Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh! Happy St Patrick's Day to everyone.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend! I look forward to seeing some of our students in the Malahide Parade.

We have had a busy few weeks in school between an Irish Inspection, our wonderful Grandparent's Day, World Book Day and Seachtain na Gaeilge! Our second classes are working hard with their teachers to prepare for their First Confessions.

Our Parents Association are doing marvelous work with their fundraising drive for a new yard! It is a massive undertaking and a project that all the children will benefit from so I really encourage everyone to support them through buying a ticket for the Mega Raffle or attending the inaugural PJP Lunch. I hope to see many of you on the 28th March in Old Street.

Fresh from the Christmas break, the 6th classes dove straight into the excitement of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. Their projects explored a diverse range of fascinating topics, including the effects of virtual reality on motion sickness, how our brains process taste, a comparison of store-brand versus name-brand products, the science behind rollercoasters, and the impact colours have on our mood.

Below are some snapshots from the event, along with a few firsthand accounts from the students, sharing their experiences and insights from the exhibition.

The Science Behind Rollercoasters By Michael Conway and Robbie Hayes.

Our class went to BT Young Scientists on

January 10th, 2025. Our project was the science behind Roller Coasters. This is what we did.

· We explored how Roller Coasters stay on their tracks, how they go over ramps and how they go around loop-the-loops.

· We researched the history of Roller Coasters, how they have changed over time and we looked at different rollercoasters around the world.

· We investigated how they convert potential energy into kinetic energy as well as the role of inertia and how Newton's third law affects them.

zoom_out_map

· We constructed a rollercoaster using K'nex. We also built a Paper Roller Coaster and even a Roller Coaster Made of Lollipop Sticks.

To demonstrate the effects of centripetal force, we swung a water bucket around our heads and were fascinated to see that the water would stay inside the bucket.

Even though our class did go to BT YS we only competed in the primary science fair. But we still thoroughly enjoyed it as it is a great chance for students to dive into exciting science projects and really stretch their creativity. Even though there was no winner we still had great fun there. It is about learning new things, thinking outside the box, and working together to solve problems. These skills are especially important in science, but also in everyday life.

We look forward to even more exciting projects in the future, and we hope all our classmates will be participating in next year’s secondary school competition.

Taste Test Showdown: Store Brand Vs Name Brand Food Taste Test Showdown: Store Brand Vs Name Brand Food

This year our class went to BT young scientist in the RDS.

This is a recap of what happened.

The first thing we had to do was decide on a question for our project. After a lot of discussion we narrowed it down to two options. The first was: "How does sugar affect our brains?" The second was: "Name Brand Vs Store Brand. Is there a Difference? In the end we decided to go with the second option.

Next, we began our experiment. Ten pupils were blindfolded and sent outside while others prepared the test items. Once everything was ready, the ten blindfolded pupils were brought back into the classroom and the testing began.

We tested five different foods: Cornflakes, Cheese and Onion crisps, Kit Kats, Orange juice and Chocolate Digestives.

The results of the taste tests proved interesting.

The first tester scored 2 out of 5, correctly identifying Cornflakes and Kit Kat.

The second tester got 1 out of 5, only getting KitKat right.

The third tester got 2 out of 5, getting Kit Kat and Chocolate Digestives right.

The fourth tester amazed us with a perfect score: 5 out of 5!

The fifth tester got 1 out of 5, only getting the cheese and onions crisps right.

The sixth tester also got 1 out of 5. They got chocolate digestives right.

The seventh tester got 4 out of 5 - they missed the chocolate digestives.

The eighth tester got 3 out of 5, getting Kit Kat ,Cornflakes and Orange juice right.

The ninth tester got 1 out of 5 they got Kit Kat right.

And last but not least the tenth tester got 1 out of 5, correctly identifying Cornflakes.

With the science fair set for the 10th of January, we didn’t have much time to prepare. We printed off the survey and the PowerPoint so we were nearly there. With those ready, we printed off pictures and arranged them on a huge yellow sheet of paper to complete our display.

When the day of the fair came, we were prepared. We got a luxurious bus down to the RDS and it took around 45 minutes to get there. When we got there it started with bad news. Another class from a different school stole our stand! Luckily we got another stand and the day began.

There was lots of stuff including a food court, a lot of stands made by TY, stands set up by businesses that gave out freebies and an RTE podcast with Laura Fox. Judges and TV crew came around asking about everybody’s stands, a few people from our year even got on RTE! (Though we didn’t.)

The food court had loads of different companies including Camile, Eddie Rockets, an ice cream van and many others. (The spice bags were 15 euro!!!!)

There were loads of stands including a VR stand, a Formula 1 stand where you could race for prizes on an Xbox, a stand where you could lie on a bed of nails, quiz stands and much more.

At the end of the fair a guy came around and gave us a plaque. Then we packed up and went back to the school. It was a great day and we hope to go again someday. We would totally recommend for other classes to try this.

BT Young Scientist

BT Young Scientist

This was our day at BT Young Scientists. We got on to the bus and left at approximately 8:20AM. About 30-40 minutes later we all arrived at the RDS. We were in smaller area to one side of the main exhibition area. The main arena was huge! When we had finished getting our stand set up, people started coming over. Our stand was getting a lot of attention with the VR motion sickness experience. During the day, we took it in turns being in charge of the stall – answering questions, using the VR and speaking with the judges. Our class was even interviewed by News2Day and we made it on TV!

A lot of big companies and Tech firms were there on the day and were giving away free stuff. If you wanted something to eat there was a selection of food places. They had Eddie Rockets, Ferrall catering and even more. If you are into space, there was this impressive guy who talked about space. There was something for everyone to do like you could go into the 98fm studio where they were on the radio live and see how they did all the stuff. The Deposit Return people were there too. They showed you how the bottles get recycled and how the machines work.

Overall BT Young Scientist was such a great opportunity for people who want to become a scientist when they are older or even if you just want to show off your projects. It was not only 6th class there - people from secondary schools were there too. There were some cool inventions from the people in secondary school. The winners made and app called ACT what it does is it helps the guards/emergency services to find out where the location of the emergency is. The food was amazing I got some curry chips, and it was worth the eight euro! The people there were fantastic and super friendly to everyone.

Thank you guys for reading our BT Young Scientists' newsletter.

BT Young Scientist Fair by Fionn, Finn, Harry, Conor O’S and Eamonn

On Friday 10th of January, our year had the opportunity to showcase the projects we had been working on throughout the school year in the RDS Arena.

We got up nice and early to get a coach to the RDS. When we arrived, we set up our stand for the busy day ahead. Our stand was about taste and flavour. We used skittles to test our theory. We discovered lots about our topic. We had to take shifts to present our project to all the people that were walking around.

During our free time, we had the opportunity to wander around and test out all the exciting projects and had some wonderful food in the huge food court. In our experiment, we discovered that only a few people that we tested got the answer correct. There were so many different interactive stands; there was even a live RTE podcast Aswell as many free amenities like bags, bottles and hats.

Time flew by and before we knew it, we had to go home. It was a great experience, and we will be looking forward to the next trip in a few years time.

ESB Science Blast 2025 ESB Science Blast 2025

On March 3rd, we returned to the RDS, this time with the 5th classes, who showcased their curiosity and amazing scientific knowledge at the Science Blast exhibition. To take part, each class began with a simple question and delved into the science behind it. The questions were incredibly diverse and thought-provoking: Does Antibacterial Soap Kill All Germs?, What Do Our Dreams Mean?, Can Exercise Sharpen Your Mind?, Why Don't We Fall Out of Rollercoasters?, Auroras Unveiled: What Powers Nature's Neon Lights?, and Fear Factor: How to Deal with Phobias. The children had a fantastic day presenting their projects, exploring others’ work, playing interactive games, watching science shows, and much more. It was a joy to see them so engaged, curious, and having such a wonderful time.

💥 Science Blast 💥

Science blast was amazing! We took the bus to Science Blast. It was a long drive but it was worth the experience. All the schools got off the bus and headed inside bursting with excitement.

Once everyone got inside the teacher told us we could go around and do any game you want to play. The teacher then hung the project up and gave everyone a time to be at the stand to see the judge.

Me and my bestie Riessa ran off but then we were told to slow down. There were tons of games and the first one we tried was the Strike a Light where we had to press the buttons that popped up as fast as we could. We almost beat the highest score😃. There was a game where you had to step inside a tube and get as many balls in the bucket as you could. We didnt do that one because we would have looked so crazy 😜. There was a Protein Game were we had to try guess which food had the most protein in it. We went up against a different school and of course me and Riessa lost. Other activities included lying down on nails, a world game where we had to answer world wide questions , a weather game, playing with a VR set, a place to watch real life science 🧫 and many more.

Then it was me, Riessa, Grace, and Annabelle's turn to go see the judge. She asked all kinds of questions like, 'How did you come up with your science blast question?'

And we answered “We voted for a question from a few of the students' suggestions and the most votes got Does anti-bacterial soap kill all germs 🦠” T

hen she asked us, 'Does it kill all germs?'

We said “no it doesn’t” then she asked us, 'Was it fun?' And 'Did you think it was worth it ?' and we all said yes. She asked lots more questions and we answered them all in no time.

Then after all the fun we had to go home I really enjoyed the day and I would definitely come back if I could. I hope our school will keep on doing Science Blast for the other classes as it was really fun and exciting. And I loved the way all the workers were so nice.

Grandparents Day Grandparents Day

zoom_out_map

Grandparents’ Day was organised by the 6thclass students of Ms. Kieran’s class. Unfortunately, the original Grandparents’ Day, which was organised as part of Catholic Schools Week, had to be postponed due to Storm Eowyn on Friday the 24th of January. It was then moved to Friday the 7th of February.

In preparation for the day, the classes were very busy putting up art around the school, decorating their classrooms and making other little sentimental bits of art for the grandparents to take home. Along with all the art the students were also preparing songs and performances for when grandparents visit the classrooms. There were a few singers and dancers from 5th and 6th class who dazzled grandparents with their moves and voices in the hall. The night before Grandparents’ Day was a busy one as all the sixth-class students had to bake or buy treats for the following day. That morning, all the treats for the Grandparents were plated up.

As well as treats, there were teas and coffees to enjoy. Shortly after the Grandparents arrived, there was a lovely prayer service before they went to their grandchild’s classroom. If there was any Irish to be spoken it was at the Bord Gaeilge which was set up by PJPs very own Coiste na Gaeilge. Grandparents from each year level came and went until it was almost the end of the day. After they all left, there were still plenty of treats that had not been used so we sent them to Talbot Lodge Nursing Home.

We would like to say Thank You to Fr. Martin and Ronan who took time out to come along on the day. A big thank you to the grandparents, pupils, teachers and SNAs who helped make the day as special and memorable as it was.

Girls begin Fingal League campaign with a win

There was glorious sunshine in St. Maur’s GAA Club on Tuesday as the girls began the campaign to defend the Senior Fingal League title with an opening round fixture against Rush NS. Ms. Carr has a strong panel this year who are all worthy of their position in the team. The game began with 4 wides for PJP. We were knocking at the door but couldn’t get in. Finally, after 6 minutes, Corissa Moloney opened the scoring with a point from distance. If only there were two-pointers in the Fingal League! Rush tried to fire back but Kate Foran was resolute in her defending, turning over the ball and launching an attack. The ball ended up in Clodagh’s hands, who saw the keeper off her line and excellently lobbed in a goal from 25 yards out. Izzy added her first point, followed by a goal after an excellent pass by Julia Maloney. Allessia Sorgento won the resulting kickout and sent the ball straight back over the ball to keep the lead increasing. Ellie Osborne was getting increasingly into the game. Her passing and movement were phenomenal as he passed one way and moved the other, setting up a fine point for herself. The PJP attacking pressure was showing as we were awarded several frees. Clodagh Sheedy stepped up and comfortably slotted one over the bar. From the Rush kickout, PJP were surprised with a breakaway attack in over our full back line where Rush scored their first goal of the game. PJP would not let this affect them and after a smooth passing movement, Clodagh added another point. Isabelle Harvey and Clodagh Sheedy exchanged scores before Rush rounded off the half with a point from a free to leave the score at 2-7 to 1-1.

Rush began the second half quickly with another point from a free. Immediately after, Abby Roche’s long distance shot dropped short and was gathered up by Julia Maloney who smashed the ball into the roof of the net leaving the keeper with no chance. Ellie Osborne scored a lovely point from a tight angle minutes later before a Rush rampage of 3 points in a row. With the final score and goal of the game, full-back turned full-forward Niamh Early rounded out a comprehensive 4-10 to 1-5 victory for PJP. Their next match is next week where the girls will look to build on this opening round success.

KLAASKICKZ SOCCER ACADEMY Jan 2025 KLAASKICKZ SOCCER ACADEMY Jan 2025

WEEK 1

On the first day of Klaasskickz our class was very excited.

We started off the day with a warm up: we got a ball and kicked it around a small circle. When Cian (our coach) blew a whistle we had to leave the ball and run to the closest white cone. Then Cian told us to do some skills such as stepovers, cruyff turns, body faints and ball rolls. It was so much fun and our class loved it.

Then we started getting competitive. We split up into two different teams, the Red Team and the Blue Team, then we started playing the game: Cian put loads of balls in the middle of the ‘pitch’ and we had to sprint to the middle (where the balls where), get one and dribble it back to our team. The Red Team won the first round then The Blue Team won the next two rounds making them the champions. Sadly that was the end of our first session but we were all eager for the next week.

WEEK 2

We started off the football with a new coach. Cian was out sick so Conor was helping him out and being our coach for the week.

We started off with a warmup, we passed the ball to our partner who was standing on the other side of a set of cones, then we had to run to another set of cones that was a different colour to the one before that and we did that for a minute or two and whoever had passed the ball to their partner the most they won.

Then we split into four teams. They were quite fair. After a while, Conor blew the whistle and we all went into a circle then, after a suspenseful pause, he announced that Sean was player of the week. We clapped and then walked back to our classroom.

Week 3

This week was quite cold so we jumped right in with a jog around the pitch.

Then we had a bit of a kickabout before we got into our first game of Red Light Green Light. We played that for about ten or fifteen minutes. Then we split into teams 2 boys team and 2 girls teams. The boys match finished five-four and the girls finished one-nil.

Then it was finally time for Conor to announce the player of the week. After another tense pause he announced that Lydia was the player of the week! Everyone was very happy for her as we walked back to our classroom.

Week 4

We started off the week with a game. When Conor called out an item of clothing such as football boots, school jumper or jacket the people that had the item of clothing had to run to the other side of an elongated pitch and if Conor caught you with a ball or his hand then you where on as well. We played this twice once just sprinting and the other time dribbling a ball across the pitch.

After a while, we got into the same teams as last week and we played the matches again the boys score was 3,1 and the girls score was 1,1.

Then as per usual Conor called us all into a circle and announced the players of the week but there was a twist on it: we had two people a girl and a boy. The girl was Aoife and the boy was James. We walked back to our classroom once again and saw our reading buddies.

Week 5

Sadly, this was the last week of Klaaskicks.

We started off with a race. We had three attempts. The first time Edward fell over, the next attempt Louis fell over, then on our final attempt we got 8.42 seconds and we got the fastest time of the day. Then we did the clothing race again. It was great fun and Naomi and Rowan won it.

After a while, we moved onto a world cup we had 4 teams India, Holland, Chad and Mexico. The whole point of the world cup was to earn points for your team, you could get points by standing in a straight line, winning a match, not conceding in a match or by doing the race at the end of each match to get back into our lines in a nice, neat line.

At the end of the session India had 14, Holland had 13, Chad had 0 and 8 points so that meant that India had won.

Everyone was quite disappointed that the Klaaskickz was over but they couldn't stay forever.

Boys begin Fingal League defence

Gaelscoil Brian Boriomhe have provided strong competition to us in the Fingal League in recent years including in last year's final where a drawn match resulted in both schools sharing the trophy. We knew that we had to start the campaign with a win to put us in the best position moving forward. The boys knew it wouldn't be an easy match but were well up for the challenge. GSBB opened to scoring in Broomfield and held their lead for a couple of minutes. Max Dunnion's effort to pull us level went wide. From the resulting kickout, Tiarnan Hartnett won possession and played a swift handpass to Max Dunnion who was fouled. Tom Rochford slotted the ball over the bar with ease to get PJP on the scoreboard. The game was end to end as the backs for both teams kept their opposition at bay. Andrew Kennedy was impressive at corner back as he made four tackles in a row followed by a block on a GSBB shot. GSBB kept the pressure on and scored three points in a row as they began to pull away. Tiarnan scored a free from distance to reduce the deficit. Conor O'Sullivan was busy at wing-back supporting attacks. He made an excellent run straight for the GSBB goal, soloing almost 50 yards up the pitch. He handed it off to Max who passed onto Ruben Lynch who made no mistake in front of goal. GSBB returned to the other end with a shot on goal which was tapped over by Ronan Mollahan who had volunteered to go in goal for the game. The game looked to be level at half-time before the final kick of the half from GSBB found the back of the net. We trailed 1-5 to 1-2 as the referee blew for the end of the half.

PJP would be playing with a massive wind for the second half. The GSBB goalkeeper was being pinned back by the wind. Tiarnan once again won the ball from a kickout and placed his shot through the keeper's legs to give us the perfect start to the half and to level the game. Tiarnan was massively in the game at this stage and was winning several frees. George O'Brien was more than happy to add a score from the free. The momentum was fully with PJP at this point as Ruben Lynch, Adam Walsh-Bookey, and George added more points. Ruben finished the game with one final point for PJP. In total, PJP added 1-7 in the second half without reply for GSBB for a final score of 2-9 to 1-5. The boys are now in pole position for the rest of the campaign.

Peace Proms Choir

This year the peace proms choir and the teachers, including Ms. Byrne and Ms. McKenna worked hard to create a beautiful performance in the RDS. We had a great day. A couple of months before our big day we had one rehearsal with the conductor Greg. On the day we got a bus from the school to the RDS. Then our parents came to watch us on our big day. There were singers, dancers and a full orchestra for the concert. Overall, it was a really great day!

Nature Studies with Mouse Nature Studies with Mouse

Third class had thousands of tiny visitors this week as Mouse brought in frog spawn to show to the classes. It was fascinating to see just how much of it there can be in one place. We also learned about the life cycle of a frog and how the frogspawn grows and changes into tadpoles and eventually into frogs!
