Principal's Message

November is upon us, which means the first part of the year will be wrapping up soon! The last day of the trimester is Tuesday, November 22nd. Students have done a fantastic job readjusting to the routines of school - staff is so proud of how they have met the high expectations we have here! This month is a short one and next month will go quickly too, due to the hectic nature of the holiday season. Student council has a few fun things planned for students and we'll have a "read-in" day in December. Students will take their second round of STAR tests in English and Math early next month - it will be good to see progress made after the first few months of school. Best wishes to all of you for a relaxing Thanksgiving break with loved ones!

Chromebook Issues

Our tech department is seeing a lot of broken spacebars on chromebooks due to students playing games. If a student's spacebar is broken, they will be charged $35 for a new keyboard because a single key, like the spacebar, cannot be replaced.

Dress for the Weather

Middle school students go outside every day for recess unless it is raining or the wind chill is dangerously cold. It is important for students to dress appropriately for the weather. Students should wear coats, hats, and mittens as well as appropriate footwear.

Bullying Report

Although we do our best to monitor student interactions, there are times that we miss things. Students who feel they are being bullied should report incidents to school staff immediately by filling out a form on the MS Office Google Classroom page. Once a report is filled out, Mrs. Denure will speak to the bully to issue a warning. Incidents that occur after the warning will be handled according to guidelines set forth in the school handbook.

Fun Times in Math 5

In 5th grade, we started the year learning about place value, from exponents and powers of 10, to writing numbers in word form, standard form, and expanded form, to decimals to the thousandths, to rounding and comparing decimals. We recently learned how to use models and strategies to add and subtract decimals, using mental math, estimating, and partial sums and differences.

To make all this learning extra fun, my 5th graders were able to choose a project to do that would tie in these concepts. Their choices were a Manatee project, a Base-10 Block project, a Solar System project, a Crocodile and Alligator project, a Theme Park project, a Plan Your Meal project, and a Travel Diary project.

The Manatee Poster project practiced writing all the fact numbers in word form, standard form and expanded form. The Base-10 Block project was designing a game that focused on whole numbers or decimal numbers. The Solar System project was researching and rounding distances. The Crocodile and Alligator project was measuring to the hundredths place, comparing numbers, and finding differences. The Theme Park project was comparing decimals in the form of money. The Plan Your Meal project gave you cost and calorie requirements for your meal to fit into, while choosing 3 or more items. The Travel Diary project was measuring distances from one city to another and making comparisons with the estimates and actual mileage.

We spent about 3-4 days working on these projects in class and then presented them to our class. During this time my students were engaged, smiling, giggling and enjoying what they were learning, which made me quite happy! I was able to capture some pictures of projects in progress and the finished projects as well. My students are already looking forward to the next time we get to work on projects.

Athletic Event Supervision

MS boys' basketball has begun and HS basketball begins soon - this is a reminder that middle school students attending after school athletic events should be supervised by a guardian or other adult. School staff on duty at after school events do their best to make sure everyone has fun while being safe, but this can be a challenge if the number of students far exceeds the number of staff. Please do not drop children off at athletic events if you are unable to attend along with them.

Vaping

Vaping is a concerning issue at the middle school. It is important to be on the lookout for signs that your child might be vaping. This article from drugfree.org is a good resource. Some of the signs to look for include: equipment that looks like a flash drive, gel jars or small tools, online purchases or unusual packages, scent from scented vapes, increased thirst, decreased caffeine use or nose bleeds.

Virtual Parenting Group

Homework Club

Homework help is available every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:20-3:50. If completing work at home is challenging, encourage your child to stay for help at the end of the day. Interested students should listen to announcements to find out where Homework Club is being held and report to that location at the end of the school day.

Standards Based Learning

As students begin to complete practice assignments, teachers will enter them into PowerSchool. Practice assignments are not graded, but MUST be completed. You will see "0" and "missing" if your child has not completed an assignment. Quizzes, tests and projects will receive a score of 4-3-2-1-0. It is important to check your child's assignments and quiz/test/project scores regularly, as grades do affect sport and club eligibility. If you need help with PowerSchool, please contact Mrs. Denure at denuam@pasdwi.org
