.
Let's do this together!
Please Consider Joining Our PTSA

ITMMS Bell Schedule
Arrival & Dismissal
Safe, Respectful & Responsible
Bus Transportation
The Transportation Office will send home information regarding your child's bus stops and times. Typically, our buses arrive to our school between 7:55-8:05. This allows students to get to their lockers and then to their morning Advisory.
Walkers & Family Drop Off
When using the front circle to drop off a student, please pull up as far into the drop-off zone as possible before allowing your child to exit the car. Please pull up as close as possible to the end of the circle to ensure student safety.
All students must exit at the curb and on the passenger-side of the car. Allowing a student to exit on the driver’s side of the car is dangerous and prohibited.
When student drop-off is completed, please signal to notify oncoming drivers that you are set to merge into our second (left) lane.
Parents may not exit their vehicles during drop-off. Parking and/or waiting in the circle is not permitted during morning arrival. A constant flow of traffic must be maintained.
If short-term school business (under ten minutes) or a drop-offs requires that you leave your car, please park in the spots closest to the end of the circle. If you have a morning meeting that will exceed ten minutes, please park in our side parking lot (closest to Stop & Shop) and walk to the front.
Students who walk to school and students who are dropped off at our school are expected to arrive between 7:50-8:05.
Because the back of our school building is the location for bus drop offs, we encourage parents and guardians to use our school's front circle for drop off.
If you are dropping off at our school's back door, please be advised that this door is not open for student drop-off before 7:50. Additionally, the back door is not open for student entry after 8:10.
Dismissal
Our last class ends at 2:34. Students are dismissed at this time for family pick up, to walk home, and to get to a bus. Because our buses receive students in the back of our school, families are strongly encouraged to pick up their children in the front of our school.
Lockers & Backpacks
Backpack Safety & Lockers
With the ongoing success of our 1:1 Chromebook model, our teachers have collaborated to create supply lists that will limit the amount of binders and paper being carried by students this school year. By making this conscientious change in our supply lists, we believe the weight carried by our students throughout the school day will be significantly reduced.
Please note that lockers will be assigned during the first week of school. Our teachers and staff will work with your children to ensure that they are supported and guided throughout this process.
Additionally, we ask that you remind your child(ren) that Chromebooks must be kept in the school-issued case when not in the classroom. This requirement will help to prevent damage to this learning device and promote hallway safety and efficient hallway movement.
We are asking parents/guardians to join in our efforts to ensure that student backpacks remain light, manageable, and safe. As always, we continue to encourage our students to use their lockers to help decrease the amount of items they carry during the school day. Additionally, we will have routine notebook and locker inventories, which will allow students the opportunity to clean out binders and backpacks.
Please feel free to contact the Main Office if you have any questions. We hope you all continue to have a great summer.

The Use of Student Photos & Videos
Student Photos & Videos
Dear Island Trees Memorial Middle School Families,
Please note that during the course of the school year, photographs and video footage of students participating in school activities are taken for use in school district publications as well as in local and regional print, radio, television, the website and social media. At times, students are also identified by name when appropriate, which may accompany a photograph or video footage. Parental permission is assumed for all school related usage as stated above.
In the event that you wish to expressly withdraw permission, please forward a letter so indicating to my attention at the above below. You may also fax the letter to me at (516) 520-2168.

Getting Off to a Great Start to the Year
GETTING A GOOD START
Organize
Getting a good start at the beginning of the school year is important. Start good habits right away. Before you go to bed, organize your books and supplies and get your clothes ready for the next day so that you are not rushed in the morning.
Your Locker
At school your locker is your home away from home. It is provided for your books and clothing. You should keep your locker uncluttered and locked and keep your combination a secret. Lockers are not to be exchanged or shared with other students.
Be Friendly
Come to school each day with a positive attitude. Talk to people about their interests and they will ask you about yours. Make an effort to make new friends and work with a variety of classmates when you can.
Make Connections
Take advantage of the social activities that the middle school provides. Join clubs that are organized along the lines of your interests. Participate in school dances, field trips, Sports Night, and many other activities.
Bulldog Pride & Appropriate Dress for School
Bulldog Pride Guidelines
Each student’s appearance should reflect a positive image of our school and uphold the spirit of “Bulldog Pride”. Our school welcomes and appreciates the support of parents in upholding these guidelines.
In order to maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful learning environment, all students are expected to adhere to the following dress code guidelines:
Students should NOT wear clothing which is unsafe, dangerous or a health hazard
No outerwear of any kind shall be worn during the school day
No clothing may contain offensive or obscene language, symbols, signs, or slogans
No clothing may endorse violence, sex, gangs, or illegal substances
Attire may not be disruptive to the educational process
Airpods, headphones, Apple Watches, or any other wearable electronic devices are not permitted
Hats and hoods are not to be worn in the school building
If a student is in violation of the aforementioned guidelines he or she will be offered the opportunity to change clothing immediately or be referred to the Student Support Center. Parents/Guardians may be contacted to bring alternative attire to the school should it be required.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
ITMMS is a Nationally Designated School to Watch
A Note from National Forum
On behalf of the National Forum, I would like to offer you our heartfelt congratulations on being re-designated as a School to Watch school! What an exciting thing you have embarked upon and your recognition shows the world that your school is indeed advancing excellence in the middle-grades. We truly cannot thank you enough for your dedication to young adolescent students and strong programs, practices, and cultures that enable you to meet their needs and propel them further. You are making an impactful difference in their lives and we are grateful beyond words.
Again, we are so proud of you and your accomplishments on becoming a Schools to Watch school! Your students are so very fortunate to be part of your school and we are anxious to learn from you at the conference and through other interactions with your team. Thank you for being a leader in middle-grades education and for your strong dedication to young adolescents.
With admiration, appreciation, and respect,

We are a Nut Aware School
Please refrain from sending your child to school with snacks containing nuts. Peanut butter and other nut-related items are not sold in our cafeteria. Nut-free sections are designated in the cafeteria. If you have concerns about your child’s allergies, please contact our nurse at 520-2164.
Nutrition
To foster good health amongst our students, the following guidelines have been established:
- Energy drinks and coffee drinks are not permitted
- No food or drinks in the hallways
- No use of snack machines until lunch periods
- Delivery of fast food/take out is prohibited during the school day
Hallway Passing
Your children are reminded that they are expected to move between classes efficiently and to be safe, respectful, and responsible. All students are expected to walk on the right-side of the hallway and to walk in a manner that is respectful of others. There is no acceptable excuse for pushing or making physical contact with another student. With many students moving through our hallways during passing, pushing, running, and other similar behaviors can create a health and safety concern.
Lockers
Lockers will be assigned during the first week of school. Please be sure to encourage your child to routinely use his/her locker during the school day. There is time between classes for students to get to lockers, and I believe with greater practice and consistency, our students will see that more routine use of the locker will lessen the weight of a backpack. Those with gym lockers (student-athletes included) must lock belongings in our school-issued lockers.
Headphones & Phones
This note speaks to the power of one voice. I ask that you join me in reminding your children to remove headphones/Airpods when arriving to school in the morning. Additionally, please be sure to remind your children that phones must be fully powered down while in school. We have had great success with our "Powered Down & Put Away" policy, and we ask for your support in this area.
Smart Watches
As we continue to strengthen our Powered Down & Put Away program, we share with you that smart watches are not permitted to be worn during the school day. Any watch that allows for photography, texting, internet searches, and/or e-mail must be placed in a locker during the school day.
This year, in addition to powering down all phones and electronic devices, students will be required to store phones, Smart Watches and other electronic devices in a school-issued locker for the duration of the school day.
Social Media
How familiar are you with TikTok, Instagram, and SnapChat? Do you know who your children communicate with on these open social media platforms? Do your children go to YouTube the way you as a child may have gone to Nickelodeon, ESPN, or some other afternoon tv show?
As a father of twin sixteen year-olds, I have been forced to confront the powerful force that is social media. I would strongly encourage each of you to review the resources found below as they relate to screens and social media.
I do believe these resources will help you (us) better understand the powerful pull of social media and technology while also providing ideas for families and parents to help children navigate the digital world.
Personal Items
Please do not bring personal items, money or jewelry of value to school. It is important for you to remember that the school cannot assume responsibility for the safekeeping of your personal items should they become lost or stolen ITMMS is not responsible for loss or theft of phones, Airpods, watches, etc. No electronic equipment, aside from school-provided devices, are to be used during school. Recording and/or photographing staff and other students is strictly prohibited in school, on the bus, and at any school sponsored events.

Dignity for All Students Act
What is the Dignity for All Students Act?
The Dignity Act was signed into law on September 13, 2010 and took effect on July 1, 2012. "New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act seeks to provide the State’s public elementary and secondary school students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying on school property, a school bus and/or at a school function.
The Dignity Act also amended Section 801-a of New York State Education Law regarding instruction in civility, citizenship, and character education by expanding the concepts of tolerance, respect for others and dignity to include: an awareness and sensitivity in the relations of people, including but not limited to, different races, weights, national origins, ethnic groups, religions, religious practices, mental or physical abilities, sexual orientations, gender identity, and sexes." (NYSED.gov)
In each school, a Dignity For All Students (DASA) Coordinator is trained to handle human relations in the areas of race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (identity or expression) and sex. The DASA coordinators are available to assist families with any concerns.
