Hello Watertown High School Students and Families,

I'm saddened to write of a Zoom intrusion during the live stream of our hockey game this evening. The link to the game was shared with Watertown parents/guardians directly, however, the two schools we were competing against received the link and posted it to their public Twitters in an attempt to encourage their students and families to tune in. During the stream, a small group of people took over the screen, drawing and saying inappropriate words, and showing images of the KKK. Thanks to the quick action of some Watertown viewers, we were able to get video of the incident and will be working with the other schools involved to try to find the perpetrators. Given that the link was shared to very few Watertown families and not shared on our social media, we are looking into the possibility that the perpetrators were not from Watertown High School and instead were outsiders that received the link from the Twitter posts. Other schools in the area reported similar intrusions to their live streams around the same time. We are trying to determine if this was a coordinated effort.

Each incident like this is a sobering reminder of the work left to be done on the part of all young people and those who educate them, to realize the destructive effects of behavior like this. These incidents make people feel unsafe, unsettled, and marginalized. If it is found that the perpetrators of these cowardly acts are members of the Watertown High School community, rest assured that we will move forward with strict discipline in accordance with our code of conduct. We appreciate the up-stander behavior on the part of numerous Watertown parents and guardians that witnessed the live stream and reported it to us, recorded it for us, and shared our anger and disgust.

Students and families that would like to speak to a member of our counseling staff to discuss what happened should contact their guidance counselor or the main office.
