A message from Principal Travnik

Dear Students,

As we enter the month of April, I encourage each of you to approach the remainder of the school year with a proactive and positive mindset, especially in our unique educational setting. Take this opportunity to reflect on your learning journey so far and set clear goals for the coming months. Planning ahead and staying organized will be key to your success in this unique environment. Consider creating a weekly or monthly schedule that outlines your tasks and deadlines, allowing you to stay on track and manage your time effectively. Remember, every small step you take towards your goals contributes to your overall progress and success.

It's important to recognize that seeking help when needed is not only encouraged but essential for your academic growth. Whether you're struggling with a particular concept, feeling overwhelmed by workload, or simply needing guidance on how to navigate this learning environment, don't hesitate to reach out. Our dedicated team of teachers and support staff are here to assist you every step of the way. Call, email and or set up a google meet to connect with your teachers. We run an attendance based program in jr high - as it has been shown that attendance is key to success. If you are in high school, or in the Home-Based program you too can set up times to come onto our campus, and work on site. No matter your situation, we are here to help you.

We look forward to seeing you after Spring Break on Tuesday April 2nd.

Warm regards,

Stan Travnik - Principal

Congratulations to Jonah!!

One of our AWESOME grade 9 Language Arts students, Jonah, submitted a short story to a writing contest called Polar Expressions. This contest's mission is to foster high level literacy and provide an outlet for very creative and talented Canadian youth. Jonah's story WON!!! Jonah's work will be published in the anthology titled, SYNERGY... a collection of Short Stories written by Canadian youth in grades 9-12. Well done, Jonah! We are so proud of you!!

Home Based Special Events

Our March event was Clay Mugs (part 1). Students had a wonderful time on Thursday creating their very own Animal Mug! This is a two-part event as students will learn how to build and sculpt using standard clay techniques in one session and come back to paint and glaze their mugs in the second session on April 18th at 1pm.

Kickstand

Kickstand Connect is a virtual walk-in clinic for Albertans aged 11-25 (but they said their age range is soft; kids will not be denied if they are older or younger than that). Their services are provided by Alberta-certified providers, and there is NO COST associated with them.

There is NO limit to how many times a kid can access the walk-in services; they will be directed to further support if their needs are more intensive. This program has a TON of connections to other mental health support programs in the province.

Parent Council!

PARENT COUNCIL! Fun Fact: We do NOT do any fundraising and there are no committees.

We have started a Parent Council for Black Gold Home Based and Outreach!

Meetings are kept to a ONE hour time limit and are a great opportunity for parents to learn about their child's school and have a voice. The goal of parent council this year is to build community and improve communication so that everyone has a voice at the table and our students can have the best educational experience possible.

Here is your chance to be involved in the education of your child.

Email any questions to: bgos.council@gshare.blackgold.ca

Meetings are at 6:00 pm at Beaumont Outreach!

There will be snacks!

Upcoming meeting dates:

Tuesday, Apr. 30

Tuesday, June 4

Family Oriented Programming

Please see the exciting opportunities for families who reside in Leduc County. These sessions take place on Tuesdays at Ecole Bellevue School in Beaumont. See the attached poster for more information.

LA Crude Rugby - Come try it!

As an effort to grow the wonderful sport of rugby in our broader community, we are hosting 3 free TRY RUGBY sessions in April for ages U5-U18. The U5-U11 divisions are non-contact with a focus on games and skill development. No experience is necessary for any age group.

Looking for a day out in nature? Try Elk Island National Park

Elk Island National Park is a beautiful place to give children the opportunity to explore nature. There are three trails under 4 km in length: Amisk Wuche, Lakeview and Beaver Pond. The Living Waters Boardwalk is a 400 m floating sidewalk off the shore of Astotin Lake.

In the Astotin Lake Recreation Area, children can enjoy the playground and the beach. Explore further with a free discovery kit from the Astotin Theatre. Fully prepare for each activity to have a safe, enjoyable and memorable visit. See the map of the park for locations.

Leduc Rotary Music Festival

Registration for the Leduc Rotary Music Festival opens on December 1 - please see the attached poster.

This annual music festival, which takes place April 2-18, 2024 is open to performers of all ages from the City of Leduc and Leduc County.

Registration ends on January 26, 2024, with late registration wrapping up on February 2, 2024, so there is plenty of time to consider taking part in the festival.

The Leduc Rotary Music Festival features classes from various disciplines, including piano, vocal, musical theatre, instrumental, band, choir and speech. If your school has a band or choir, the festival provides a wonderful opportunity to feature your talented students and offers a fun experience to work toward over the coming months. There are also awards and scholarships available to eligible individuals and groups.

Finally, our fees remain very competitive, with individual classes ranging from $15-$20 depending on the age of the participant and large groups (13 or more people) at $80.

Please feel free to make this information available to the teachers and parents of your school, particularly your music teachers.

If you have any questions about the festival, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly!

Warm Regards,

Alex Singleton - registrar@leducmusicfestival.ca
