The Town of Sunnyvale has named Interim Chief William "Bill" Vegas as its new police chief.

“I am pleased to announce Bill Vegas' promotion as the new Sunnyvale police chief," said Town Manager Jeff Jones. "While serving as the interim chief, he exhibited leadership and drive as both the Town and police department faced numerous challenges this past year. Chief Vegas’ extensive experience in law enforcement has been an asset to the Sunnyvale community and will help guide our growing police department.”

Mayor Saji George said, “Chief Vegas truly cares about the police department and the Sunnyvale community, and it shows. The safety of our community is a top priority, and we are confident Chief Vegas has the skills and experience necessary to get the job done.”

Chief Vegas began his career in 1991 as a police officer with the Heath Police Department. Chief Vegas has held many positions throughout his career, such as police officer, school resource officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and interim chief of police with multiple cities, including Heath, Royse City, Murphy, and most recently Sunnyvale.

Chief Vegas holds a Master Peace Officer license and is a certified TCOLE Instructor and Mental Health Officer. He is a graduate of the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration, as well as the Leadership Command College. Chief Vegas came to Sunnyvale in 2020 as a patrol sergeant and his leadership skills provided him the opportunity to progress through the ranks. He has served Sunnyvale in many capacities as a patrol sergeant, detective sergeant, police lieutenant, and interim chief of police since April 2023.

Project updates for Week of Oct. 30

Work is underway on $16.4 million worth of road improvement projects recently approved by the Sunnyvale Town Council.

Phase 2B and 2C include the repair and overlay of the following sections of asphalt roadway (dates are subject to change). This week's activity is scheduled to include:

  • Due to the wet weather this week, striping work on Tripp and Jobson Roads will be completed during the week of 10/30.
  • Town East Boulevard from Collins Road to Tower Place - Westbound is underway.
  • East Fork (first Phase 2C project) between Gloria and Tripp is underway (southbound side). Please plan on using Collins for traveling southbound through the Town.
  • North Collins Road from Town East Boulevard to Barnes Bridge Road is scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 30 (southbound side). Please plan on using Barnes Bridge/Polly/Town East in order to bypass the construction zone impacting southbound Collins.

The latest updates and a preview of upcoming activities are available at TownofSunnyvale.org/RoadProjects. Construction schedules can change with short notice. We appreciate your patience.

Mail Service - Construction operations could temporarily disrupt US Postal Service deliveries to some mailboxes in the construction area. The Supervisor of Delivery at the Mesquite Post Office confirmed that undelivered mail would be held at the Mesquite Post Office, 120 E. Grubb Dr. Post office hours can be found at their website.

Trash Service - For residents along the construction route, please make sure your trash containers are out by 7 a.m. on your assigned day. If the lane in front of your home is closed, please place your container across the street.

Sunnyvale Survey - Safety is a Community Strength Sunnyvale Survey - Safety is a Community Strength

chart that illustrates public satisfaction with safety in Sunnyvale
zoom_out_map

Earlier this year, more than 700 Sunnyvale residents shared their insights about our community through a "livability" survey.

Safety and safety-related services received strong ratings from residents, with about 9 in 10 giving excellent or good ratings to the overall feeling of safety in the Town.

A similar proportion felt that safety was essential or very important for the Town to focus on in the coming two years, receiving the highest level of importance out of all of the facets of community livability.

Residents generally feel safe in Sunnyvale, with roughly 9 in 10 reporting feeling very or somewhat safe in their neighborhood during the day and in the commercial area during the day. About 8 in 10 reported feeling safe from violent crime, property crime, fire, flood or other natural disasters.

Safety services received strong ratings from residents as well, with fire services receiving high marks from 9 in 10 residents. Animal control received positive ratings from about 8 in 10 residents, scoring higher than national averages. A similar proportion offered positive reviews of ambulance or emergency medical services, crime prevention, and police services, which were all on par with the national benchmarks.

These results were part of the National Community Survey. The full report is available at TownofSunnyvale.org/Survey.
