The Board of Education approved four course proposals that were vetted through the Teaching and Learning Council. One will be implemented next year as it is a purchased curriculum that is ready to begin. The other three courses will go through a development process next school year to ensure they are ready to implement in 2025-26.

For 2024-25:

  • Microsoft Office Suite - will be the third course in the Microsoft Technology Pathway. It leads to Microsoft certification and proficiency that can articulate transferable credit to Prairie State College.

For 2025-26:
  • Class Piano - this is a semester-long elective in music open to all students regardless of skill level.

  • Unified Theater - is an inclusive class where students with and without disabilities partner to support each other in their learning. This course allows for a three-year pathway in Theater.

  • Heritage Spanish - for students from homes where Spanish is the primary language and those who are Spanish native first speakers but moved away from that environment. The course advances heritage speakers at an advanced level that better meets their needs. It also fulfills the Transitional Bilingual Education state requirement that is in place when a school has 20 or more native speakers in a language.

Estimated Tax Levy at 5% Estimated Tax Levy at 5%

The Board of Education approved the estimated tax levy at 5%. Chief Business Official Dr. Lawrence Cook shared that the District is limited to growth in its tax extension on existing property to the lesser of the Consumer Price Index All Urban of December 31 of the previous tax year or 5%. Since the December 31, 2022, CPI was 6.5%, an increase of 5% over the 2022 capped extension was used to calculate the 2023 Levy. He recommended a tax levy in the amount of $45.848 million to the Board. This amount is before any tax abatements. Some reasons for this recommendation as discussed at the November 2023 finance committee meeting are:
  • Increased cost in salaries and benefits.
  • Increased cost of goods and services.
  • Not including renovations and additions, a projected $2.5M per year in maintenance project costs.
  • The district’s reliance on local revenue at 59% of total projected revenue received to fund programming and to maintain its buildings and grounds.
  • The revenues for this levy are generally received in two installments: once in spring of 2024 and again in August of 2024. Spring of 2024 is in this fiscal year. August of 2024 is in the next fiscal year.

Property Tax Relief Grant Application to Abate $1.91 million to Taxing Body Property Tax Relief Grant Application to Abate $1.91 million to Taxing Body

The Board of Education approved submitting a Fiscal Year 2024 Property Tax Relief Grant Application that allows the district to abate taxes back to the taxing body and receive funding from the state. The approval of this recommendation authorized Chief Business Offical Dr. Lawrence Cook to apply for the FY24 property tax relief grant. If granted, the District will receive an additional $1.867 million in state funding to abate $1.910 million to its taxing body. As long as the district abates $1.910 million to its taxing body for two consecutive years, it would receive $1.867 million in perpetuity in its minimum base funding. Future grant amounts are subject to the availability of state funding.
