In my Superintendent Entry Plan, linked below, you will see that one of my Pillars of Focus is Family and Community Engagement. My goal is to enhance engagement with our parents, our staff, our students, and the greater community. This month I began holding listen and learn sessions with the community and staff. These sessions are designed to allow for honest and comfortable exchanges so that I can learn what you think is working, and what we need to do better. This will help us create inclusive opportunities for stakeholder involvement, improve communication channels, and build strong partnerships that support student success and well-being. Ultimately we want the best schools for the students in Willis ISD. And we want your help to build that.

DR. JAMES HOSTS FIRST ENGAGE & EXCHANGE SESSION DR. JAMES HOSTS FIRST ENGAGE & EXCHANGE SESSION

On Monday, October 21, Dr. James held her inaugural session, "Engage & Exchange with Dr. James." This event served as an opportunity for community members to familiarize themselves with her Superintendent Entry Plan, a comprehensive initiative designed to address the district's needs and goals. During the session, Dr. James outlined her vision for the future and detailed the key areas she aims to focus on for improvement.

Additionally, the gathering included an open forum at the end, encouraging attendees to actively participate by sharing their insights, ideas, and concerns via ThoughtExchange. Community members were invited to share their ideas on significant issues the district should address and also propose potential solutions.

Thank you to everyone who attended and shared their valuable insights! Together, we’re shaping a stronger future for our district. Stay tuned for more sessions and continued opportunities to make your voice heard!

Take a peak into the classroom and see what Willis ISD students have been doing for the

past few weeks!

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our Paws of PRIDE program - a special initiative to recognize staff who go above and beyond in their daily roles.

Alongside Superintendent Dr. James, we created the acronym PRIDE.

This acronym stands for:

  • Passionate
  • Responsive
  • Innovative
  • Dynamic
  • Empathetic

These five values reflect what we expect from our Wildkat staff. Utilizing a form, staff and community members can send personalized appreciation cards to any staff member who they believe is going above and beyond in their duties.

On October 7, Rachael Tedder was recognized as the district's first recipient of a Paws of Pride appreciation card. District administrators visited Stubblefield Academy to surprise her and invite her to the upcoming board meeting. Ms. Tedder was nominated by Lt. Richard Durbin, the Director of Security, for being dynamic and responsive.

Her nomination read:

"When I found out about the new Paws of Pride recognition program that has been created, I immediately thought of Rachael Tedder. Rachael has her own job and responsibilities but goes out of her way to assist my SROs with anything they need. Rachael places our orders for parts and even takes the time to research what we need. Although it is not her responsibility, she never complains and is always willing to go the extra mile. She is an asset to this district, and her professionalism and dedication is unmatched."

WILLIS ISD BOND RESULTS

Willis ISD voters have rejected all three propositions of the bond election that appeared on the November 2024 ballot. The bond package, designed to address facility needs aligned with district growth and student programming, was proposed in response to demographic forecasts predicting significant enrollment increases in the coming years. As a result, plans for the Student Activity Center, Athletic Complex & Stadium, and Aquatic Center will not move forward at this time.

The district thanks all voters for their participation and will continue seeking ways to responsibly address the needs of our students and growing community.

Moving forward, Willis ISD is excited to focus on several important developments ahead. We are opening Middle School #3 in August 2025, Elementary #7 in fall of 2026, and preparing for the construction of our Ninth Grade Center at Willis High School to meet the demands of our growing student population. The district is committed to forward-thinking strategic planning that prioritizes both the improvement of student outcomes and the unique needs of our rapidly expanding community. These projects are vital steps in our journey to provide high-quality, future-ready learning environments for every student.

Kyle Hoegemeyer stated, “As Board President of Willis ISD, I know I speak for all of the school board members when I say that we know our families are deeply invested in ensuring that all students in Willis ISD have access to facilities that support a complete and well-rounded educational experience. While we are disappointed that the community did not approve this bond, we respect and appreciate the voice of our voters that showed in larger numbers. We remain committed to working with all stakeholders to address the ongoing needs of our district in a fiscally responsible manner. Moving forward, we will continue to evaluate and prioritize how we can best serve our students within the existing resources, and we welcome further dialogue on these essential initiatives.”

“Having recently joined Willis ISD as Superintendent, I am encouraged by the community’s engagement and passion for the future of our schools," said Kimberley James. "We are fortunate to serve a district that values growth and educational quality, and while the bond results are not what we hoped, our commitment to serving our students, families, and staff remains unchanged. We will work diligently to seek alternative paths to meet the demands of our growing district while staying true to the core values and high standards that define Willis ISD.”

The following staff members were hired between September 30 and November 4. Welcome to the district - we are so happy to have each and every one of you!
