Information and Reminders
-
Interim Reports: On October 7th, the mid-first quarter progress reports were made available to students and parents via the Parent Portal. As this will be the first evaluation of the year, it is a good time to follow up on any difficulties your daughter may be having and, of course, to encourage her in her strengths. Please reach out to teachers if you have questions. IR’s are not a part of the permanent record, but a snapshot in time to let you know how she is doing.
Parents and students will be able to view the 1st Quarter Report cards, via the Parent Portal, at the end of the day on Monday, November 10th. On Thursday, November 13th, teachers will be available to talk with parents from 3:00-5:00 and 5:30–7:30. (Please note that students will be dismissed that day at 2:30 and that there will be a 1/2 hour dinner break at 5PM for the faculty.) In the meantime, do not hesitate to call or email a teacher or an administrator if you have concerns or just want to be sure things are “on track” relative to your daughter’s academic achievement.

Physics Honors Class
In Physics Honors, students explored how scientists measure the seemingly immeasurable! When a quantity is too small, fast, or distant to measure directly, indirect methods must be used.
Using trigonometric functions (SOH CAH TOA) and tools such as strings, metersticks, and protractors, students calculated their classmates’ heights indirectly and compared their results to direct measurements. They analyzed their accuracy by calculating percent error and discussed which methods yielded the best results.
Through collaboration on Padlet, students shared their findings, explored sources of error, and provided constructive feedback to improve each other’s reasoning.
This hands-on, kinesthetic lab gave students practical experience applying trigonometry to physics — skills they’ll later use in vector addition, components, and force analysis.
Student reflections:
-
“We didn’t need to measure the angle for Scenario #3 because we had the other two sides and could use the Pythagorean Theorem.”
-
“Our percent error was high when using the string—maybe we pulled it too tight!”
-
“Scenario #1 gave us the largest error. Measuring the angle on the ground with a printed protractor was tricky.”
Holy Rosary Prayer Service
October is the month of the Rosary, and yesterday our Preston community came together for a beautiful schoolwide prayer service. Together, we prayed the Rosary, reflecting on the Luminous Mysteries — the Baptism of Jesus, the Wedding Feast at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist.
What made this service especially meaningful — and uniquely Preston — was the way we celebrated our community’s diversity. Faculty, staff, and students who speak more than one language led us in the Hail Mary in their native or second languages, including Italian, Spanish, Latin, French, Vietnamese, ASL, German, Russian, Polish, Bulgarian, and Malagasy, among others. Between each of these, we prayed the Hail Mary together in English, uniting our voices as one faith community.
It was a truly moving experience and a beautiful reminder of the richness and unity that define Preston High School.
