Principal's Message
January 22, 2024
Dear Families,
We strongly believe in the importance of children spending time outdoors every day. Taking a break, breathing in fresh air, and connecting with friends from different classes contribute significantly to their overall well-being alongside their academic efforts. Unlike some schools, we continue to prioritize and support recess for middle-grade students.
Acknowledging the recent cold weather, I want to take this opportunity to outline our procedure for determining outdoor recess. Our administrative team, in consultation with our nurses, assesses the "Real Feel" temperature to make informed decisions about whether to have outdoor recess or stay indoors. Here's the scale we follow:
- If the real feel temperature is above 20 degrees, we go outside.
- If the real feel temperature is below 10 degrees, we opt to stay indoors.
- If the real feel temperature falls between 10 and 20 degrees, we make a judgment call based on prevailing weather conditions.
We appreciate your cooperation in reminding your children to dress appropriately for the weather. As we move into the upcoming week, the weather forecast indicates a considerable improvement in temperatures.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
Yours in partnership,
Joel Bates,
Principal

Florence Sawyer School Spelling Bees
At this point, all students who have qualified for the School-Wide Spelling Bees have been notified and provided with a list of words to study in preparation for their Bees. Invites were based on each student's scores on a classroom qualifying test. As in the past, there will be two Bee events.
The first one, the Elementary School Bee, will be held on January 26 at 11:00 AM in the FSS Library. This is for students in grades 3-5. There will be an after school practice session the day before, January 25, in the library. That session runs from after school until 4:30 with the purpose of familiarizing students with the procedure of a Bee if this is their first time. That meeting is optional. The winner of the 3-5 Bee will be invited to participate in the middle school event.
The Middle School Spelling Bee will be held on January 30 at 6:30 in the FSS auditorium. The study session, like the elementary one, will be held the day before, January 29, after school until 4:30. The winner of this School-Wide Spelling Bee will need to take an online eliminator on February 27. If our champion speller makes the cut, they will be invited to the Regional Spelling Bee held March 19 in Lynn, Massachusetts. The winner of the Regional gets invited to the National Spelling Bee in Washington DC.

Girls on the Run 2024
Dear parents/guardians of FSS’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders!
My name is Jennifer Hubacz and I am the head coach of Girls on The Run for Florence Sawyer School. Girls on the Run is an after-school program for girls in grades 3-5, aimed at helping students make positive social connections, increase physical activity, & learn life skills. Physical activity & social-emotional curriculum are woven into two sessions per week, culminating in a celebratory non-competitive 5k run/walk event. Curriculum themes include: turning negative self-talk into positive self-talk, understanding emotions, standing up for self and others, making and maintaining healthy relationships, and making an impact on the community. No prior running experience is necessary – the program is accessible to all girls regardless of fitness level or physical ability. Stretching & running activities are woven into lessons by trained staff coaches. The program runs on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at FSS from dismissal until 4:30pm, beginning the week of March 19th through the 5k at Polar Park on June 2nd. FSS staff members Jennifer (Rogers) Hubacz, Stacey Southard, Evelyn Cubero, and Megan Gurley will be leading the program this year. Registration, which includes all fees for the season, is $195. This year, Girls On The Run are running a lottery registration and it will be open starting January 1, 2024 and run until the end of day on February 2, 2024. “Winners” will be announced by the end of day on Monday, February 5, 2024. Participants will be notified by email that they have secured a spot on a team. If there were more than 18 girls registered for the lottery and they did not "win", they will receive an email from Girls On The Run notifying them that they are on the waitlist. You will not be charged until you “win” a spot on February 5, 2024. Please see the attached PDF and links below for more information.
